A Little Info About Mr. Jastrow

• Moved to Naperville in 8th grade and attended Gregory Middle School.

• At NVHS participated in many music activities and played baseball for 2 years.

• College- University of Iowa• Hired in 2007 at Builta Elementary• 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade

• Masters at Concordia University 2012• 4th Grade was the “Ideal Grade”

English Language Arts (ELA)4th Grade

ELA

• ELA is the integration of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language.

• Indian Prairie’s ELA Curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The goal is to prepare students for success beyond the classroom using a variety of texts.

OverviewThe 4th Grade ELA Curriculum consists of one thematic unit per

quarter. Each unit:• Focuses on academic and thematic essential questions and skills

• Pairs literary text with informational text • Incorporates multiple modes of writing and literary

genres• Integrates grammar, vocabulary, and word study • Reinforces the importance of research skills in a

variety of settings• Examines the effective use of technology for

learning and communicating• Assesses student mastery of essential skills through

carefully designed Performance Tasks• Allows for the integration of social studies, science,

and math

Word Study• Weekly tests• Words handed out Wednesday- First lesson Thursday• Tests always on Wednesdays• Homework assigned and due by Wednesday• Contract-•Sentences – 15 of the words•Choice – Other 15 words not used on sentences•Homographs and Homophones should be done

on each piece of homework

While each of the Units of Study focuses on particular content, the demands

placed on students continues to build.

Assessment• Mastery of essential skills and conceptual

understandings is what is most important. These will be assessed through end-of-unit Performance Tasks.

• Daily work, group collaboration, reading responses, written work, book discussions, tests, and quizzes are considered when assessing student progress toward mastery.

Mathematics 4th Grade

Math• Based on Common Core Standards• Dig deeper into learning instead of wider

• Still using Everyday Math but lots of resources are used• Study Links• Not all will be used• Homework is all copied and sent home this year• EM Online will be used throughout year

• SRB• Huge tool in 4th grade• Students expected to use this on a daily basis• Able to bring home

• BYOT is part of District 204’s mission to help students develop 21st century skills by enhancing engagement through the use of instructional technology

• Not Required-but will be used most days.• District provides alternatives – students wait their turn• I collect devices in the morning – any left at school I lock up at

night• Recommend cases or covers• Students who bring device in during the entire week have the

option to use at Friday Free Time

Behavior Managemeent

• Teach expected behaviors• Badger Keys

• Review when necessary• Expectations will be stated before the start of each task.• If Needed• Student given silent reminder • Restate Expectations• Fill out student form with Mr. Jastrow• Talk with parents

• Students earn Power Paw Tickets• Class celebration after bucket filled• Usually free time or extra recess

• Weekly stars recognized• Earn “Jastrow Money” towards a variety of prizes
