Dear Parents, Children and Friends, WAKAKIRRI Our talented group of students left for Perth this morning and perform the story of the life of Paddy Hannan on Thursday evening. They have spent many hours rehearsing under the guidance of Miss Ashleigh Britt and Miss Kelly Eastman, and are very excited to share a very ‘Goldfields’ story with the audience in Perth. I must commend all who have been involved in bringing this project to fruition; from the staff members and parents who spent countless hours on the props and cos- tumes, the many people who fundraised such an incredible amount to make this possible and especially the staff members and parent helpers who have given up their time to make the journey to Perth. I hope everyone enjoys the experience, and I feel sure that the performers will do St Joseph’s proud! ST JOSEPH’S PRINCIPAL 2018 Mr Dan Wood, School Improvement Advisor with Catholic Education WA will be visiting St Joseph’s on behalf of the Director of Schools, Dr Tony Curry, on Monday August 21st for a series of meetings to discuss the process for the appointment of a principal for next year. Dan will meet with staff members at 3.30pm, P&F and interested parents at 4.00pm and the School Board at 5.00pm. All meetings will be held in the Library. PRINCIPALS’ CONFERENCE I was privileged to be able to attend a high quality conference last week. Over 90 Catholic primary principals gathered and took part in presentations by the Catholic Archbishop of Perth - Timothy Costelloe, World Vision Chief – Tim Costello, and world renowned educational speakers – Yong Zhao and Simon Breakspear. All speakers challenged participants to consider more deeply those in need within our school communities, both socially and educationally. They did this in the knowledge that our children are growing in an ever changing world, where technology is expanding at a breath-taking rate. They all agreed that it is probable that some of the jobs our children will be doing in their working life have not even been invented yet! CONFIRMATION I wish our eleven candidates well as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at the 5.30pm mass on Sunday August 20 in All Hallows Church. I also sincerely thank Miss Rebecca Miles and Mr Luke Shaw for their work in preparing the children. WELCOME Over the past two weeks we have welcomed two new Kindergarten students to St Josephs. I warmly welcome Clifford D’Cruze and Vincent Grubisa, along with their families, to our school. MOVIE NIGHT Congratulations to our P&F on the success of the movie night last Friday. There was a great turn up of children to take advantage of the movie and pizza experience, and all seemed to enjoy the evening. PROJECT COMPASSION Caritas Australia would like to thank all at St Joseph’s for your generous support of Project Compassion 2017. The total donation by the school was $522.36. Your generosity has made it possible for Caritas Australia to empower individuals and communities through education and training, and transform their future. SWIMMING LESSONS Swimming lessons commence for all Pre Primary to Year Six students next Monday August 14th. All students are asked to wear their bathers under their sports uniform to school and bring a bag with their towel and underwear to change into at the conclusion of the lesson. May God bless our school and those within it. LEARNING INTENTIONS – WHAT ARE WE

LEARNING?

Learning intentions are student friendly statements

about learning, based on a specific curriculum focus.

They assist teachers in thinking deeply about learning

and how to transfer this thinking into language which

can be communicated to students. Learning intentions

must provide clear, specific and attainable goals in

order for students to understand and value them.

They eliminate the notion of secret business. The

teacher is not the holder of all the curriculum

knowledge with students left guessing what they are

learning or the purpose for learning. Learning

intentions enable both teacher and students to be

clear about what learning will occur from the

beginning. This process of communication begins in

Kindy and carries on through all year levels.

Learning intentions focus on knowledge, skills or

understanding. At St Joseph’s, every classroom has a

poster that states “We are learning to…” and the

learning intention for each lesson. This is just another

simple way we opening up the learning process for

our students.

SUCCESS CRITERIA – HOW DO WE KNOW

THAT OUR LEARNING HAS BEEN

SUCCESSFUL?

The learning intention of a lesson or series of lessons

tells students what they should know, understand and

be able to do, and the success criteria help teachers

to decide whether their students have in fact achieved

the learning intention. Importantly, the success criteria

also answer the same question from the point of view

of the student: How will I know whether I've achieved

the learning intention?

Sometimes the success criteria might be just a

series of dot points. For lengthy assessment tasks,

however, teachers may use rubrics. Success Criteria

deconstruct the learning requirements and provide

students with a clear understanding of what it is that

they need to do in order to achieve the learning goal.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Yesterday all Year Six students attended a Confirmation

Retreat at All Hallows Church. The day provided a

wonderful opportunity for students to stop and reflect

on the importance of this Sacrament, outside of the

school setting. Students engaged in a range of activities

throughout the day and I was pleased with their

maturity, enthusiasm and contributions to discussions. I

would like to thank Miss Miles and Fr Matthew for their

assistance in organising and leading the day.

Next week, 11 Year Six students will be receiving the

gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit in their fullness at the

Sacrament of Confirmation. This will take place at All

Hallows Church on Sunday 20 August, within the

5:30pm mass. Bishop Sproxton will be confirming our

candidates this year and we are excited to welcome him

into our school community. It would be wonderful to

see many members of our community at this Mass, in

support of our Year Six Confirmation Candidates.

I congratulate the following students, in advance, on

taking this next important step in their faith journey:

Flynn Baroni, Caitlyn Cappello, Grace Carter, Riley

Cook, William Johnston, Natalie Malicky, Aaron

Marwick, Jessica May, Geb O’Halloran, Kate Priestley

and Ashlee Winner.

Mr Luke Shaw

Assistant Principal

I've chosen these simple words from Mother Teresa

to reflect upon, because it reminds me of the

importance of living by what you know is right,

regardless of others expectations and standards. May

you end every day surrounded by people who love

and support you, fulfilled with your achievements and

contributions of the day, knowing that you are enough

and where you are meant to be. In this, may you find

happiness in your life.

Mrs Megan Murphy

Librarian/Reading Recovery Assistant

Our next meeting is Monday 14th August at 2pm.

Come along for a cuppa and a chat.

St Joseph’s School will once again participate in the

yearly Woolworths Earn and Learn program. Why not

collect your stickers at your next Woolworths grocery

shop and help our school receive some amazing

resources! You can drop your stickers (either loose or

already attached to the Woolworths brochure) in either

the St Joseph’s Drop Box at the front of our local store

or at the school office.

Thank you in anticipation!
