Cosmonauts formed in 2009 after Derek Cowart met Alexander Ahmadi met at a space training program in Russia where they were prepping for a mission to bring beautiful music to Mars. Okay, that’s not actually true, but I like my version better than the real truth, which is that they were introduced by a mutual friend while outside a Hollywood Video in Fullerton, CA (See? Mine is better). The two teens were drawn together by a mutual love for bands like Spacemen3, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Velvet Underground, and decided to form a band after they both played individual acoustic covers (The Beatles for Cowart and Black Sabbath for Ahmadi) at a house party. “It was kind of like ‘Hey, I heard you like this type of music…’,” says Cowart. “Just staple sad bastard music.” And the name? As Cowart tells it: “I just liked how it rolled off the tongue. There’s a space connotation there… We felt kind of like weirdo aliens all the time, I guess.”

The two recruited bassist James Sanderson through their then drummer and played their first show as a full band at a Burger Records New Year’s Eve show that same year (thanks to their friends in neighboring band Audacity who brought them in to fill in for an act that dropped out last minute). The show led to a lasting relationship with Burger and its founders Lee Rickard and Sean Bohrman, who put out Cosmonuats first record via cassette tape the next year.

Burger also put the band on their first tour alongside bands like Cum Stain, Conspiracy of Owls, and Audacity. It wasn’t exactly luxurious. “Our guitars broke all the time and we fixed them with pieces of lighters and stuff. We didn’t have any money. We slept on a roof in New York, and in Colorado. In the car some places. We camped,” recalls Cowart. That didn’t stop them from continuing to tour throughout the next couple of years, with Ahmadi defacto placed in charge of booking their shows.

“It sucked. I wasn’t very good at it,” laughs Ahmadi. “We had just kind of accepted it, that we would work and save up money, then lose it all on tour. It’s just what we did, because we wanted to do it,” Cowart adds.

That attitude, the help of other bands like The Growlers who put them on their tours, and Ahmadi’s mom’s Ford Taurus all got them through four years of constant tours all over the United States (and later Europe) but it was their unique, noisy, psyched out, ambiguous take on pop music that built up their army of fans and have made them favorites of psych, punk, and garage lovers alike. The quartet (currently rounded out by their 10, yes 10th, a la Spinal Tap, drummer Grant C’debaca) has since put out three albums (all through Burger) and played alongside bands like Slowdive, Telescopes, Thee Oh Sees, and even one of their original unifying influences, Brian Jonestown Massacre, who handpicked them to open for their 2014 Orange County show.

Ask them about their sound and you’ll get a mixed bag of answers: “Earthy” “Angular” “Thick”. “I think Bruce Springsteen would like it.” As for where they see their band going? “To the top! We’ll see Bruce Springsteen there. And when we have money, to Medieval Times!” Cosmonauts are hard to classify: they incorporate elements of punk, psych, garage, and indie rock, turn it up real loud, and create a lush, beautiful, driving sound that is all their own. In that way they are perfect collaborators for Altamont, because they truly are cut from a different cloth.

When did you first hear about Jon?

Andrew: I think it was around the time

Figgy was getting on Baker. He was telling

us about his friend from Chicago who was

super gnarly, and just ripped. And I saw his

footage, and had more than a video part, just

8 full minutes of killing it, skating just

like he does now, really powerful and fast.

Even when he was young, it was the same. He

was just attacking everything. I showed Jim

and Erik, and I was like “man, we gotta get

this guy on Death Wish.” I learned from Tony

Hawk back then that you just take care of

your people with what you have available.

He was getting Emericas for a while, and

then we got him on Altamont when Altamont

started. He’s just a raw, raw skater.

For Altamont, talking about a raw dude

like that, he kind of embodies it…

Andrew: Altamont is pretty much based

around skateboarding first, being an

individual, being unique. Skateboarding is

unique; skateboarders look different, and

have a different kind of lifestyle. I’d

say that’s what everybody on the Altamont

team, and it’s a small team, is kind of

about. First just amazing skateboarders,

second just always looking cool.

Dickson is one of those guys who really just

always looks cool. It’s just the way he skates,

and his overalls, and his big sideburns. He’s

just cool, you know? He’s a quiet person who

just lets the skating do the talking. I’d say

he fits right into Altamont perfect. If I could

just have John Dickson in every Altamont ad from

this point on, I would do it. He’s that good.

Are you going to cop some of his overalls?

Andrew: There are certain people that have come

along. There are two different ways. You can

be like Ali Boulala, and put anything on and

make it look really effortless and cool. That’s

how Dickson is. He puts on his overalls, you

make nothing of it. It seems like he’s wearing

pants and a t-shirt. It just works for him. If

somebody else came up in some overalls, you’d be

like whoa, what are you trying to do right now?

The work of Liverpool–based artist Boneface is deeply steeped in the decade he came of age in: the bold, outrageous aesthetic of the 90s (think Beavis and Butthead, Tank Girl, Pokemon, and especially the comics of the time) informs his work, which features a mixture of original creations and pop culture references, all bloodied, beat-up, and a touch grotesque. The angst-inspired illustrator has also done animation work, creating a music video for the Queens of the Stone age song “…Like Clockwork” (as well as the accompanying album art). The band found him in a magazine and they were taken with his gripping, fierce illustration style. They’re not the only ones: Boneface’s unique take on the world around him speaks to Altamont’s own, making him an ideal collaborator for the brand.

Where do you currently reside?The barren wastelands of Liverpool, UK.

What was your first influence creatively?I guess it would be from reading comics when I was a kid. I used to pick up whatever my local post office had (usually X-Men or Spiderman) and try drawing the characters. I guess I still haven’t stopped drawing Superheroes and crap. Cartoons and movies were big influence too, Saturday mornings used to consist of Iron Man, Fantastic 4, The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman and X-Men cartoons. I used to love Stuff like Power Rangers and WWF too.

Can you talk a little about your process? Is it a combination of pen and ink, as well as digital coloring?I prefer to use good ol’ pen and paper, then scan that in and color it digitally. I’ve not worked out a way that I like coloring on paper yet, but I’d like to. Occasionally I’ll just draw digitally, usually because I think it’ll get the job done faster. Usually doesn’t work out that way though, as it just gives me the opportunity to focus more on details.

What themes are you fascinated by?I like the idea of people facing overwhelming odds, people who’ve been completely fucking destroyed by some force they’re trying to battle against, but they keep on fighting anyway, because they have nowhere else to go, and nothing to lose. On the flipside of that, I also like to show the bad guy victorious, because, let’s face it, that’s always more interesting. Obviously, I like to cover that in a sheen of monster masks and punks and motorbikes and stuff.

How do you approach commercial work differently than your personal work?I actually don’t try and approach them any differently. I wanna create stuff that I think is cool, that I wanna see. I’ll usually try and bend any brief to the breaking point if I think I’m gonna be stifled by it and it’ll end up as something I’m not proud of. You can’t always win with clients though, and some of ‘em are assholes. My best commercial work is when I’m given a basic idea or theme and left to run with it.

Were you familiar with the brand Altamont prior to this?I used to skate quite a bit (I sucked), so sure, I was familiar with Altamont. The project was just too rad to pass up. I’ve always been a fan of that ‘Neo-Tokyo’ vibe, so it was cool to bring some of those elements into my work.

What books or movies have you been into lately?This has been a super disappointing year for movies for me. The Robocop & Godzilla ‘reboots’ fucking sucked, and the recent Sin City sequel was just as bad. I’m not really big movie guy, and I don’t read that many books. Much prefer to sit down a play a good videogame.

Who are some of your artistic heroes?There are way too many to mention ‘em all, but Raymond Pettibon recently followed me on Twitter. That was pretty mind blowing.

Do you keep a sketchbook?I do, mainly just to take quick notes or quickly sketch out ideas or compositions if something springs to mind. I prefer to just jump straight into a piece though, rather than working out all the possibilities, or exactly how everything is going to look. I like to add little touches as I’m working; things seem to turn out better that way.

What do you think is most important to develop and grow as an artist? Also, how necessary is art school?I always used to say I was done with education when I finished with college (that’s at age 18 in the UK) but I ended up studying illustration in University somehow anyway. I think more than anything it teaches you how to think creatively, to come up with solutions to a piece you want to conceive that you might not have thought of. Also, how to work to a client brief, and not just for yourself. It’s a super helpful thing to do, but I don’t think it’s “necessary”.

As far as developing as an artist, I guess it’s always a good idea to try and change up what you’re doing, to try new things, even if people never see any of that stuff. Stagnating doing one thing, because that’s what’s worked in the past, or you think that’s what people expect from you, is a bad idea.
