I’m sure we all know some “unsung heroes”. My life here at the Port Angeles Senior Center is full of them! As “unsung heroes” implies, I do not know names. I do know when the Center

and I have been touched by one! There is a little special sparkle left following the action of an unsung hero. Maybe a special bouquet has been left for all to enjoy. Maybe something got a fresh look with a quick cleaning. Special decorations seem to magically appear. Perhaps a cupcake magically appeared on my desk! All these things happening at our Center make me smile! Each selfless act by our unsung heroes is a day brightener - not only for me - but for all here at PASC!One of our biggest supporters, who may be in the unsung hero category, is the City of Port Angeles! Yup! Did you know we are part of the Parks & Recreation Department? Is it any wonder “The FUN STARTS HERE!” It is so beneficial to know the people running our City know us and understand our value to our Citizens of the Olympic Peninsula and beyond! We are so fortunate through the years to have always had the support of our City Managers and Department heads. They know any time they need help, we are here, whether it is a room to meet in or a bus to borrow! Our warm, friendly relationship with our City Councils through the years is deeply meaningful! Whether they were acknowledging Older American’s Month, our PASC Volunteers, or our past Olympic Peninsula Senior Games, they have walked every step with us!Our own Department, Parks and Recreation, supports us in ways too numerous to list! The Parks crew keeps our place looking spiffy with beautiful plants, lawn maintenance, parking lot maintenance, and ongoing safety checks. Our Department’s maintenance crew of two, makes sure we look good on the inside & outside by keeping us painted, repaired, and comfortable! Our Department’s Janitorial crew of two, sets up our special events, keeps our rooms clean, our trash emptied, and an eye out for our building when we are not in it!Our Department’s Recreation Staff assists us by being support staff willing to help as we need it. We are all in this together. Every part makes the other parts stronger. We are stronger together. Unsung heroes…Thank you!

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEKApril 15 - 21 is National Volunteer Week!

President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week with an executive order in 1974, as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sitting U.S. president since Nixon has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week (as have many U.S. mayors and governors). Our Center celebrates over 200 volunteers who helped us in 2017. Our volunteers contributed 18,769 hours to our Center. Join us in thanking all the volunteers who help us throughout the year! We would not be the place we are without their help! We appreciate the positive impact they have on the Center, the City, the Community, and on me!

NEW MEDICARE CARDS COMING YOUR WAY!You may have heard that people with Medicare will be getting new Medicare cards this year. To cut down on fraud and identity theft, the new cards will no longer have a Social Security Number on them. Instead, they will have a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier, or MBI number. Mailing of the new cards will begin soon. Our friends at the CMS Regional Seattle office, part of the federal agency that oversees the Medicare program in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, want to make sure people know their card is coming sometime in the next few months. We have been asked to help spread the word that the new cards are coming!Right now CMS is focused on making sure that people with Medicare have their address updated with Social Security, because CMS is using their address database to send the new cards starting in April. The cards will be mailed out in waves across the country, with Alaska and Oregon in one of the early waves (spring of 2018), and Idaho and Washington in late summer of 2018. However, anyone new to Medicare or who loses their card and needs a new one after April 1, no matter where they live, will get a card with the new MBI number. Here at PASC we have a flyer of information that may be helpful to you. Stop in and pick one up!
