1 Curriculum Register March 21, 2016 This publication contains proposed curriculum changes. This Curriculum Register conforms to the curriculum review process as described in the fall 2007 Curriculum Review Guide. It contains two sections, Campuswide Proposal Sharing, which includes a synopsis of course and program proposals that have been submitted for review to their department curriculum committee or program faculty and University Curriculum Committee (UCC) Recommendations that includes completed information on proposals reviewed by UCC. Course: PHI 380 Type of Change: New Course Proposer: Sheela Pawar Summary of Changes: The Philosophy Department proposes a new course, “Religion, Fundamentalism, and Violence.” This course is a critical analysis of the role played by religion, secularization and fundamentalization in various acts and cultures of violence throughout the world. The goal is to understand and compare fundamentalist movements in various religious traditions and to explore the relationship between the nature of religion; the nature and processes of secularization; and the nature and processes of religious fundamentalism; as well as the consequences of religious fundamentalization for individuals and societies. We will also explore whether fundamentalist principles legitimate new forms of religious violence. The course will be used as an elective in the BA in Philosophy: Religious Studies Option.

To reflect the current trend of operations management, the modifications of course title and course description are proposed for OMG 427. In the modified course, basic elements of Business Process Improvement are presented. Process Improvement related to wide areas of business activities are discussed. This includes not only the process improvement of manufactured products but also various kinds of service activities such as quality management of finance, accounting and marketing departments of manufacturing companies as well as hospitals, airlines, trucking companies, governments, schools, accounting and law firms.   Course: OMG 428 Type of Change: Course Modification Proposer: Edward Chu Summary of Changes: Proposing the change of course title from "Purchasing and Procurement" to "Purchasing Management" To reflect the current trend of operations management, the modification of course title is proposed for OMG 428. The current course title is "Purchasing and Procurement” and proposed to be "Purchasing Management”. Course: OMG 430 Type of Change: Course Modification Proposer: Fisher Ke Summary of Changes: Proposing the changes of OMG 430 Supply Chain Management including course title, course description, prerequisite courses, mode of instruction, and course fee. To reflect the current trend of supply chain management, the modifications of course title, course description, prerequisite courses, mode of instruction, and course fee are proposed for OMG 430. In the modified course, this course introduces key concepts of supply chain management (SCM) and real-world SCM cases, helping students interpret the happenings in the world from a supply chain’s perspective. This course will provide students with hands-on experience with the SAP ERP solution in use by major corporations to manage and improve the efficiency of their supply chains. This course will include 1 laboratory hour and 2 lecture hours per week and course fee will be collected for using SAP ERPSim and electronic beer game. About the prerequisites, OMG 322 is required and OMG 230 is recommended for this course. Program: Minor in Data Analytics

As a result, there is a fast and sustainable growing need for well-trained data analysts who also possess in-depth knowledge of a specific functional area. Minor in Data Analytics (12 – 18 units) The Minor in Data Analytics offers students an opportunity to acquire an in-depth understanding of methods and applications of data analytics. It thus provides an excellent complement and/or improvement to the functional knowledge obtained through other programs. Program: CIS 380 Type of Change: New Course Proposer: Myron Sheu Summary of Changes: The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management proposes the following: CIS 380 - Introduction to Programming for Data Analysis and Visualization Course Description: The proficiency with Microsoft Excel is no longer sufficient for analyzing very large data sets required by many professional jobs. This course introduces students to basic programming skills that would enable them to be productive down the road, using one or more programming languages which are widely applicable to data analysis and visualization. Supply Chain Management Type of Change: Program Modification Proposer: Fisher Ke Summary of Changes: The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management proposes the following: The current concentration is too much dependent on the community colleges, assuming they provide all the lower division concentration courses. However, they have not offered these courses as we expected. Therefore, we propose to revise the program and consolidate the courses to offer most of them through our department. After benchmarking similar programs and analyzing the demand of job market, we propose to eliminate the two tracks and to change required and elective courses based on the new trends in the discipline and the needs of the market. In the proposed program, we change the name of concentration to “Operations & Supply Chain Management (OSCM) Concentration.” All OSCM-concentration students need to complete six required courses or 18 credit units including a 2-level introduction to Supply Chain Management (SCM) course and five 4-level OMG courses, which cover three elements of SCM- Sourcing (S), Converting (C), and Moving (M). In addition to the required courses, OSCM-concentration students need to take two elective courses related to Information Systems and/or internship in SCM. Proposed Concentration:

Currently, students are required to take GED 500 Research Methods in Education, 501 Seminar in Learning and Development and 503 Socio Cultural Issues in Education. We are requesting to drop the GED 503 Socio Cultural Issues in Education course for the following reasons:

The CTC (California Commission on Teaching Credentialing) rolled out new standards for School Leaders Fall 2015. These standards have embedded equity throughout and this coupled with an improved diversity standard insure our students have comprehensive development in this area. Our courses have been revised to include additional information in the new standards.

We already have a three unit course SLP 554 that is steeped in socio-cultural issues

In addition, our program has more units than required for a Master's so this will have no impact on the program.

Program/Course: SLP 560/561 Type of Change: Course Modification Proposer: Antonia Issa Lahera Summary of Proposed Changes: The School Leadership Program is proposing to modify the mode of instruction for SLP 560, Fieldwork A, and SLP 561, Fieldwork B from C-17, Activity to C-6, Seminar-Discussion to better fit the online offering of the course.

These changes will enhance the program’s access and meet current students’ needs as they have asked for more online courses. For a long time, PHY 306 was offered only in the spring semester. This course is a prerequisite to several of the courses in our upper-division curriculum; students would be advised to take this course in the spring of their second year. This effectively made it impossible for transfer students to graduate in two years. To improve the ability of transfer students to graduate in a timely manner, the Physics Department moved this class to the fall semester, and we began advising students to take the class in the fall of their third year. PHY 310 is also offered in the fall. To allow students to complete their upper-division work in a timely manner, it should also be possible to take this course in the third year. Therefore, PHY 306 should be a co-requisite, not a pre-requisite.

Program/Course: SOC 320 Type of Change: Course Modification Proposer: Kara Dellacioppa Summary of Changes: The Sociology Department requests to offer, SOC 320, Sociology of the Family, online. SOC 320 is a popular course in Sociology and is a requirement for the Child Development Program and an elective in the Human Services Program. HUS and CDV combined have 830 majors. Inclusion of an online modality will afford students greater flexibility in completing the required coursework. This online modification will help students with limited schedules complete their coursework in a more timely manner. The Sociology Department wants to be able to offer some of the sections face-to-face and other in the online format. This will help our programs graduate students sooner. Over the last several semesters, the Sociology Department has gone from offering two sections of SOC 320 to sometimes 5 sections.

Managing the human resources of a public agency with emphasis on selected activities of recruiting, staffing, evaluating, compensating, motivating and training the work force. Procedures and legal requirements for collective bargaining, affirmative action, and equal opportunity will be explored. Three hours of seminar per week. PUB 520 Leadership in the Public Sector (3) Prerequisites: PUB 501 and PUB 502. This course provides an overview of the theoretical and practical foundations of leadership in the public sector. Explore dimensions of community-based nursing from an individual/family health to community’s overall health levels.
