1. A CEl\TTRALCORE OF KNo-WLEDGE OF, AND SKILLS COlvll\10N TO ,ALL SURGICAL SPECIALTIES: viz., anatomy, physiology, metabolism, pathology, woundhealing, shock and resuscitation, neoplasia and nutrition.

2. THE DIAGNOSIS, PRE-OPERATIVE, OPERATIVE, AND POST-OPERATIVE CARE, INCLUDING THAT PROVIDED IN THE EMERGENCYDEP ARTJ\1ENTA.ND THE INTENSIVE CARE mUT, OF PATIENTS WITH DISEASE OFTHE FOLLOwrnG PRlMARY COlv1PONENTS:

A. THE ALllvffiNT ARY TRACT

B. THE ABDOMEN AND ITS CONTENTS

C. THE BREAST

D. THE HEAD AND NECK

E. THE VASCULAR SYSTEM, excluding the intracranial vessels, the heartand those vessels intrinsic and immediately adjacent thereto.

F. THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

G. THE TOTAL MANAGEMENT OF TRAUMA, including musculosketal,. hand and head injuries. The responsibility for all phases of care of the injured patient is anessential component of general surgery.

3. ADEQUATE EMPLOYMENT OFENDOSCOPIC TECHNIQUES,PARTICULARLY RlGID PROCTOSIGMOIDOSCOPY AND OPERJ'>.TIVECHOLEDOCHOSCOPY. In addition, the general surgeon must be familiar with a variety ofendoscopic techniques such as laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, gastroscopy,colonoscopy and peritoneoscopy.

4. ADDITIONALLY AS SECONDARY COJ:v.[POJ:\lENTS,the general surgeon isexpected to possess understanding of the principles of and to have acquired a personal clinicalexperience, to include operative care, in the more common problems in thoracic, cardiac,gynecologic, neurologic, orthopaedic, plastic, neonatal and urologic surgery and anesthesiology.Appropriate clinical experience in the special disciplines enumerated in the preceding sentenceshould be acquired by a formal rotation on a separately constituted service, or by having been theoperating surgeon or first assistant surgeon on an acceptable number and variety of cases.
