14. Brief biography Henry Wai-chung Yeung received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 1995. He is Distinguished Professor (and Professor of Economic Geography since 2005) at the Department of Geography, National University of Singapore. His research interests cover broadly theories and the geography of transnational corporations, global production networks and global value chains, East Asian firms and developmental states in the global economy. In December 2017, he was selected by the American Association of Geographers to receive the AAG Distinguished Scholarship Honors for 2018 “in recognition of his extraordinary scholarship and leadership in the discipline”. Earlier in June 2017, he was conferred the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Murchison Award 2017 in the UK for “pioneering publications in the field of globalisation”. He was also a recipient of the inaugural University Research Recognition Award 2018 of the National University of Singapore, NUS Outstanding University Researcher Award (1998) and NUS Outstanding Researcher Award (2008), the Institute of British Geographers Economic Geography Research Group Best Published Paper Award (1998), the Commonwealth Fellowship (2002), the Fulbright Foreign Research Award (2003), and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Team Residency (2005) and Writing Resident Fellowship (2012-2013) in Bellagio. In September 2012 he was conferred Academician by the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK. He has also held honorary professorships at the University of Manchester (UK), Henan University (China), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China), and visiting professorships at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Sydney (Australia). In July 2014, Professor Yeung (Principal Investigator) was awarded a US$4 million strategic grant by the National University of Singapore to establish the Global Production Networks Centre at NUS. Co-directed with Professor Neil Coe, this GPN@NUS Centre was established in October 2014 and is expected to pursue cutting-edge academic research during the grant tenure (till September 2017) and thereafter if future funding is secured. To date, Professor Yeung has published widely on transnational corporations from East Asia, global production networks, and the political economy of development. His latest books are Strategic Coupling: East Asian Industrial Transformation in the New Global Economy (Cornell Studies in Political Economy Series, Cornell University Press, Ithaca, May 2016) and Global Production Networks: Theorizing Economic Development in an Interconnected World (co-authored with Neil Coe and published by Oxford University Press in April 2015). His previous monographs are Transnational Corporations and Business Networks (Routledge, London, 1998), Entrepreneurship and the Internationalisation of Asian Firms (Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, 2002) and Chinese Capitalism in a Global Era (Routledge, London, 2004). He is also co-author of Economic Geography: A Contemporary Introduction (Blackwell, Oxford, 2007/2013/2019). Apart from authoring these six books, Professor Yeung is editor of The Globalisation of Business Firms from Emerging Markets, Two Volumes (Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, 1999) and Handbook of Research on Asian Business (Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, 2007), Globalizing Regional Development in East Asia (Routledge, London, 2010), and co-editor of Globalisation and the Asia Pacific: Contested Territories, (Routledge, London, 1999), Globalization of Chinese Business Firms (Macmillan, New York, 2000), Remaking the Global Economy: Economic-Geographical Perspectives (Sage, London, 2003), and Global Value Chains and Global Production Networks: Changes in the International Political Economy (Routledge, London, 2015). He serves as the economic geography section editor of

Professor Yeung has just over 100 research papers published or forthcoming in internationally refereed journals and 50 chapters in books. He is Editor of Environment and Planning A (2001-now) and Economic Geography (2001-now), and Past Editor of Review of International Political Economy (2004-2013), Asia-Pacific Editor of Global Networks (2001-now), and Business Manager of Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography. He sits on the editorial boards of 18 other international journals in the fields of human geography, management, urban studies, area studies, and general social science, such as Asia Pacific Journal of Management, European Urban and Regional Studies, Journal of Economic Geography, Asia Pacific Viewpoint, and Eurasian Geography and Economics. During 2003-2005, he was the East Asia Director, Asia Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. Between 2008 and 2015, he was a member of the Board of Trustees and Vice Chair (2013-2015) of the Regional Studies Association (UK). Since 2001, he has been the Southeast Asia Representative on the Commonwealth Geographical Bureau Management Committee. Professor Yeung is frequently invited with full/partial funding to speak at international conferences, workshops, and symposiums. Between 1995 and May 2019, he made over 99 invited trips to speak in such diverse regions as the Americas: US(10), Canada(2), Brazil(1), and St. Lucia(1); Europe: Ireland(3), Denmark(3), Finland(1), Germany(5), Hungary(1), Italy(1), Spain(2), Sweden(1), Switzerland(1), the Netherlands(2), and the UK(13); the Middle East: Dubai(1); and the Asia Pacific: Australia(5), China(12), Hong Kong(11), Japan(3), Macau(1), Malaysia(4), New Zealand(2), the Philippines (1), South Korea(4), Taiwan(5), and Thailand(2). In the public domain, he has done consultancy work for Samsung Electronics, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore Government, the Central Policy Unit, Hong Kong SAR Government, Asian Development Bank Institute, the UNCTAD, and the Commonwealth Secretariat. His comments have been quoted in The Economist (London), Forbes Asia (New York), The Financial Times (London), Agence France Presse (Beijing), Business Times (Singapore), Straits Times (Singapore), The Standard (Hong Kong), CNBC Live (Hong Kong), and CFO Asia (Hong Kong). He also gave invited presentations to major policy makers, such as the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (Nov 2017). As of 14 May 2019, over 3,636 publications listed in the ISI Web of Science Core Collection databases cited his work (excluding self-citations; h-index = 33). Some 336 and 278 of these citing papers were respectively published in 2018 and 2017. Altogether, his work has now been cited over 4,700 times by the same set of ISI WoS publications (17,400 citations on Google Scholar). The ISI Web of Science database shows that he has 12 journal papers each receiving over 100 citations. The ISI Essential Science Indicators (2002-2012) has ranked him as the 241st highly cited scientist among 4,672 entries in the field of Social Sciences, General. This ranking is based on the total number of citations of his papers published in journals indexed in the ISI Web of Science between 2002 and 2012. On the basis of the age-weighted h-index, he was ranked first in a recent listing of top 50 cited human geographers in the world published in the Journal of Economic Geography (2010, Vol.10).
