Rowayton Civic Association’s Junior RCA You may have noticed a growing number of local high school students helping as volunteers at RCA events. This is largely because of the Junior RCA program, which was instituted in 2016. The Jr. RCA is a partner organization formed to support the activities of the RCA and to encourage civic engagement among local high school students. Jr. RCA members are involved in the planning and execution of most RCA-sponsored events during the year and they are also expected to plan at least one self-directed civic project each program year. Members have been a big part of successful RCA-sponsored events so far, this year including the Memorial Day Parade, the RCA Fun Run, and the River Ramble. These events turn out to be a great way for the students to spend time together, have new experiences, and spend time working alongside other active members of our community!

Students members are eligible to join the Junior RCA during the spring of their soph- omore or junior years of high school. New members will be accepted in February 2018. Interested students should reach out for more information and contact Rob Strickland at [email protected]. Join the Junior RCA – it looks great on your college applications!

Slow Down in Town!Rowayton is a quaint neighborhood with winding roads and a beautiful landscape. We pride ourselves on our town, our fam- ilies, our friends and our community. We continue to support our SLOW DOWN IN TOWN initiative, especially now when school is back in session. You will see reminders through town with yard signs and banners.

Please allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, whether that’s to town, to the train station or to one of our RCA events and please SLOW DOWN IN TOWN! The Rowayton Civic Association thanks you!

Summer RCA Highlights

Rowayton Trash Bash Cleaned Up! The RCA and Rowayton Historical Society team- ed up again to make the 2018 Trash Bash a tremendous success, with many Rowaytonites pitching in to help keep our town beautiful – and they learned a bit about the Skip the Plastic Norwalk movement which is taking hold across town. On April 21, Rowaytonites came out in full force once again to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up our beautiful

town in the annual Trash Bash. Kids and adults alike spread out all over town to collect trash using our biodegrad- able trash bags and gloves! Thank you to everyone who came out and got a little dirt on their hands!!

Comedy Night Delivers a Weekend of Laughter, Once AgainThe RCA’s Comedy Night fundraiser was another weekend to remember, as both Friday and Saturday nights’ sold out shows were a resounding success. Rowayton residents and neighbors packed their picnics to enjoy an evening

under the tent at the Community Center for laughter and dancing. Each night’s guest experienced a night of original wit and humor thanks to a total of eight pro- fessional stand-up comedians from the New York and Boston areas. After the show, the dance floor opened to tunes selected by one of New York City’s elite DJs.

We would like to thank the many volunteers for their help and the support of each guest that attended. Comedy Night is the RCA’s most popular event and the

proceeds help the RCA fulfill its mission to enrich the lives of its residents by providing cultural programs, educational scholarships and supporting com- munity initiatives. Mark your calendars for next year’s show on May 17 and 18.

The Memorial Day Parade Marched OnOur town came out to celebrate at the annual Memorial Day Parade. Everyone picked their favorite spot along Rowayton Avenue or McKinley Street and cheered for our veterans, Brien McMahon and Roton School marching bands, our com- missioners, volunteer firefighters, Little Leaguers, Scouts and all the many other enthusiastic march- ers (even four-footed ones!).

After the parade, we all gathered at Veterans’ Can- non to honor those who died in their service to our country. And then most strolled on over to the Fire House for hot dogs and soda,

hosted by our local firefighters and their families and then on to the Rowayton Art Center’s Annual Art Show and over to enjoy some of the famous homemade strawberry shortcake, made by Rowayton Methodist parishioners. This event is truly New England and Rowayton at its finest. It’s always the perfect kick-off to summer!

39th Annual RCA Father’s Day Fun RunWhat a great day to be a Father (or anyone else) in Rowayton for the 39th ann- ual RCA Father’s Day Fun Run held on Sunday, June 17. This year’s event was dedicated to Mikey Schneider, a local elementary school student

who is fighting an aggressive form of pediatric cancer. The RCA wanted this year’s Fun Run to be a big, bright show of support for Mikey and his family, and Rowayton delivered!! It was the best attended Fun Run in years, with several hundred people coming out to put on some pink (Mikey’s favorite color) and celebrate what it means to be part of such a tight knit community!

The race was a good one as always. Runners of all ages ran 2.2 or 4.4 miles, including at least one trip up the infamous Bluff Avenue hill. The RCA would like to congratulate all finishers and thank those who came out to be part of this great event. A link to all finish-ers’ places and times can be found on the RCA website.

Cinema on the Sound was a success under the stars! Thanks to the support of our amazing community, Cinema on the Sound enjoyed another successful season. The RCA and Rowayton Library were pleased to showcase three wonderful movies, the Darkest

Hour, The Greatest Showman and Coco. Mother Nature did her best to make things difficult for us, but we managed to make these star-filled nights come to- gether. We want to thank our wonderful town again for their continued support and we look forward to bringing you new movies and hot popcorn next summer.

RCA Fun Run

All Fired Up at the Rowayton Civic Association’s July 4 Fireworks Yet another great Rowayton 4th of July cele-bration with Atlas Pyrovision putting on a truly stunning show. It was a perfect day at Bayley Beach, with beautiful weather and local bands Baby Dynamite and The Spadtastics offering 4 hours of live music! After the last chords of a Grateful Dead inspired set, the crowded

beach was treated to a rousing rendition of the star Spangled banner from Alexander Markov’s electric violin, which was a perfect transition to the spec- tacular 30-minute show from the Atlas barge! It was truly Rowayton at its best. Rowayton’s fireworks are in a large part funded by monetary and truly generous contri- butions from local organizations. The show could not happen without the following organizations’ annual support: Roton Point Association, Wee Burn Country Club, The Tokeneke Club, Roway- ton Beach Association, Bell Island Improvement Association, Pine Point Association, the Roway- ton Yacht Club, and Norwalk’s 6th Taxing District.

The RCA would also like to thank the follow- ing people and organizations for their help in making the 2018 fireworks a success: Ed Carlson, Rowayton Fire Marshall; Rowayton Fire Chief Todd DeKlyn; the Rowayton Volunteer Fire Department; the RCA Summer Music team; the Norwalk Police Department; Norwalk Hospital EMTs; the Noroton Marine Fire Department, and key personnel at Bayley Beach including Don Wilson, and Sue and Melissa Bucciarelli.

Rowayton’s River Ramble on July 14th!On July 14th Pinkney Park, situated along the Five Mile River, was filled with joy and laughter during the 48th Annual River Ramble. We celebrated the true spirit of Rowayton with great food, fantastic music, and good old fashioned fun! A main highlight of this year’s River Ramble was the incredible energy at the live auction.

Throughout the day, children enjoyed winning prizes, getting their faces painted, visit- ing the petting zoo, eating ice cream and jumping in the spectacular bounce houses. As always, the dunk tank line was full!! Local merchants and artisans shared their hand-made and artistic impressions for all to enjoy!

We would like to thank our friends, neighbors and merchants who donated their time, energy and enthusiasm. The day was an overwhelming success due to the help of over one hundred volunteers of all ages. We are very appreciative of the support of this year’s River Ramble sponsors, Maureen Bloom Play- dates, United Church Nursery School, Five Mile River Nursery School, Community Cooperative Nursery School, Laurel Road

Bank, Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society and New York Life. Our gratitude goes out to everyone who pitched in – we couldn’t have pulled it off without you. We would like to note some of our special Rowaytonites who truly made the day a memorable one:

• Andy Meyerson, our Auctioneer, who captured everyone’s attention and kept the bidding going for all 11 live auction items! Thanks for also making your incredible pulled pork and chili again this year and for finding a great band to play at the event! Thank you for your continued support of the River Ramble.

• Brendan McGee for providing our sound system for the auction and music.

• Mark Sattler and his Grill Masters, Matt Manley, Ben Bresnahan and Tom Luthy, who provided fantastic food for the festivities!

• Kurt Drstvensek and his Food Tent team, Jamie Karper, Nelson Jantzen, Brad Halsey, Mat Bisher, Dan Ricciardi, Ryan Still, Corinne Still, Rich Van Steen, and Dustin Davis, who coordinated all the food and fed everyone throughout the day!

• Bucky and Frani Taylor, for manning the Raw Bar and the entire ‘shucker’ team — Jay Sequeria, Bill Lindeblad, Kerry Mcfarland, Ted Mcfarland, Frank Schlater, Pi Taylor, Marty Roth, Skip Dunphy and Luz Ayala. And special thanks to Rowayton Seafood Mar- ket for donating oysters and Atlantic Clam Farms for donating clams!

• “The Beer Boys” – Thanks to Paul Curtin, Chris Sovak and team – Howard Courtemanche, Doug Ambrose, Andy Meyerson, Don Nash, Martin Yallop and Ian King – for pulling together a great selection of beers and ensuring a good time was had by all. Also, special thanks to Rowayton Wines and Half Full Brewery for their donations.

• Big thanks to Todd Deklyn and the Rowayton Fire Department and Ed Carlson.

• John Griffin and Jordan Saxe for running the most successful 50/50 yet!

• Michelle Noe for all of her hard work and dedication for the kid’s games.

• Chris Wais for all of her efforts leading up to and on the day of the River Ramble.

• Special thanks to the RCA River Ramble team - Allyson Griffin, Meg Schwanhausser, Christine Smith, Lynn Worland, Garth Griffiths and Heather Drstvensek for all the time and effort they put in to make the event a day to remember for the entire community.

In addition to being one of our most fun-filled events, the River Ramble is one of the RCA’s largest fundraisers and finances many of our community events including the Fireworks, Summer Concerts, Soccer Program, Swim Races and the Halloween Celebration, to name a few. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

The 2018 River Ramble wouldn’t have been a success without the support of our extended community. A HUGE thank you to the following who helped make this year’s event one of the most successful on record!

Special thanks to all our very generous Auction donors…

The 2018 RCA Summer Music Festival Summer Sundays in Rowayton have become a trad- ition like few others. After a weekend filled with family activities, Rowayton turns into the hottest concert venue in New England, offering a combination of local talent, rising stars, and established national acts. There is nothing better than grabbing a cooler, hanging with friends and listening to great music.

June & July shows were at Bayley Beach with Pete Francis, Passafire, the Spadtastics, Ripe, Midnight North and a

Roton Middle School show with The Samples. In August we moved the stage over to Pinkney Park to hear Commonheart, Mihali, Keller Williams and ending the park shows with the unbelievable spectacle of Railroad Earth. Then we closed out the summer with a Labor Day reggae fest that featured The Alchemystics. Without the generous support of local businesses and residents, we would never be able to bring this caliber of talent to town.

The Rowayton Summer Music Festival is one of the best kept secrets in the area, and it would not happen without tireless efforts of the RCA Summer Music Committee. Many thanks to Chris Gorman, Peter Stuart, Paul Curtin, Matt Manley, Drew Seath, Ben Bresnahan, Rob Munro, Chris Sovak, Andy Meyerson and Brendan McGee. This crew begins planning for hot summer nights in the cold, blustery days of January – scouting, inquiring and booking the bands as well as hitting the street in search of sponsorships. When it’s finally show time, this crew spends Sundays setting up behind the scenes and then breaking it all down when everyone goes home. It’s a lot of work, but it’s their passion.

Thank you to everyone for coming to the shows. The turnout was tremendous and there is a palpable, welcoming vibe the artists feel when they come to town. We all had a blast. Just another piece of what makes our town a little slice of heaven...Let’s do it again next Summer!

We would like to thank all of those who made the festival possible this year. A very special thanks to the Griffin and Thomson Families for their generous sponsorship that made our penultimate show of the season, featuring the Alpaca Gnomes and headliner Railroad Earth, possible.

Please join us in showing them our appreciation for their contributions by supporting their businesses. You can link to their websites by going to the RCA website.

We want to give a big shout out to all the Rowaytonites and nearby neighbors who became Festival Fans with generous (and tax deductible) donations. Too many to recog-nize all, but we would like to mention few by name:

Rowayton Sports

Rowayton Civic Association’s Rowayton Youth SoccerThe 2018 Rowayton Soccer season is underway with well over 300 players improving their skills and enjoying friendly competition. Rowayton Youth Soccer is a rec-reational community soccer program run by volunteers for children from 4-18 years old and is running for 10 weeks from September 9 through mid-November this year. We have five age groups: 4-5 year olds; 6-7 year olds; 8-10 year olds; middle schoolers, and a high school team. While games are certainly competitive, recreation is our priority. Play occurs locally in Rowayton (except for middle and high schoolers). The Saturday morning games have become a local tradition of good spirited competition, bringing both the players and parents together as a community. The RCA has made a significant investment toward our goal of continuing to improve our kid’s soccer development by contracting with a professional soccer training organization for weekday practices. As a volunteer-based organization, we are al- ways looking for parents willing to coach or act as team comunication coordinators. For more information, please contact Rick Klein ([email protected]) or Mark Sattler ([email protected]).

The RCA UndergroundFriday Nights, October 2018–June 2019

Just for Middle Schoolers - The Rowayton Underground Youth Center is an RCA sponsored program held in the lower level of the Rowayton Community Center (newly renovated!). Held from October 2018 through June 2019, the Underground provides a safe and supervised venue where our middle school kids (6/7/8 graders) can socialize with friends one Friday night a month, with adult chaperones.

At Underground, kids can enjoy air hockey, foosball, ping pong and other games. Weather permitting there are outdoor activities such as basketball, laser tag and touch football. Underground also offers a few planned local “field trips” off site and a year-end Bayley Beach picnic in June.

Sixth graders will meet on one Friday night a month, and 7th/8th graders will meet together one Friday night a month, from 6:00-8:00pm. While this program is primarily for Sixth Taxing District residents, school friends residing outside of Rowayton are welcome to join in but must be sponsored by a resident. Each resident may sponsor one child.

A one-time registration fee of $150.00 pays for staff and pizza dinner and snacks each night. Registration Form can be found on the RCA website. Completed Registration Form and check for $150.00 (payable to the Rowayton Civics Association) will be collected on Opening Night. Underground Opening Night takes place in early October (exact dates will be communicated).

Norwalk Land Trust Brings Back the Birds of Prey Saturday, September 22, 11:00am-2:00pm The fabulous “Birds of Prey” exhibition which features swooping hawks and owls and other raptors returns to an- other Norwalk Land Trust property on Saturday, Sept. 22. Seen by hundreds at Farm Creek at October 2016’s Discov- ery Day, this year’s show will be at the White Barn Preserve,

440 Newtown Rd, in Norwalk, from 11:00am-2:00pm. The lecture and demonstration will be conducted by Naturalist Brian Bradley from 12:00-1:00pm. It’s an incredible experience! Other activities will hold children’s attention; and parents and friends can learn about the Land Trust’s plan to acquire this 15-acre parcel of land. It will be worth the trip! For more information, visit our web site: www.norwalklandtrust.org.

The Rowayton Fire Department Needs YOU!Have you ever considered joining our all-volunteer fire depart- ment? Not only does the Rowayton Fire Department always welcome additional firefighters, but you can always help as a driver, radio operator or in other functions. Rowayton’s all-volunteer department keeps our property taxes about 10% lower than they would be if we had a paid department. Training is on- going, so you can join at any time of the year. The fire department is always looking for new recruits. Call Chief DeKlyn at 203-853-9411 for more information.

A note from Fire Marshal Ed Carlson1. Check to see if your heating system has been serviced within the last 12 months.2. Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every 12 months or sooner depending on how much they are used.3. Be sure not to leave candles unattended during a power outage. They are a leading cause of fire in a home.4. If you have a fireplace, does it have a screen or door to catch sparks?5. Space heaters need to be at least three feet away from walls and combustible items.6. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries, spring and fall.7. Practice your fire escape plan with your family. If you do not have a plan, it’s a good time to start one.8. Install smoke detectors on every level and in every sleeping area.9. It is recommended that you have a CO detector on the main and sleeping level (s) of your home.

For the past two years I have attended Operation Save a Life that provides smoke and CO detectors for residents that need detectors for their homes. These are battery operated replacement devices. If you currently have battery detectors that you think need replac-ing, please contact me at 203-854-6666 ext. 2. My goal as Fire Marshal is to ensure that all residents have working detectors in their homes.
