Profile: Mr. Zane Barnard
I served my apprenticeship with Moolmans and qualified as a heavy Earthmoving
Diesel Mechanic in 2002. I continued to work for Moolmans as a shift Mechanic, doing
running repairs and breakdowns. I was moved over to day shift and received my own
fleet of machines. My objective was to ensure my entire fleet achieved a minimum of
85% availability, I am proud to say this objective was achieved and maintained! I was
then offered the opportunity as Quality controller to take over the fleet maintenance
of all the tyre related plant and in turn managing all the scheduled services, oil
samples and ensuring all services and repairs were done to OEM standards. With a
strong team and efficient management objective, this was achieved. Unfortunately
the closing of the site meant that a change had to be made.
I started at Deutz Diesel Power in Rustenburg as a Field Service Technician in late 2005
and received specialized training in their product range. At that stage Europe had
already implemented their emissions laws and advanced changes were introduced to
their product line. Unfortunately I had a dispute over my contract with Deutz, leading
to my resignation. The knowledge and experience gained in the short time I was there,
was however most beneficial to my
career.
In mid-2006 I started at Rainbow Builder Suppliers as Workshop Manager. My
objective was to run all parts of the workshop and ensure that all 67 pieces of plant
were maintained and available, to keep up with a busy daily production schedule. I
introduced a fleet maintenance management system which in turn reduced
breakdowns, plant down time and overheads. I had to coordinate weekly and
monthly service and maintenance planning which worked hand in hand with
production.
In 2007 I started at Komatsu Remanufacture Centre as a Transmission Assembler. I
have built transmissions, axles, differentials and spindles across their product range,
including their largest Front End Loader the WA 1200-3 transmission. I have gained a
wealth of knowledge and experience in the time spent working on their product.
3
After 2 years at Komatsu Reman I was promoted into the position of Power train
inspector/Technical Analyst. I was responsible for inspections, quoting and
failure report writing for the power train section.
As an Inspector, I worked closely with customers and vendors, ensuring that the
primary point of failures were identified and addressed in the most cost effective
manner possible. I believe I earned the respect of many of our valuable customers
due to my professionalism and strong technical expertise in the earth moving
field.
In 2010 I was promoted to Technical training. I was given the responsibility of
running with the Hands On Training Program. Being a new program, I took charge
and planned and lead all aspects of the program. Initially I designed and developed
the Needs Analysis Assessments, which helped me grade our artisans and highlight
areas of concern. From the information gathered from the needs analysis, I
developed Hands On Training Courses which were graded at different levels,
dependent on the outcomes.
In 2012 I moved over to the Product Training division where I conducted KomatsuProduct- specific technical training courses. These courses are designed for our valued customers, and offer in- depth technical, maintenance and diagnostics training on the Komatsu product range.
Currently I am a senior Technical Product Trainer. I also assist the National
Services Team with any issues related to the Komatsu product, this includes fault
finding, machine diagnostics, determining the root cause of failure and correcting
the problem efficiently and cost effectively. Being a product specialist on both
Caterpillar and Komatsu I work hand in hand with the Marketing and Sales teams,
I assist with new product launches, sales training and competitor comparisons.
I consider myself to be a dedicated and driven individual who has a lot more to
offer within the earthmoving industry. Having developed a strong and well-
rounded technical foundation and having gained valuable experience in all fields
of the earthmoving industry, I believe that I have the expertise, confidence and
interpersonal skills to further my career in a line of Management, Technical
support and Marketing.
