Selected Projects

Scientific

Austrian Grid (Phase 1 & 2)

URL: http://www.austriangrid.atPersonal Role: Administrator & ResearcherConsortium: Over 20 partners from AustriaFunding: Austrian State (bm:bwk)Description: The Austrian Grid consortium combines Austria’s leading researchers in advancedcomputing technologies with well-recognized partners in grid-dependent application areas. Thegoal of the Austrian Grid is to start and support grid computing in Austria in general, and toprovide coordination and collaboration between research areas interested in grid computing. It focuses on building up a prototype Grid infrastructure in Austria and improving existing Gridsoftware by providing high-level extensions. Potential users of Grids are invited and supported bythe Austrian Grid Consortium.

FWF Projekt Nr. P11157-INF.: Integration of GDDT with other Tools

URL: http://www.gup.uni-linz.ac.at/research/gddt/Personal Role: Software developerFunding: Austrian State (FWF)Description: GDDT (Graphical Data Distribution Tool) is a prototypical tool for source-basedvisualization of distributed data structures at the level of data-parallel programming languages. Is also offers visual programming facilities by allowing interactive and graphical specification ofdistributed data structures and automatic source code generation. Finally, due to the importanceof visualization of run-time information, the tool provides an open interface to external compilationsystems and run-time environments. A few visualization tools are provided that utilize data gainedfrom this interface. GDDT supports the HPF predecessor Vienna Fortran. Since this languagecovers a superset of HPF’s facilities, the tool may also be used for visualization of HPF datastructures. Goal of the project is to develop support for the visualization of these data structures.

FWF Projekt Nr. P11157-INF.: Visualization in Parallelization Environments

Personal Role: Visualization developerFunding: Austrian State (FWF)Description: The goal of this research topic is the development of a debugging environmentwhich helps the user in detecting errors in parallel programs for distributed memory machines. The results so far is a set of tools. This toolset is assembled within the Monitoring And DebuggingEnvironment (MAD) which will be extended by a mechanism for visualizing distributed data withinATEMPT (A Tool for Event ManiPulaTion).

e-IRG

URL: http://www.e-irg.euPersonal Role: Assistant of the Austrian RepresentativeConsortium: Over 15 representatives from EuropeFunding: Austrian State (bm:bwk)Description: The main objective of the e-Infrastructure initiative is to support the creation ofa political, technological and administrative framework for an easy and cost-effective shared useof distributed electronic resources across Europe. Particular attention is directed towards gridcomputing, storage, and networking. The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group was founded to defineand recommend best practices for the pan-European electronic infrastructure efforts. It consistsof official government delegates from all the EU countries. The e-IRG produces white papers, roadmaps and recommendations, and analyses the future foundations of the European KnowledgeSociety.

GridCoord

URL: http://www.gridcoord.orgPersonal Role: Assistant of the Austrian RepresentativeConsortium: 15 partners from EuropeFunding: EUDescription: Currently several Grid Research initiatives are on-going or planned at national andEuropean Community level. These initiatives propose the development of a rich set of advancedtechnologies, methodologies and applications, however enhanced co-ordination amongst the fundingbodies is required to achieve critical mass, avoid duplication and reduce fragmentation in orderto solve the challenges ahead. The first objective of GridCoord is to strengthen co-operationamongst the funding authorities in order to better co-ordinate the planning of future activities inthe field of Grid research, an ERA objective. A second objective is to enhance the already ongoingcollaboration among the research actors and users. A third objective is to develop, based on theabove, national and EU Programme visions and roadmaps enabling Europe to play a leadershiprole in Grid technologies and applications.

Conceptual design and implementation of a prototype for a rule-based planning-system for sanitarian constructions

Personal Role: Researcher & Software DeveloperPartner: Gascad (www.gascad.at)Funding: Research Studios AustriaDescription: The project partner GASCAD produces software packages for furniture planningin 3D. According to their positioning the solutions provide some kind of logic, which clearly dis-tinguishes them from competitors. The GASCAD planning software allows the end user to chooseand place furniture objects out of a catalogue, which contains a manufacturer specific collection.Goal of the project is to create a language for describing constraints for planning-objects in order tofoster a broader field of application of the existing software and to decouple the user-interface fromthe different collections of various manufacturers and to create a prototype verifying the proposedapproach.

Analysis of transaction-based applications in distributed heterogenious environments

Personal Role: Researcher & Software DeveloperPartner: Fabasoft International Services GmbH (www.fabasoft.com)Funding: Research Studios Austria, Fabasoft International Services GmbHDescription: Fabasoft International Services GmbH is a company working in the field of eGov-ernment and Enterprise-Content-Management. As the product of Fabasoft supports the wholecycle of activities in eGovernment systems the communication patterns of the single transactionsin regard to the different modules and layers of the application are very complex. This projectis intended to support understanding of the communication by creating an appropriate way forvisualizing the interrelationship of the single entities of their applications for fostering debuggingactivities and performance tuning.

ARGE Schuldnerberatung

URL: http://www.schuldnerberatung.atPersonal Role: Software developerDescription: ARGE Schuldnerberatung is a institute for supporting people having financial prob-lems by helping them creating budgets and by decreasing their expenditures. One of the servicesis to offer lectures and courses. Goal of this project was the developement of a tool supporting theadmistration of the set of courses during the whole life-cycle of such measures.

ETB Verlag

URL: http://www.atzooe.at/etb-verlagPersonal Role: Software developerDescription: ETB Verlag Rohrbach is a publisher of stamps, offering their goods to philatelistin Austria. Goal ofthis project was a system supporting the collection of this data and modules for the calculation ofstatistics and the creation of charts.

Gascad

URL: www.gascad.atPersonal Role: Software developerDescription: The project partner GASCAD produces software packages for furniture planning in3D, whereas most of their software was developed using Microsoft Visual C++. In course of thedevelopments of new markets their programs had to be translated into various languages, withoutthe need to redesign interfaces and recompilation. Mission of this project was the creation ofa system, parsing existing applications for strings, feeding them into to a dictionary and finallypatching the application with the new language sets.
