L. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans

In my research I focus mainly on three areas (1) Basic concepts in art therapy (including

the effectiveness of art therapy) (2) Measuring art based interventions. (3) Parent-child

art psychotherapy.

Basic concepts in Art therapy - Part of my research deals with basic concepts that

need to be addressed in the art therapy profession. For example: Theoretical orientation

– In art therapy we use psychological theories in order to understand processes that take

place in our clinical work. The translation of these theories to art therapy is not always

simple. I investigated the phenomenological approach to art therapy during my M.A.

thesis. I have now finished supervising Alona Granot who is researching the Jungian

Theory and its application to art therapy. Another example - Art therapy in the

educational system – Many art therapists in Israel work in the educational system. The

encounter between the educational system and the clinical system is not always easy.

Dr. Snir and I met with the main supervisors of art therapists in the Ministry of

Education. In collaboration with them we are now conducting interviews with teachers,

counselors, principals, art therapists and supervisors in the Jewish and in the Arab

sectors in order to hear their voices regarding the complex position of being an art

therapist in the educational system.

Measuring art based interventions – Dr. Snir and I were interested in finding a

quantitative way to measure art based interventions (Similar to the Session Evaluation

Questionnaire that is well known in psychotherapy research). We were involved in a

large study that focused on the reactions of creators to different art materials. From the

17מתוך 20

reflections that were gathered in this study, the ABI (Art Based Intervention

Questionnaire) was built. We have already published an article regarding this new tool

and we have many studies in process that show correlations between responses to the

ABI and other measures. The ABI was already presented in conferences in Israel, the

U.S.A and Korea.

Parent-child psychotherapy – I believe that involving parents in therapy is an effective

way of treating children. I have researched the effectiveness of this model regarding

movement therapy (together with Mrs. Kedem and Prof. Guttmann) and we are

currently also testing it regarding art therapy (together with Mrs. Chasid and Dr. Snir).

Regarding parent-child evaluation through joint paintings I am involved in several

studies. We (Dr. Snir and myself) are also trying to consolidate the knowledge in the

practice of parent-child art psychotherapy by interviewing art therapists that work

according to this model. We have submitted two articles as part of this project and we

are now in the process of writing a book on the subject.

Planned Projects and Publications

Treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with art and hyperbaric oxygen

therapy: A physical-emotional interventional study – The goal of this study (together

with Prof. Lev-Wiesel, Mrs. Jacobs-Kayam from Haifa University and Dr. Efrati and

Dr. Stolar from Assaf Harofeh Medical Center) is to evaluate the contribution of a dual-

faceted treatment modality for ADHD, aimed at combining art therapy with hyperbaric

oxygen therapy.

International research - In the past few years Dr. Snir and I have made contact with art

therapists from other places around the world (U.S.A, Germany, Lichtenstein and

Korea). We are now trying to initiate international cooperation in research. Our first

study will be regarding joint paintings of mothers and children in different places.

The effectiveness of Art Therapy in schools in Israel – As I have mentioned before,

Dr. Snir and I met with the main supervisors of art therapists in the Ministry of

Education. In collaboration with them we will start a pilot this year that will collect data

before, during and after art therapy sessions in schools.
