Preparing K-12 Students to Be College and Career Ready

Students today face a rapidly changing digital world. The opportunities that students have to access and consume information are vast and require a set of information and digital literacy skills to locate, access, evaluate and synthesize information to be on track for college and careers.

School Library Media Specialists (SLMS), who are information specialists, are best poised to co-teach students in how to meet today’s challenges.

Preparing K-12 Students to Be College and Career Ready

We respectfully request that School Library Media Specialists be included when developing resources for implementation of Common Core and other Learning Standards.

We recommend, as a first step, establishing regularly scheduled meetings of NYSED staff with representatives from the school library community.

Outcome:

To increase student achievement by strengthening the roles and resources of the School Library Media Specialist in preparing students for college and careers.

Students as Critical Thinkers, Problem Solvers and

Communicators

Through the Common Core and other State Standards, students are required to critically think, effectively solve problems and communicate informed ideas.

The School Library Media Specialist teaches students essential skills to read closely, make evidence-based claims, research to deepen understanding, and build evidence-based arguments.

We respectfully request that the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (IFC), be considered for inclusion as a part of NYSED teaching and learning resources that contribute to the successful implementation of State standards.

We recommend that representatives from the school library community work with NYSED representatives to prepare for the Regents adoption and promotion of the IFC through EngageNY.

Outcome:

To increase student achievement by the Regents adoption and promotion of the Information Fluency Curriculum Framework to better prepare students as critical thinkers, problem solvers and effective communicators.

Student Success in Civic and Global Literacies…

Students will be required to master competencies as found in the newly adopted NYSED Social Studies Framework that includes the Common Core ELA reading and writing anchor standards.

The School Library Media Specialist has expertise in teaching research practices such as gathering, using, evaluating and interpreting information essential to the implementation of the Social Studies Framework.

Student Success in Civic and Global Literacies…

We respectfully request that all future review teams and resource guide creation groups embed information fluency skills into curriculum and resource materials.

We recommend that representatives from the school library community be appointed to the writing and review teams for the NY State social studies framework resource guide and future framework guides in other content areas.

Outcome:

To increase student achievement and motivation in the integration of information literacy skills by recognizing the School Library Media Specialist as essential to the teaching of multiple literacies.
