Southern Rivers Energy (SRE) and the Southern Riv-ers Energy Trust Inc. recently awarded a total of $14,929.14 to local teachers to fund innovative lesson plans for students.

Members of the Bright Ideas Brigade from Southern Rivers Energy surprised the winning teachers in their classrooms with flowers, big checks and gift bags. Grants of up to $1,000 are awarded to teachers for their creative classroom projects. The pro-gram is designed to challenge teachers to develop innova-tive lesson plans that engage students, involve teamwork and re-energize their love of learning. Grants are not awarded for professional development.

This past fall, 19 winning teachers and their team members received Bright Ideas grants at 13 schools in Crawford, Lamar, Monroe, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties.

Kathryn Claxton, Southern Rivers Energy’s Communi-cations Specialist, says, “Just

like our college scholarships and Washington Youth Tour, Bright Ideas is a major part of Southern Rivers Energy’s commitment to education. The Southern Rivers Energy Trust Inc. is pleased to sup-port innovative and creative lesson plans that benefit stu-dents in the communities we serve. These grants are just a small token of our appreci-ation to these hard-working professionals.”

Grants are awarded to certi-fied schoolteachers of grades Pre-K through 12 (public or private) in Bibb, Coweta, Crawford, Lamar, Meriweth-er, Monroe, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties. Applica-tions can be found on SRE’s website in May and must be completed before the begin-ning of September. Grant winners will be notified when the Bright Ideas Brigade makes its rounds each Octo-ber. For more information or to apply online, visit southernriversenergy.com.

80YEARS

ANNIVERSARY

80TH YEAR CELEBRATION • 1938-2018

1950S

SOUTHERN RIVERS ENERGY

By the 1950s, Lamar Electric Mem-bership Corp., later Southern Riv-ers Energy, had extended into Bibb, Crawford, Meriwether and Spalding counties and opened a new office. As progress continued, members began to use electricity in increasing quantities. By 1953, Lamar EMC had doubled in size, serving almost 1,000 miles of line and nearly 3,300 members.

In 1958, in celebration of 20 years of service, Lamar EMC hosted its own beauty contest featuring 28 girls at its 20th Annual Meeting on Aug. 11, 1958. Winner Lizzie Marshall of Lizella went on to represent Lamar EMC as one of the 11 ladies competing for the title of Miss Georgia Rural Electrifica-tion in 1959.
