1 Cursillistas New and Old Share the Fire that Burns in YOUR Heart By Tim Hays Central Indiana Cursillo Center The fall men’s and women’s weekends are over and we are quickly approaching the season that celebrates the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. There is no better way to prepare for Christmas or Easter than working as a team member or being a candidate on the weekends that fall right before these special holidays. The Reunion Ultreya follows each weekend and is a perfect opportunity for all new cursillistas to meet the Cursillo Community. The Fourth Day starts on Monday following your weekend and the conversion process never ends. We continue to strengthen and renew what we learned during our weekend which leads us to Holiness through Piety, Formation through Study, and Evangelization through Action as we prepare for our Fifth Day, which will be our most glorious day when we finally meet our Lord. Postcursillo is the ongoing conversion that started when we made up our minds to attend the weekend and we truly committed ourselves to Christ. The Vital Few Objective for Postcursillo is: “We will reach out and encourage ALL cursillistas to practice ALL aspects of their Fourth Day, continuing the transformation to live an authentic Christian life which began during the weekend.” The fire that burns in our hearts is shared with others when we meet in group reunions and when we gather at an ultreya. We have a responsibility to motivate and support all cursillistas to grow within the Cursillo community. The basic purpose of the Postcursillo is to renew and accelerate the conversion process by helping ALL new cursillistas to find a friendship group and to attend Ultreyas. The Holy Spirit gave each of us an opportunity to live the 3-Day Cursillo. He designed this Special Gift to be effective in bringing about the changes needed in our lives today and everyday until we die. Remember the Thursday evening before your weekend and recapture your thoughts and feelings. Then recall Sunday evening, at the closing, and how you tried to describe your personal experience of the past three days. Please ponder this thought: During your Cursillo, you experienced 15 Friendship Group Reunions as you and your tablemates discussed the various Rollos, at a very personal level. Each evening you experienced three Ultreyas, two cloistered and one at the closing, as you shared your posters, thoughts and reflections of each day and for all three days. Finally, the whole experience was a School of Leaders, as each of you learned about God’s personal call to you for a new and deeper relationship with Him. Weren’t you surprised on Sunday evening, after only three days, by the depth of your new friendships; By your renewed understanding of God’s love for you; By your desire to become holy, to become Christian and to live an Authentic Christian Life; By your motivation to make the changes God wants you to make in your life? If we can comprehend the change that took place in each of us, in just three days, imagine a lifetime of Friendship Group Reunion, Ultreya and School of leaders. We need to be refreshed and experience conversion constantly to live up to the commitments we made to God on our Cursillo. The Holy Spirit has given us a Method, the Cursillo Method. Please don’t let the Holy Spirit’s Gift of a Lifetime of the Cursillo Method go to waste. Make a conscious decision, today, to recapture the weekend and to live your life with and for God supported by finding and getting involved in a Group, attending Ultreya and participating in the School of Leaders. Cursillistas – New and Old

The fall men’s and women’s weekends are over and we are quickly approaching the season that celebrates the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The Reunion Ultreya follows each weekend and is a perfect opportunity for all new cursillistas to meet the Cursillo Community. The Fourth Day starts on Monday following your weekend and the conversion process never ends. We continue to

The Vital Few Objective for Postcursillo is: “We will reach out and encourage ALL cursillistas to practice ALL aspects of their Fourth Day, continuing the transformation to live an authentic Christian life which began during the weekend.”

The fire that burns in our hearts is shared with others when we meet in group reunions and when we gather at an ultreya. We have a responsibility to motivate and support all cursillistas to grow within the Cursillo community. The basic purpose of the Postcursillo is to renew and accelerate the conversion process by helping ALL new cursillistas to find a friendship group and to attend Ultreyas. Reflect on the gift of faith (PIETY)

Deepen our knowledge and understanding of the teachings of the Church (STUDY)

Read, reflect, and pray with the scripture

Nourish and strengthen our faith through the holy Eucharist

Open “the door of faith” for others (Action, bringing a friend to Christ). It is obvious after reading the purpose behind “The Year of Faith” that the Cursi l lo Community is already living a life that is parallel to what the Holy Father has proclaimed. DeColores!

The Holy Spirit gave each of us an opportunity to live the 3-Day Cursillo. He designed this Special Gift to be effective in bringing about the changes needed in our lives today and everyday until we die. Remember the Thursday evening before your weekend and recapture your thoughts and feelings. Then recall Sunday evening, at the closing, and how you tried to describe your personal experience of the past three days.

your posters, thoughts and reflections of each day and for all three days. Finally, the whole experience was a School of Leaders, as each of you learned about God’s personal call to you for a new and deeper relationship with Him.

T he Voice is changing! Yes, we are changing with the times. We want to distribute our Voice over email for those that can receive it that way and we will brighten up the pages with some

- COLOR. We hope that with your help and with a team of dedicated Cursillistas we can publish a well-read, useful and valuable publication. We will have the usual insightful pieces for the Pre-, Post, and 3-day Cursillo and include other articles on the Cursillo Movement in general and how we can live the Cusillo lifestyle.

Going Green! Starting next year in 2013 we intend to ask those that can receive the Voice by email to do so by signing up for it. As the good Lord has placed us on this earth to be stewards of all its' resources we think this is the right move to help save our environment. In recent years the cost of printing and posting the Voice has been increasing and we in the Secretariat decided that we can still serve the Cursillo Movement and our Cursillistas better by changing to an electronic format. Those who still want to receive the Voice by mail can still do so just by letting us know.

The plan for future distributions will be electronically as a PDF file that will be easily be accessible at the web site (www.cursillo.org/indy), at our FaceBook page (Central Indiana Cursillo Movement), and through your personal emails. Signing up for the Voice will be easy. Be looking for the Sign Up widgets/buttons at the web site and FaceBook page in the first of the year. Plenty of time to be in the data base to receive future issues of the Voice and other updates.

Lastly, I will welcome your comments and suggestions. You may want to share your Cursillo experience through the Voice, or you may wish to be part of the Voice's team, please email me at [email protected], subject line-Cursillo VOICE or give me a call and I will try my best to respond.

Thank You and God Bless to You All,

Molly Sanders, editor, Voice

The Voice will Go Green in 2013

We would like to

thank Ward Degler for the many

years of dedication to the

Secretariat. Christ is counting on

Us and we counted on Ward to

present and share the Curcillo

news. We truly appreciate the

service and commitment he has

made to our community over the

years. We are thankful to God

for the Gift of Ward and Jeannie

and we are thankful to Ward for

all his contributions. May God

continue to bless him and his

family!

Once again we had two wonderful weekends this fall! What a

blessing and many thanks to the team and the Cursillo

Community for all their efforts, God Bless you!

As we all know the weekend is the beginning and—continuation

of one’s walk with Christ. As with all friendships and

relationships it takes time and energy to truly be a disciple of

Jesus Christ and walk with Him, let alone bring someone else to

Christ.

This year our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has called all

Catholics to a Year of Faith, challenging us to renew an

authentic relationship with Jesus, not so much a challenge as a

sincere prayer for each one of us and to know and love Jesus.

Cursillo is a wonderful vehicle to continue and sustain us in our

walk with Jesus. As his mother Mary once said, “Do what he

tells you”.

Let us all continue to encourage and pray for one another as

together we nourish our relationship with Jesus and our Cursillo

community.

Dollar$ and $en$e

By Marty Van Der Burgt, Treasurer

W hat does it take to make Cursillo happen in Central and Southern Indiana? Would you believe almost $30,000? That’s right! It

surprised me too. As your new treasurer, I can assure you I have looked through the details of the past several years and the value is fairly

consistent. To meet this budget while keeping our weekend fees low, Cursillo relies on $10,000 of donations from our members

throughout the year to balance the budget. Unfortunately, in each of the past two years, we have not received this level of contribution

and, as such, have run about a $4000 per year deficit. At this rate, our beloved Cursillo will be broke in less than two years!

As a result of my due diligence and discussions with the past treasurer and other secretariat members, I have recommended to the

secretariat two immediate actions. First, we need to increase the application fee from $10 to $20 for candidates, and maintain the current

weekend fee of an additional $100 for the weekend. That is a total of $120 per candidate, and a modest increase from previous weekends.

Additionally, we will no longer be able to offer the team members a 50% discount on the weekend fee. So the team will also be asked to

contribute the full $100 for the weekend as well - same as the candidates. This will go a long way towards filling the “budget gap”, and

will keep Cursillo solvent for the immediate future. These changes will begin 2013.

Secondly, I would like to reach out to you. The Cursillo community has been so wonderful in supporting this movement with your time,

talent, and treasure. The movement continues to look toward the future with potential for Spanish Speaking Cursillo Weekends, Cursillo

de Cursillo, Disabled Outreach, Leaders’ School, and other activities as we move into the ‘Year of Faith’ and ‘Year of Evange lization’ in

2012 and 2013, and we need your continued financial support. I would like to encourage each of you to think of Cursillo in your annual

giving and in your charitable contributions. Make Cursillo a regular recipient of your stewardship. We mail this newsletter to over 2000

families - If everyone contributed just $5 per year to our organization we could meet our needs! And while no donation is too small, I

know that some of you can give more. Please know that Cursillo is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations over $250 will receive a

written acknowledgement for your tax purposes. Remember, Christ is counting on you!

Would you consider a gift to support Cursillo at one of the following levels?

in Cincinnati, Ohio, was a huge

success of sharing God’s gifts

of person and friendship. The

Encounter was attended by one

Cursillista from Alberta, Canada, and

over 400 Cursillistas from six languages

and numerous dioceses in the United

States. Dr. John Cuddeback, gave the keynote

address, “Being Present With Those We Love, The Joy

and the Challenge”. The hope and the love

communicated through his principle of “presence”

with persons as the heart of friendship and of

encounter with self, God, and others, rang true with

the Charism of the Cursillo Movement, that God loves

us! Subsequent talks by lay persons and clergy

focused on the 3rd Conversations of Cala Figuera.

We were also introduced, or reintroduced as the case

may be, to Spiritual Exercises based on St. Ignatius.

The entire Encounter was uplifting and enlightening.

As is tradition, a spirit-filled and joyful fiesta

celebration completed the Encounter with several

cultural groups performing songs that brought to

mind joy of diversity that is our Church.

A Visit from the NATIONAL Cursillo Center

On June 20, St. Monica's Parish, was visited by Ceferino "Cef" Aguillon, Jr., the English-speaking Coordinator to the National Cursillo Center. The Cursillo Movement in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the Diocese of Lafayette welcomed the visit from Aguillon as an opportunity to share our faith and some thoughts about the Cursillo Movement in regards to the Diocesan Secretariat, School of Leaders, Pre-Cursillo, Cursillo Weekend, and Post-Cursillo activities.

The afternoon agenda was a brief overview of the Purpose, Mentality, and Methodology defining each and explaining the three distinct phases of the Pre-Cursillo, Cursillo Weekend, and Post-Cursillo. Aguillon also expanded on the Weekend Messages ideas or lay rollos of Cursillo:

Ideal

Laity in the Church

Piety

Study

Action

Leaders

Study the Environment

Christianity in Action

Cursillista Beyond the Cursillo

Total Security

At the conclusion of Aguilllion's presentation he graciously answered questions from the many cursillistas that attended the event. Aguillon also encouraged reading the new book, "The Cursillo Movement - Study of the Charism", containing the writings of Eduardo Bonnin on the charism and an excellent study for School of Leaders or any cursillista interested in studying the charism of the Cursillo Movement.

Why study the charism? The Pontifical Council for the Laity at their 2nd World Congress of Ecclesial Movements in May 2006 asked all movements to study their charism and told them to go to their founder to know your charism – know his mentality, his life, and the history of the movement. Pope John Paul II in 1998 told all movements, “The founder is the pivot of the life of every movement, because he is the bearer of the original charism from which it is born and through which it lives.” They also stated WHY – because it is only when each movement LIVES its charism – THEN it is truly serving our Holy Mother Church.

Kindling the Fire

Rector Dale Funke

O n the first Cursillo #108 team formation meeting (August 9th),twenty-nine authentic and genuine Christian men came together with the true desire to praise, love and serve our awesome God. We were blessed to have Godly Catholic men from as far South as Bedford, to as far North as Peru. We were also blessed to have Fr. Mark Walter, a relatively new Cursillistia, from Our Lady of Mount Carmel as our Spiritual Director. Although this was his first team, Fr. Mark performed like a seasoned veteran.

We began all of our formation meetings lighting our team candle as a reminder that we are called to be Christ’s light; here to serve HIM and to do His will. It was very appropriate then that our theme for Men’s #108 was “Shine Your Light”. The basic ingredient to living out the great commission that we take on as Catholic Christians. For our Team Prayer we used the “Prayer of Abandonment”; which contains the line: ...for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands…. And so it was in that spirit that team #108 surrendered ourselves, and dedicated our eight weeks of formation, and the #108 weekend into the Lord’s hands.

The weekend was an awesome experience for the candidates and team alike. The 22 candidates came to the weekend open to receive the boundless Graces that would be showering on them. They fully

W hat a gift from God to be the rectora of the Women' s Cursillo 97. God blessed our team with a wonderful spiritual director, Fr Paul Landwerlen from St Vincent De Paul Shelbyville. He was a true servant of Christ. He offered Mass every week during our formation, what better way to bond, than in the body of Christ. He also offered the sacrament of reconciliation during our formation meetings. Our team was cleansed and refreshed entering into the weekend. We had beautiful music from our wonderful music cha Sr. Cathy Anne Lepore. To sing praise is to pray 10 times. We prayed, and prayed ! Our music was so uplifting, joy was placed in all of our hearts each time we sang. We shared wonderful food, great jokes, some tears and laughter, but most importantly we shared Christ body and blood each day. The candidates were so open and ready to be filled up when they entered the weekend. God had handpicked each team member, candidate and each speaker. The team and candidates were bonded together in Christ love from day one. Each day of the weekend you could feel the love grow and grow and by Sunday our hearts were overflowing. The palanca from all (the team and all of the communities ) was truly felt. There is only one explanation for the feeling of love felt by all and that is the power and prayer and sacrifice. Our God Reigns !! Thank you Jesus !! Bridgid Hughbanks

Weekend # 108

participated and engaged in table discussions, songs, prayers, and sacraments. It was a true joy to experience their transformation over the three and one half days as we all experienced our Lord’s bountiful love, and explored a deeper relationship with Him.

There were many highlights during our weekend, but two stood out for me. The first was the “Way of the Cross” on Friday, which was an audio-visual presentation using video clips from “The Passion of the Christ”. It was very powerful and touching, making the stations so very real. The second was the Saturday night Adoration service, as we all circled the Blessed Sacrament, surrounded with lighted candles. It was so special just being in God’s presence, listening for His voice, and lifting our fifty-one voices in praise to our awesome God.

In summary, the weekend came together beautifully. God chose a great team, chose the right candidates to be there, and sent the Holy Spirit down to “Shine His Light” on the men of Cursillo #108. And praise God too, for the tremendous support we received from our wonderful Cursillo Community around the world.

Why attend the Cursillo School of Leaders?

Over the past year, I’ve asked fellow Cursillistas why they don’t attend School of Leaders. Here are some of their replies: “I’ve heard it all!”, “I’ve been to the School of Leaders more than once, and heard all the talks, more times than I care to remember.”, “I don’t want to be a leader.” “I only went to School of Leaders so I could work team.” “I didn’t know Cursillo had a School of Leaders.”

The School of Leaders is not all about becoming leaders. Though we are all called by God to be leaders in our faith.

Here’s what our own Cursillista, Helen Otto said during her Study Talk at Women’s Cursillo #97: “But we may ask ourselves

how do I get to know God better, to know Christ so that my choices can be made through awareness and knowledge? One of the ways to do this is through study”.

Are you hungry to learn more about your Catholic faith? I am!

In January, 2012, the School of Leaders began our “traveling road show”. In order to reach more of our Cursillista population in Central Indiana, we came to you. We hosted School of Leader sessions at Holy Spirit Geist in Indianapolis, Our Lady of Greenwood in Greenwood , S t . Bartholomew’s in Columbus, St. Ann’s in Lafayette, All Saints in Logansport and Seton High School in Richmond.

We changed the format, restructured the

talks, invited interesting and inspiring speakers, and had some lively discussions. We’re now challenging you to check out the “new” School of Leaders and tell us what you think!

December’s School of Leaders features guest speaker, Monsignor Joseph Schaedel. He, too, will be sharing his thoughts on the Year of Faith. Other speakers will be Lynn Bower and Jack Fink. The December School of Leaders will be held on Saturday, December 1, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at St. Luke’s Parish in Indianapolis.

Stay tuned for a School of Leaders coming near you. Check the Indy Cursillo website for upcoming School of Leaders. Contact me if you would like to join the School of Leaders core team.

If you would like to help volunteer and further the Cursillo movement in your parish, please prayerfully consider being a parish coordinator. Here is the list of parishes without parish coordinators. A parish coordinator is the “point” person in their parish for Cursillo. If you are interested, I can forward to you the list of duties. Without volunteers to do this, Cursillo in the parish diminishes. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. God bless you all!
