Key Qualifications and Experience: Degrees: 16/11-1992: Awarded a Ph.D. degree in Social Anthropology by the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The thesis was supervised by Prof. Jonathan Friedman, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Lund, Sweden. 6/2-1984: Graduated in Social Anthropology (MSC (Mag. Scient. in Danish), including a BA in 1978 in the same discipline) from the Institute of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Was been appointed an external examiner at the Dept. of Asian Studies, University of Copenhagen, on 18 and 25 January 2005. 24/10-2004 to 10/11-2004: Organised a series of lectures for Terence Gomez, University of Malaya, Malaysia. He was to give lectures at 12 different universities and research institutions in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Furthermore, he also introduced his new China centre in Malaysia. The purpose was to initiate research collaboration with the Scandinavian countries and especially with the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS). 5/3-2003 to 6/3-2003: Organised a meeting in Hong Kong between representatives from Southeast Asia Research Centre, City University of Hong Kong, and Universitas Sam Ratulangi, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Purpose: to initiate an exchange system of student and staff between the involved research institution and universities. The meeting took place at City University of Hong Kong.

His topic: ‘Geographic Mobility and the Emergence of Ethnic Politics’. 13/4-1999 to 15/4-1999: Organised a series of lectures for Stephanie Lawson, University of East Anglia, at the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies in Copenhagen, Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies in Lund, Sweden, and at the Danish Centre for Human Rights, also in Copenhagen. Stephanie Lawson gave three lectures: “Culture, Democracy and International Politics”, “Confucianism and the Politics of Culture in Singapore”, and “Cultural Rights, Cultural Wrongs: Perspectives from Southeast Asia” respectively.

General (radio and television):

Have been invited by various Danish radio and TV stations to comment on political developments in Indonesia during the period January 1998 to May 1998, in November 1998 and again in May 1999. Was furthermore invited, while working at the International Institute of Asian Studies in Leiden, the Netherlands, in September 1999 to participate in a Danish Radio’s special news feature called “Orientering” together with the then Danish ambassador to Indonesia, Michael Stenberg, and journalist Jørgen Sigumfelt. It was an hour-long telephone interview on current affairs in Indonesia. Have since then been interviewed several times by the Danish Radio to comment on current Indonesian political developments. On several occasions during 2000 and 2001 I was invited by the Danish Radio’s special news programme (the one mentioned above) to participate in hour-long panel discussions together with Jørgen Sigumfelt and Flemming Ytzen on current social and political issues in Indonesia and Southeast Asia in general. While working in Hong Kong I was invited by the TV station ‘Star News Asia’ on 3 May 2002, 2 July 2002, 11 September 2002, 4 July 2003 and on 19 September 2003 to comment live on the current political situation in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia in general. Was furthermore interviewed by the Singapore based international TV station ‘CNBC Asia Pacific’s’ office in Hong Kong to comment live on the court case against the Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba’shir in relation to his potential connections to the terror network Jemaah Islamiyah and on terrorism in Southeast Asia in general. After returned from Hong Kong in December 2003 my contacts with Danish TV and radio stations have been renewed. In December 2003 I was interviewed by Jørgen Sigumfelt about ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia and how they relate to Mainland China conceived of as a rising economic superpower, and on 9 September 2004 I was interviewed by the Danish TV station DR2 for their programme ‘After Deadline’. The topic was on the consequences of the Jakarta bombing on 8 September 2004 and on terrorism in general in Southeast Asia. Was interviewed by the Danish TV station DR1 and by several newspapers in relation to the Tsunami catastrophe in East and Southeast Asia in January 2005 and again on October 12. 2006 about ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia. Were interviewed on 4. September and 7. December 2007 as well as on 24 January
