• Analysis of network requirements of new users' applications: multimedia conferencing

systems, office information systems, high resolution image transfers and browsing. Various performance studies for assessing the communications network requirements were conducted. Part of this study was conducted in collaboration with Bell Canada.

• Design of Distributed Information Systems (Office Information Systems, Multimedia

Medical Information Systems). Definition of various system architectures required for supporting various users' applications. Different protocol architectures were also considered: TCP/IP, NetBIOS and OSI-based systems.

• Participation to the development of an inter-hospital communications system. During the

first quarter of 1989, a first prototype of the system was under trial at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The system was extensively used by the medical staff of the Radiology and Emergency Departments. During the first quarter of 1991, a second prototype was installed interconnecting the Ottawa Civic Hospital and the General Hospital via a T1 link.

• Design and development of a LAN-ISDN Inter-connection system. This system was based

on a PC-based architecture. Two PC-based gateways were built enabling the interconnection of two Ethernet networks via a basic rate access (BRA) link (144 kbps).

• Conducted a seminar on "Multimedia Communications" at the University of Ottawa. This

seminar was given as a part of a series covering various aspects of the research conducted at the Multimedia Communications Laboratory.
