M. Professional Agenda

Over the years, my professional interests are focused on a few fields: new music; specific

theortical and analytical aspects of music; Jewish and Israeli music; and philosophy of music.

My main activities have been teaching and mentoring; writing on music; editing and

translating various texts; collecting, archiving, documenting and producing recordings; and

composing. It is my aim to achieve insight and clarity in the subject matters I deal with.

Cherishing hard labor, I am fully aware of the responsibility with which it must be done.

These are my plans for the near future:

Running the best I can the Music Department of the University of Haifa, trying to make some

significant development plans of it become soon truth.

Writing a book on Luigi Nono and his compositions, commissioned by the Committee for

Music Books at the National Council for Culture and Arts, Israel

An article I wrote about the use of text in compositions by Helmut Lachenmann

(commissioned for issue 2 of Pe’imot, journal for music and culture published by Resling

Publishing House, Tel Aviv) will soon be published.

Composing a large-scale piece for piano for Pavlos Antoniadis

Preparing for print the manuscripts of my two 5-lecture series on specific aspects of

contemporary music (held in (held in 2009/10 & 2010/11 at the Felicia Blumental Music

Center, Tel Aviv)

Teaching Jewish and Israeli Music a whole semester at the Abraham Geiger Kolleg, affiliated

to the Potsdam University upon the invitation of Prof. Walter Homolka, the University's

Rector (probably during winter 2013)

My lecture on “Israeli Music between East and West”, held on July 13, 2010, at a conference

which had been organized at the University of Potsdam, Germany, is soon to be published in

a book (conference proceedings), edited by Jascha Nemtsov.

My lecture on “Julius Chajes’ Family Roots and his Life Route from Lvov, through Vienna,

Tel Aviv and Vienna again, to Detroit – The Viennese Roots of the Mediterranean School of

Israeli Music and their Spreading in the US-American Exile”, held in October 22, 2011, at a

conference which had been organized by Meetingpoint Messiaen in Görlitz, is soon to be

published in a book (conference proceedings), edited by Albrecht Goetze.

My lecture on “Music in the shadow of recognizing the loss of language – Il Canto sospeso

by Luigi Nono is 55 years old”, held on October 25 at the Sapir College in the framework of

its 7th

Forum will be published in a book.

I’ve been invited to lecture in Darmstadt, Germany, on April 14, 2012, in the framework of a

conference held by the Institute for New Music and Music Education. My lecture will focus

on Rebecca Saunder’s Violin Concerto.

I’ve been invited to teach for the second time at the International Summer Courses for New

Music in Darmstadt during the two last weeks of July 2012. Together with Uli Mosch (Sacher

Foundation Basel, Salzburg Music Academy) and Christoph Neidhöfer (McGill University,

Canada) I’ll direct the “Aesthetics, Theory, Analysis” seminar.
