About Kate Swaffer: Kate is the 2017 SA Australian Of The Year. She received the University ofWollongong’sAlumniSocialImpactAwardforherglobalworkindementiain2016,andwasamongsttheWestpac/Financial Review100Womenof Influence announced for 2016.Amongst a numberof otherprestigiousawards,shewasalsothe InauguralwinneroftheStirlingUniversity InternationalDementiaLeader in 2015, andwinner as an Emerging Leader in DisAbility Awareness in theNational AustralianDisAbilityAwardsin2015.ShewasalsoinvitedtogivetheAAGSirKeithWilsonOrationinJune2017.Kate is the onlyAustralianwho is a fullmember of theWorldDementia Council, a boardmemberofAlzheimer’s Disease International, and she is the Chair, CEO and co-founder of theDementia AllianceInternational,aglobaladvocacyandsupportgroupforpeoplelivingwithdementia.KateisacurrentPhDstudent (currently on a leave of absence in 2017), an Honorary Associate Fellow with the Faculty ofScience,MedicineandHealth,UniversityofWollongong,aFellowoftheRSA,andanInternationalFellowat Canterbury Christ ChurchUniversity. She completed aMasters of Science in Dementia Carewith aDistinctionin2014.Sheisalsoaretiredchefhavingrunherownhospitalitybusinessesfortenyears,andbeforethatworkedasnurseworkedindementiaandagedcareandthenoperatingtheatres.Notably, inherhuman rightswork, she is the first person livingwith adiagnosis of dementia tohavebeen an invited keynote speaker at the World Health Organisation (WHO), at the First MinisterialConferenceonDementiainMarch2015,whereshedemandedhumanrights,accesstotheConventionontheRightsofPersonswithDisabilities(CRPD)forallpeoplewithdementiaandabalanceinresearchbetween care and cure on the global stage. These demandswere included in theWHO Final Call ToAction,andhuman rightswere included in theGlobalActionPlan forDementiaadoptedat theWorldHealthAssemblyinMay2017.Kate iscurrentlyan influentialhumanitarianandactivist forhumanrights foragedanddementiacare.Shehasalwaysstoodupforsocialjusticeasanadvocateorinvolunteeringroles,andstillvolunteersforthehomelessinSouthAustralia,andtheBereavedThroughSuicideSupportGroup(SA)Incorporated.She is also awidelypublishedacademic, author andpoet.Her firstbookondementia,WhatTheHellHappened to My Brain?: Living Beyond Dementia, and her second dementia book Diagnosed withAlzheimer’soranotherdementia,co-authoredwithAssociateProfessorLee-FayLowwerebothreleasedin 2016. Her first two volumes of poetrywere published in 2012 and 2016, and her third volume iscurrentlyinpress.Hernexttwobooksondementia,oneonpositivelysupportingpeoplediagnosedwithdementia,theotheronhumanrights,arebothplannedtobereleasedin2018.Since2010,KateSwafferhasbeenactivelyworkingwithafocusonhumanrightsandaccesstotheCRPDforpeoplewithdementia,andhasgivenmorethan800invitedkeynotepresentationsonanumberoftopics,notonlyinthefieldofdementiaandhumanrights,butondisAbility,discrimination,stigma,thelived experience of dementia, dementia-enabling design principles, language, Dementia FriendlyCommunities,PrescribedDisengagement®,InformationTechnologyforpeoplewithdementia,advocacy,dementiapolicy(local,nationalandglobal)andlossandgrief.Therehasbeenadistincttransformationinherworkfromadvocacytoactivism,inAustraliaandontheglobalstageforallpeoplewithdisAbilities,andspecificallydisAbilitiescausedbyadiagnosisofadementia.KateactivelysupportsDignityPartySA.Katealsoworkedasamotivationalspeakerfrom1992-1996,withGrahamWrightandAssociates,aspartoftheSuccessMotivationInstitute(nowLeadershipManagementAustralia).
