Cornell University, Laboratory for Elem. Particle Physics, Ithaca, NY Research Associate: October 2001 – July 2006

Played a leading role in many key projects of the Laboratory, including basic cavity R&D, SRF for the CESR storage ring, and a future Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) X-ray source. Continued research on high gradient superconduct-ing cavities. Designed a new generation of SRF cavities for future high cur-rent ERLs. Studied high beam current effects in superconducting linacs. Or-ganized and led the design of the pioneering CW high current injector cry-omodule for the Cornell University ERL. Strongly involved in the overall de-sign study for a future Cornell ERL light source. Developed a novel ultra-fast digital feedback control to stabilize the RF field in superconducting cavities.

DESY, Hamburg, Germany PhD thesis research as Research Assistant: September 1998 – Sept. 2001 Thesis topic: High Effective Gradients in Superconducting Multicell Cavities.

Significantly contributed to the design and prototyping of a new type of su-perconducting RF structure based on coupled multicell cavities. Studied the excitation and damping of mechanical vibrations in multicell cavities at cryo-genic temperatures. Developed, built and tested a novel fast piezoelectric fre-quency tuner for superconducting cavities. Demonstrated for the first time ac-tive compensation of Lorentz force detuning in pulsed cavity operation.

Cornell University, Laboratory of Nuclear Studies, Ithaca, NY Visiting Scientist: October 1998 - March 1999

Studied surface preparation techniques supporting highest fields in supercon-ducting RF cavities beyond 25 MV/m. Investigated the physics of the high-field increase in the surface resistance found in superconducting cavities.

DESY, Hamburg, Germany Research for Master Degree: June 1997 - August 1998

Thesis topic: RF Field Control in S.C. Cavities with Beam Loading. Contributed to the design, start up and commissioning of the pioneering digi-tal RF control system for the superconducting cavities in the TESLA Test Fa-cility linac. Focused on beam loading related aspects. Developed an adaptive feed forward control to compensate beam loading and Lorentz force detuning effects. Participated in achieving first SASE FEL lasing at the TTF linac.

Summer Student: July 1996 - September 1996 Worked on the novel digital RF control system of the TESLA Test Facility and on developing a temperature mapping diagnostic system for the RF test of superconducting cavities.

Topic: (a) Benefit near term high gradient SRF applications by understanding the causes of quench at high fields in present-day niobium cavities, and (b) open the long-range prospects for SRF applications by experimentally verify-ing the recent theoretical prediction for new cavity materials such as Nb3Sn and MgB2. These predictions show that ultimately gradients of 100 MV/m to 200 MV/m may become possible as material imperfections are overcome.
