Thank You to Last Years Sale Buyers
WelcomeWelcome to another edition of the Cutting Edge Bull
Sale. I think everyone would agree that 2009 was
another trying year for farming. With another calving
season done for some and starting for others,
believe it or not it’s bull buying time.
Every year our sale seems to change. We would
like to welcome back Blaine and Sandra Meyers
of Poplar Grove Red Angus and welcome new
contributors, Mark & Kathy Matejka of Matejka
Farms and Darryl and Brent Papuschak of Norell
Angus.
This year we will again be offering a good selection
of commercial breeding heifers. Allwest Farms and
Lockhart Valley Simmentals are selling good quality
heifers this year just to name a few.
The sale location is still the same, but the day and
time have changed. Make sure you mark your
calendar on Saturaday, March 6, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.
for another exciting Cutting Edge Bull Sale. Last
year the night sale was brutally cold, so hoping for
better weather, we decided to move it to a Saturday
afternoon sale and a week or so later.
Again we would like to thank all bidders and buyers
in advance for their support of our sale.
Good luck calving and we hope to see you sale day.
Please bring this
catalogue to the sale!

We would like to thank Dwight Homan

Hello and welcome to the 5th Annual Cutting
Edge Bull Sale. This year marks our 20th
Anniversary selling bulls. We would like to
thank all our past buyers, bidders and supporters
of our breeding program. Again this year we
have some big, soggy bulls from our proven
herd bull Jenkins. There is also a nice offering
from our senior red factor bull “Blue”. His calves
are proving to be growthy, docile, good testicle
development and with plenty of hair. Also you
will see a small sampling from our heifer bull
Bellringer 21T. We are also offering 9 really
good commercial heifers - all are red or red
blaze faced. We really think the cattle market is
going to turn and you should be prepared to take
advantage.
We hope to see you on sale day and as always
feel free to stop by the farm for a coffee and visit.
See you sale day.

What can be said about Jenkins that we haven’t already said. His heifers are real producers and his bulls speak for themselves. Even though Jenkins is now gone, his genetics will live on through his progeny. We have 3 powerful sons this year and they are good. Look them over carefully for they are all awesome bulls.

LHVS 69W is my favorite bull. I’ve always told Lee that 69W reminds me of Jenkins, almost a carbon copy. He takes after his sire in color, body type and disposition. I’ve had numerous conversations with Jason Bruketa (the breeder of JB Prada 51P) and there’s one thing we always end-up saying to one another . . . it is so hard to find a good Fullblood bull, whether he’s Full Fleck or percentage they are hard to find. Well if I were a breeder looking for a good bull, I’d definitely look at this boy. What more can you ask for, I don’t know. He’s got that moderate birthweight with explosive performance. He’s well balanced with good muscle to bone ratio. Combine that with his excellent temperament, testicle development and hoof structure I’d seriously look him over.

We purchased “Blue” as he is nicknamed, in partnership with Anchor D Ranch from Barry Labattes bull sale in 2007. Blue has really come into his own, developing into a moderate framed bull with short legs and big, big feet. He does have an impressive hoof structure. We really like his calves. He seems to put growth, along with hair coat, disposition, feet and legs and impressive testicle development on his calves. Blue has been used heavy over the last two years. He saved our butts when he turned two and A.I.ing became a nightmare. He bred cows up at Danny’s, came here and bred 25 - 30 cows in the worst spring conditions I’ve ever seen. Last spring he was again used heavily at Danny’s, here and then he went onto breed cows at a neighbors when his bull went down. He is dark red, hetero-polled bull all wrapped up in a very docile package. Look at his sons and really study them, I think you’ll like what you see.

This year we are offering two good young bulls form our proven heifer bull, LHVS Bellringer 21T. We helped one heifer last year and that calf was backwards. Birthweights averaged 80 lbs on heifer calves and 90 lbs on bulls. This year we haven’t seen a calf born yet. His calves in the feedlot are performing very well, they have good growth and performance. Bellringer marks his calves up very nicely with lots of pigment. He also puts a tremendous hair coat on them. These two calves are a fair representation of what he can do.

I said “No it’s the other way around.” 70R is a real producer but in a very neat and tidy small package. Her dam, LHVS 52M is a real cow maker. This is a cow family I like alot. Welcome to the Fifth Annual Bull Sale.
We wish to thank all our buyers and
bidders and supporters of the past
sales. This past year has been challenging to
say the least. However we are proud of the sale
offering. This group will offer both heifer and
performance bulls.
We are constantly trying to improve our
farm & the calves we raise. The cowherd is
something we are proud of. The traditional
Angus advantage is important around here,
easy calving, plenty of milk, natural mothering
ability, disposition, good hair, fertility, and feed
conversion, are features the breed boasts. We
certainly strive to improve our program so that
we can better serve our customers.
If any of us here can help answer questions,
don’t hesitate to call.
All roads lead to the Cutting Edge Bull Sale Saturday, March 6,
2010 in Rimbey. Please consider this your personal invitation to sale and lunch, see you
there!

270 is a heavily muscled heifer bull producer. He improves the leg structure and has a perfect shaped foot, wide and well set. His ability to maintain condition is an important trait. His daughters are uniform and eye appealing while they wean off very functional cattle, that go onto have an economic bonus on the farm.

are the result of this process. We strive
for quality not quantity, and hope you
see something you like. The dams we
have all have excellent udders, feet

It’s a pleasure to be participating in the Cutting Edge Bull Sale Group.
We have put together a strong group of bulls for this offering that
represents our program.
At Matejka Farms, we are very proud of our cow herd, 200 head of Black &
Red Angus as well as Herefords, only the good ones get to stay and they work
hard for us, they are the backbone of our business. We feel it is important
to have a low maintenance cowherd that can produce calves that weigh up
with minimal inputs and labour. Our bulls are on fed a high roughage and light
grain ration, they are kept in a large pen in large groups so they have lots of
room to move. You are welcome to stop by the farm an view any of the bulls
prior to sale day.
Just give us a call and we will be more than happy to show you around

A top prospect from birth. The first calf heifer did a great job, indexing 112 with this strong, deep and performance orientated bull. Sired by 6T, who has as good of pedigree as any, note the popular Smash grand sire, he is well respected world wide. Balanced numbers and moderate birth weight indicate Rocket 13W will have a great future.

Here is an own ET son of our top producing performance and maternal cow 310N, she as calves in several countries, and it seems no matter what we mate here with she raises our heaviest calf! Combined with the popular Smash sire will ensure moderate BW with lots of growth and capacity in all his progeny. We will be using a maternal brother this year, and he has had many astute cattlemen appraise him this fall, this guy has just as much potential.

If you are looking to add a few more pounds, and cover a few more cows, this is an outstanding prospect. We saved him as our spare bull for our herd, sired by our Advantage bull, who did a little show winning in his day, but more importantly, has sired great calves for ourselves and our partners, Big Sky Angus, Schuler, and Corner Creek Angus Edmonton. We were fortunate to have procession in Advantage this year, and didn’t need the to use Addition 51U, but we would not have hesitated! Dam’s side is a moderate and totally functional cow, who’s influence we would love to incorporate into the herd. This is a meat machine! Jan 4 weigh t- 2070 lbs.
Boy, when we start looking for low birth weight, length of body and attractive package, we should think of 18U. His sire is a low BW AI sire, who is gaining popularity due to his positive progeny and maternal strength! Even the dam has moderation built in to her, she did a nice job on 18U as a heifer, and has another good heifer calf in the replacement pen. Hard to find a negative BW with positive growth and maternal, in a neat tidy package. Jan 4 weight - 1870 lbs.

Guidelines for Management & Care of Yearling Bulls
FEEDING: Your yearling bull still has a lot of growing to do. Feed the young bull well. You should geed 5 - 10 lbs of grain in addition to a full feed of good quality had or silage from now until the start of breeding season. Recondition your bull after the breeding season to allow them to mature to their genetic capabilities. This is a very critical age as they start losing their teeth at 18 - 24 months. A young bull consequently eats slower and cannot utilize as rough a feed, or compete for feed, as one with permanent teeth. Research indicates that a bull’s usefulness as a 2 year old can be retarded if not properly reconditioned after use as a yearling.
BREEDING SEASON: Don’t expect a young bull to compete with older bulls, or horned bulls. If intimidated by an older bull, he won’t breed effectively. A young bull, if handled properly and not dominated by other bulls, should service 20 - 25 females his first season. Size of the pasture and terrain also influence this. Limit the breeding season to no more than 60 days on a yearling bull. If you can’t limit the season, consider rotation to give him a rest. Watch a young bull early in the season to detect any physical problems. A virgin bull can have inadequacies undetectable except through observation.
HEALTH: Maintain a good general health program, salt, mineral, and fly control. Worming can make a significant difference as well as grub & louse control problem.
