16 years teaching experience

Thirteenth year at St. John School

Two boys- Mason (4th grade) and Rowan (1st grade)

How is 5th Grade Different than 4th ?

Huge emphasis on writing- Five paragraph essays, typing two pages in one sitting (Common Core Standards)

Social Studies and Science Integration-(lots of non-fiction reading)

Cooperative Learning- working well in small groups

Math Skill Focus- decimals and fractions

Mastery Multiplication Facts (a must!) Building Study and Work Skills for Middle School

Teaching note-taking, mapping, study habits, , etc.

Integration of Technology into Learning- iPads and Laptops

Our Ultimate Goal Help each child be Accountable, Independent, and Love

Writing Across the Curriculum Voyages in English – Writing and Grammar Text 6 Traits of Effective Writing: Ideas, Organization,

Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions

Writing Process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Proofreading, Publishing

Spelling: Weekly online homework with pretest on Monday and test on Friday; Leveled- determine which level on Mondays.

Assessments: Rubric Based (scale), Quizzes, and Projects

What can you do today to help your child be successful IN 5th GRADE?

1.Help your child get to school on time each morning. Don’t make tardies a habit!

2. Read and discuss each assignment in his/her planner before signing.

3.Check over your child’s graded work every Monday.

4. Check the Parent Portal on a weekly basis.

5. Allow extra time for use of technology- xtramath.org, mathletics.com, AR quizzes, spellingcity.com, TTL4 or other typing program

5. Sign your child’s tests and quizzes.

6. When in doubt- always email me!
