    Research Statement

Biophysical parameters including landcover, land surface temperature (LST), tree canopy

density etc, are of great importance in assessing environmental change. Modern operational

space-borne sensors with spectral sensitivity in the thermal infra-red spectrum, allow monitoring of

the Earth’s thermal field at a moderate spatial resolution. Thermal imagery products are available

on regular and frequent basis for both land and oceans. Data availability stimulates the analysis of

the long time series of thermal images in an attempt to closely monitor regions and provide

information about the changes in LST from multi-temporal imagery.

Accordingly, digital elevation models (DEMs) are freely available through the Internet providing

global coverage and assisting various environmental applications. A variety of quantitative

techniques (terrain modeling) has been developed to automate the extraction of terrain features

from DEMs. Terrain modeling includes terrain segmentation to elementary objects, parametric

representation and classification of objects, on the basis of their spatial 3-dimensional

arrangement. These methods allow (a) to recognize and monitor natural hazards and

    environmental change.

Earth is composed from many regions of diverse environmental attributes, landcover and

biophysical conditions. The quantification of the knowledge related to the various regions included

in is a key factor in an attempt to characterize the landscape, assess the sensitivity to natural

hazards and support environmental analysis and planning at moderate resolution scale.

The aim of the current/recent research efforts of mine is to incorporate biophysical data derived

from satellites, in the terrain modeling working chain, by integrating LST and elevation data in the

parametric representation of the terrain objects. It involves among others, terrain segmentation to

spatial objects by taking into account geomorphometric parameters (elevation, slope, etc),

landcover as well as the definition of indices that reveal the objects diversity. Such effort could

assist natural hazard and risk assessment, environmental assessment, global change studies and

urban/rural planning in a changing world.

My research interests are described right below:

    1. Climatic change, biophysical mapping and environmetrics: landcover change, multi-

temporal analysis/modeling of land-surface temperature/LST and sea surface

temperature/SST data, biophysical mapping, environmental monitoring, biophysical terrain

analysis, integration of elevation, biophysical and lancover data for terrain evaluation/site

    selection/ environmental urban planning,

  • 26/01/2011 4 / 13

    2. Landcover mapping, vegetation height/biomass volumes estimate from the US digital

terrain model (NED) and the SRTM digital surface model, landcover assessment,

vulnerability assessment on the basis of landcover and elevation data.

    3. Natural hazards: landslides, seismic hazard, forest fires monitoring and impact

assessment, geomorphologic processes modeling, morpho-tectonic processes modeling,

    flood hazard assessment.

    4. Geothermal mapping: volcanism and geothermal activity monitoring in both the land and

the sea from LST/SST data, geothermal fields reconnaissance from modern biophysical

data, terrain modeling of volcanic terrains.

    5. Segmentation: terrain segmentation, terrain pattern recognition, segmentation of

biophyscial datasets for environmental modeling building class segmentation from LIDAR

elevation data, morphotectonic and fluvial landforms delineation from DEMs.

    6. Multi-temporal datasets modeling and analysis: for environmental studies, biophysical

    mapping and climatic change assessment.

    7. Terrain modeling, terrain analysis, terrain evaluation for site selection, DEM accuracy

    assessment.

    8. Geoinformation, topographic and base mapping, thematic mapping from modern imagery,

object extraction and building reconstruction from LiDAR datasets, design of spatial

    databases, spatial decision making.

    9. Programming: I am author of 3 software environments: a) GeoLogic Shell (terrain

modelling & GIS) that is distributed from the Int.As. for Mathematical Geology, b)

GeoFuzzy Shell (spatial decision making & modelling), c) TAES (Terrain Analysis Expert

System). Software environments: used in teaching and in research includes: Erdas

Imagine, ArcGIS, ErMapper, ENVI, TAS, TAP, IDRISI, MATLAB, Smart Elements, CLIPS, etc.

as well as self-developed software shells.
