    In 2005, there were a total of 87 seropositivecases in the region, an increase of 4 cases from83 reported cases in 2004.

    Of the 87 reported cases, 32 were confirmed asAIDS cases.

    The cities of Cebu, Lapu-lapu and Mandauehave STD surveillance systems within theirhealth offices that monitor and evaluate thecases of sexually-transmitted diseases in theirareas.

    Affordable Essential Drugs

    In 2005, 4 LGU-based hospitals in Oriental Negros and 6government-retained hospitals in the region, namely:

    VSMMC, Eversely Sanitarium,Talisay District Hospital, St.Anthony Mother & Child Hospital, Gov. CelestinoGallares Memorial Hospital and Don Emilio del ValleHospital supported the PDI scheme

    Their pharmacies, know as Botika ng Masa, sold 11 typesof frequently bought medicines such as the anti-

    hypertensives, anti-diabetic, bronchodilators, availableto the masses at a lower cost.

    The Botika ng Barangays made available 26 types oflocally procured over-the-counter and householdremedies like pain relievers, analgesics and

    multivitamins, cotrimoxazole and amoxicillin.

    MDG Localization

    Local Government Units (LGUs) have significant roles toplay in the realization of the MDGs. The achievement ofthe MDG targets for most part relies on the delivery ofdevolved basic services.

    In the region, D

    ILG together with PopCom and NED

    Aconducted orientation activities on MDG localization to

    the different agencies and LGUs.

    LGUs were also provided technical assistance indeveloping strategies that contribute to theachievement of the MDG targets.

    Poverty mapping activities conducted by LGUs with theassistance of NGOs were implemented by OrientalNegros, Cebu City and Bohol.
