Advisory and Technical Board Activities Member (2003-2004), Mentoring and Advisory Panel, National Council for Science and

the Environment: This group was created by the NCSE’s Minority Programs Office to assist its efforts in examining the recruitment of women and minority staf in the Office of Research and Development of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Chair (1998-2003) and Member (1995-present), National Alliance of NASA University Research Centers: This organization helps to promote and accomplish NASA research and educational goals through collaborative activities involving the fourteen NASA University Research Centers.

Institutional Representative, Texas Space Grant Consortium (1990-1995 and 2000-present): This organization promotes the advancement of space activities, including research and educational outreach throughout Texas.

Member, AAPT Topical Network Group on Physics and Technology (1988-1989): Served as an invited panelist and report contributor in support of AAPT's project to develop national networks addressing the needs of educators and researchers in physics and engineering.

Member, Automation and Robotics Panel, Task Force on Space Station Operations (1986-1989): In light of the Challenger disaster, NASA felt it necessary to review the anticipated operations to be performed on the Space Station in the context of automation and robotics. The task force prepared a report for NASA Headquarters describing their findings and recommendations.

Sub-Panel Chair and Member, Automation and Robotics Panel, California Space Institute (1984-1988): In August 1984, the staff of the United States Senate Appropriations Committee recommended the establishment of an independent panel to review the present and anticipated state of automation and robotics technology. The intent was to determine how such technology might be incorporated in the Space Station Program. At the request of NASA and with the approval of the Congress, the California Space Institute of the University of California organized and administered the Automation and Robotics Panel. The panel provided guidance on the application of advanced automation and robotics to the Initial Operating Capability Space Station and how the Station could evolve in order to gracefully accept future advances in these volatile technologies. The panel released a report entitled "Automation and Robotics for the National Space Program," which was presented to the U.S. Congress in March 1985.

Steering Committee Member, Industry/University Consortium on Space Automation and Robotics (1985-1986): The Universities Space Research Association created a consortium of industries and universities to promote and advance space-related automation and robotics activities.

Member, Marine Air Traffic Control and Landing System Technical Board (1978-1981): This board provided guidance and technical assistance to the US Navy on the development of systems whose purpose is to automatically control the landing of Navy and Marine aircraft at expeditionary air fields.
