Section B - Summary of the achievements track-record as an independent researcher

Dr. Julio Lloret Fillol has started a new research group at the ICIQ since November of 2014. Currently, the

working research group is mainly formed by:

Prof. LLORET FILLOL JULIO 20825037D Principal Researcher - CELEX-ICIQ-ICREA

The research lines of the group at the ICIQ are devoted to providing further understanding on mechanism

principles participating in artificial photosynthetic schemes and develop systems for the synthesis of fine

chemicals:

1) Reductive chemistry for the synthesis of fine chemicals and fuels.

I have been awarded with a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council to develop this project.

a. Water Reduction (WR): We have identified new highly efficient cobalt molecular water reduction

catalysts that operate in both photo- and electrochemical (J. Lloret and co. Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20,

6171) conditions, with improved performances through electronic tuning of the ligand (> 8500 TON

and 52000 TON/h). We have also unequivocally identified the metal protonation as the rate

determining step of the light-driven H2 evolution mechanism (Chem. Sci., 2018, 9, 2609. This article

is part of the themed collections: Editors’ Choice Collection, Collection to celebrate our diverse and

global authorship). We have taken advantage of the ligand platform versatility to study the effect of

secondary effects in catalysis by developing artificial metalloenzymes. Interesting enough, the

catalytic performance improved upon catalyst encapsulation in streptavidin. We suggested that the

protein pocket aid the delivery of protons over the catalytic center.

b. CO2 Reduction Catalysis (RC): We have also studied the CO2 reduction activity for the same cobalt

complexes and studied the mechanism of action (Under preparation). On the other hand, and in

collaboration with Prof. B. Royo (ITQB, Nova University of Lisbon) we have developed the first

purely organometallic Mn complexes for CO2 reduction. The systems reveal an extraordinary

electrocatalytic CO2 reduction activity even in the absence of protons. Mechanistic insights reveal

proposed intermediates in CO2 reduction such as [Mn(CO)4] [M-OCOH] and [M-H] (Angew. Chem.

Int. Ed. 2018, 57, 4603).

c. Modify electrodes with COFs: We have developed new COFs based on the {Mn(CO)3} motive

characterized by 13C-NMR, IR and EXAFS, with high catalytic activity and good selectivity for CO2

reduction to CO at low overpotential in water at pH 7.5.

d. Reactivity of organometallic complexes: We are also exploring the reactivity of 1st-row transition

metal complexes based on the tripodal C3‐Symmetric HTIM(PR2)3 family of ligands (Eur. J. Inorg.

Chem. 2018, 23, 2612; Cover picture; ICIQ special issue). The systems are catalytically active and

selective for the hydroboration of CO2 to formic acid. Moreover, the nickel derivates are highly active

and selective for the hydrogenation of N-heterocycles.

e. Towards Light-driven Water Reduction Catalysis; Beyond Artificial Photosynthesis: Same cobalt

complexes developed for WR are also active catalyst for the reduction of ketones to alcohols using

Page 7: Curriculum Vitae Dr. Julio Lloret Fillol€¦ · 2 Section A - Short Curriculum Vitae Dr. Julio Lloret Fillol (18/03/1977) Researcher ID: A-3102-2009 Current Position ICREA Research

7

water as a source of H2 and light as the driving source (A. Call and J. Lloret-Fillol Chem Sci, 2017,

8, 4739 (Cover picture) and Chem. Commun. 2018, 9643).

2) Oxidation Chemistry; Water Oxidation Catalysts (WOC).

Water is the most appealing global-scale source of electrons that can be used to store energy into chemical

bonds. However, it is also considered one of the bottlenecks for the development of artificial photosynthesis.

WO needs to be catalyzed in order to proceed at low energy barriers and practical reaction rates. Intermediates

involved in water oxidation are highly unstable, and their characterization is still very challenging (CCR 2017,

334, 2 and book chapters 2018-2019, CV publications 73-74).

a. Well-defined Iron Complexes for WO: in collaboration with Dr. M. Costas: We have discovered

highly efficient homogeneous iron catalysts for WO (Lloret et al. Nat. Chem. 2011, 807-813). These

findings constitute a breakthrough in the field of WOC. Further studies allowed me to suggest two

new intermediates in WO and organic oxidation a FeV=O (Chem. Eur. J. 2012, 18, 13269) and a rare

{Fe-O-Ce} intermediate (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 8042, Highlighted in Angewandte Chemie and as

Frontispiece). Theoretical studies, carried out in my group, aid me to unravel the mechanism of WO

catalyzed by non-heme iron complexes, the ligand role, and the requirements to develop active

catalysts for WO (Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 5696 and Inorg. Chem. 2014, 53, 5474-5485). Recently, I

have finally characterized the proposed exotic {Fe-O-Ce} intermediate (resonance Raman, EXAFS,

high-field EPR, and Mössbauer) in collaboration with Prof. L. Que and Prof. E. Münck. The discovery

of this heterometallic complex opens the possibility to study in detail the role of the Lewis acid in the

O-O bond formation reaction, mimicking the PSII. (Nature Commun. 2015 NCOMMS-14-03271A)

These results call the attention of Prof. K. Morokuma among others, which embarked in studying

theoretical aspects of the reaction. Also, I have led to the discovery of the reactivity enhancement (100

fold) of an oxo-iron(IV) towards oxygen atom transfer reactions by photochemical irradiation, J.

Lloret-Fillol, and co. JACS 2014 136, 4624. We have also improved 10-fold the water oxidation

catalysts by deuteration of oxidation-sensitive sites. More importantly, this provides the strongest

evidence of a molecular system in the literature (JACS 2019, 141, 323).

b. Well-defined Ruthenium Complexes for WO: We have elucidated the WO mechanism for

homologous Ru complexes (Chem. Eur. J. 2016, 22, 20111). Among the most challenging are the

intermediates located after the O-O bond formation event, which is irreversible and usually the rate

determining step. For this reason, there is no clear experimental information of the reactivity nor the

intermediates after the O-O bond formation event. Fortunately, we have obtained a full

characterization and reactivity of an intermediate located after the O-O bond formation. The

characterized intermediate is better described as a RuIV-peroxo species using spectroscopic (L-edge

XAS, Raman) and spectrometric studies in combination with theoretical calculations (Manuscript in

preparation).

c. Materials. Molecular complexes are convenient platforms for study mechanism of water oxidation.

However, their instability against oxidative damage challenges their technological application. On the

other hand, mix metal oxides (MM’Ox) are extremely robust materials. However, their understanding

is more challenging. In this regard, we are developing synthetic protocols to control wet synthesis

MM’Ox that gives highly active materials which can also serve as model systems for study.

3) Computational Mechanistic Investigation.

We have usually combined experimental and theoretical studies (in collaboration with J. M. Lluis at

UdG) to understand the reaction mechanisms better. Just an example of operative pathways in Ag

catalyzed cross-coupling reactions (Nature Commun 2014).

4) Development of Hight Throughput Experimental Techniques.

In other to accelerate the development of light-driven methodologies we have developed parallel

screening platforms of 24 and 48 reactions under temperature (-80 to 120 ºC) and light intensity control.

A new design provides an anaerobic environment which allows for low-temperature studies. The

irradiation is homogeneous in all reaction positions with a standard deviation lower than 2.5 %. The

system can be calibrated with a convenient toolkit to control all different variables precisely.
