There are manptins r ear-endgits t the Grand
Rapids CmmunitFundatinand ne that isalwas ppular is a git appreciated stck. The CmmunitFundatin is experienced in acceptingstck gits and is happ t acilitate atranser. Gits stck can be placed in
an existing Cmmunit Fundatin undincluding the Fund r Cmmunit Gd.I the stck amunt is ver $50,000 apersnal endwment such as a dnradvised und ma be created. Rbert W.Schellenberg, CPA with Schellenberg &Evers, P.C., gave a ew pints t cnsiderwhen giving stck t the CmmunitFundatin r anther nnprft.
FOCUS ON APPRECIATED STOCK
Most importantly, a git o stock to a charity
should be considered when the stock is
highly appreciated. In todays market this has
to be careully reviewed as many people havestock that has lost value, Robert said. Giving
stock that has lost value can be done, but it
is similar to giving cash in that the donor can
take the charitable tax deduction only and
other tax advantages are lost including the
ability to deduct the loss i there is one. By
giving stock, you are essentially getting rid
o the capital gains tax, Robert said.
KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR STOCK
Making a git o publicly traded stock is
easy. It just involves a call to your broker
who will determine the value o the stock
and initiate the transer. It becomes more
complicated with stock that is not traded or
is privately-held. These types o transers
require a qualifed independent
appraisal o the stock that will satisy
the Internal Revenue Service thatyouve done homework about the
valuation, Robert said. While
donations o private stock are
less common, they do tend to
represent larger gits to
charities. Both types o stock
are treated the same by the IRS
when donated to a public charity.
THE DOUBLE BENEFIT
Charitable contributions o appreciated stock
provide two probable income-tax advantages.
The frst is a charitable deductionnormally
or the air market value o the stock at the
time o the git, subject to certain tax law
limits. The second beneft is the donor is not
taxed on the capital gain that would result
rom the sale o the stock.
CARRYING FORWARD A STOCK GIFT
Typically, a git o appreciated stock is
subject to the 30 percent AGI (adjusted gross
income) limit when gited to a 50 percent
limit organization (public charity). With other
types o gits (cash, household gits, etc.)
you cannot deduct more than 50 percent o
AGI in one year. So when making a git like
this you need to look at all your other
income, salaries, wages, interest, dividendincome and other capital gains. But you are
allowed to carry the unused deduction
orward or fve years, Robert said.
CREATING A FUND FROM STOCK
A large git o stock can be used to create
a personal endowment such as a Donor
Advised Fund. These unds are particularly
attractive because the donor has control over
where the money will go. Another advantage
is that the donor doesnt have all the
administrative costs and issues that come
with a private oundation, said Robert. He
noted that donors need to be doubly involvedwhen they create a donor advised und.
People will have a relationship with Grand
Rapids Community Foundation and with the
charities they support. It requires a bit
more involvement, he said.
HAVE FUN!
When working with my clients I tell them
not to get completely wrapped up in the
tax advantages, though they are important.
People should give because they believe
in the cause and want to be involved. I tell
my clients to have un, and that can mean
dierent things to dierent people. I
encourage them to engage in a dialogue and
to learn a lot about the work the nonproft
or the Community Foundation does in the
community, Robert said. Ive worked with
the Foundation on a number o these kinds o
gits and Ive ound them good to work with;willing and able to help me help my clients
have un being philanthropic.
THE LOGISITICS OF A TRANSFER
Most brokers can electronically transer
shares to the Community Foundation or you
and the process is quite simple. Developmen
sta can provide account numbers or you.
Mutual unds can also be transerred, but the
process can take up to eight weeks and
contact with the Community Foundation
development sta is important to acilitate
the process.I you have paper stock certifcates you wish
to git, contact Community Foundation sta
or instructions on the best way to make
that transer.
Beore you make a git o stock, especially i
the git is signifcant to you, be sure to talk
with your fnancial advisor and a member o
the Community Foundation development sta
To ensure that stock gits are received by
December 31, transers should be initiated
by December 15 i possible. n

What will it take to prepare our communitys next
generation for tomorrows workforce? This question
and how we respond matters to the Community
Foundationthe prosperity of young people will strengthen
families, neighborhoods and lift the community as a whole.
One ingredient for future success is a college degree or post-
secondary training. Grand Rapids Community Foundation is
proud of its efforts to increase access to college, particularly
among low-income and rst-generation college students. Weve
worked to increase scholarships to these students most in need.
Now the Community Foundation is taking this work a step
further, by convening and launching Kent County College Access
Network (KCCAN).
KCCAN is a consortium of local organizations committed to
enhance and connect programs that inspire low-income and
rst-generation students and their families to access, enroll and
succeed in college. This September, the Community Foundation, acting as duciary for KCCAN, received a $50,000 grant for
startup activities from Michigan College Access Network. The
KCCAN leadership team, a group of community members
invested in increasing college access, includes Ruth
Bishop, Community Foundation education
program ofcer.
The KCCAN leadership team used part
of its grant to recruit and hire Andrea
Kitomary, who began work on October 25
as the networks part-time coordinator.
Andrea most recently worked as consultant for
a school-based youth program in the Wyoming
School District, providing evaluation andassessment. Before that she was an instructor
and academic advisor at Calvin College and
Grand Valley State University.
There is a nationwide call to increase the number of people
with college degrees to 60% by 2025, and KCCAN is an
important part of the local response to that call. I am excited to
help launch this initiative in the community, Andrea said.
The leadership team has three targets for its 2011 activities:
Removenancialbarriers by increasing families
nancial awareness and helping students apply for
nancial aid.
Removeawarenessbarriers by engaging and assisting
students to complete the critical steps for college entry.
Removeaspirationalbarriers by building and supporting
students college-going aspirations.
Though we are happy to have taken a leadership role in
forming KCCAN, this project is larger than just the Community
Foundation. It has been exciting to work with community
partners to grow this grassroots effort, Ruth Bishop said. n

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
My coMMUnITy MATTeRS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
people in my eld speculate quiteoten about the uture o philanthropy.Trying to know a little somethingabout what the uture holds provides a
competitive edge and some peace o mind.
We oten ponder how up-and-coming donors
will behave. Will todays young people be as
generous as past generations have been?
Will the next generations o donors be as
attached to place as our current donors are?
We wonder about young people who leave
Grand Rapids or college or jobs. Will thisplace bring them back at some point
or are they gone or good?
Research has been done about many o
these questions and behaviors and Grand
Rapids Community Foundation is working
to apply this knowledge to our work and
community. An ongoing study about why
people love where they live, Soul of the
Community, captured our attention. The
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
commissioned the Gallup Poll to do this study.
w ppl , t st
While people may move to a community or
work, what keeps them there isnt completely
the workplace. The Community Foundations
vision talks about being a magnetic and
interconnected West Michigan community.
We selected the word magnetic because,
like a magnet, we want to attract and keep
people here. The Knight/Gallup study has
identied the top three traits that emotionally
connect people to a community:
Social oerings and un gathering spots
that appeal to a wide range o ages,
marital statuses and incomes
Aesthetics or physical beauty o urban
design and green space
Openness to new and dierent people
To a lesser degree, the economy and quality
o public education also infuence peoples
sense o attachment to place.
nxt Grt Drs d attct t CtAnd heres another proound nding
rom two years o research. Theres a
signicant correlation between peoples
emotional connection to a community and
local economic growth. That is, those
communities with higher levels o attachment
also have higher levels o gross domestic
product growth. The studys nal year
will analyze which comes rst, emotional
connection or economic growth.
These ndings present a great opportunity
or Grand Rapids Community Foundation andvalidate what weve been doing or years.
Some people think that unding the arts,
cultural competence, social enrichment and
the environment is nice, but not essential.
This study proves that creating a place o
inclusiveness, un and physical beauty is
more than nice. Its vital to our present and
uture prosperity.
S, ds ts lt t
ft ds?
Weve known and understood rom
relationships with many donors that a desire
to give to the community comes rom two
things. First, people want to give back
because a community has helped them
prosper, usually in a business or proession.
Second, people who give to us always
express a deep connection to the Grand
Rapids area.
I we continue to create a place that people
love to live in, then uture donors, like our
present donors, will want to give back. This
multigenerational shared desire will continue
to sustain and grow this place we care so
much about. n
