President’s Report...A welcome to all our new members! CVCA has been busy! The Novice Clinic, Bennett Drive, Larry Poulin Clinic, Summer Picnic and most
recently, the Combined Driving Clinic were all a success. Many CVCA members showed at the Lorenzo Driv-ing Competition. Congratulations! We certainly are a diversified group! Come autumn, we have two beautiful
scenic drives to look forward to with or without a horse to ride or drive. Of course, there is always good food to
follow. Please come along and enjoy! Everyone is welcome.
Now on a more serious note, the Board has been contemplating several issues. We have many new
members who joined CVCA as part of our clinics. For insurance purposes, everyone who participates or audits the events must become a member. Our insurance agent is very accommodating; however, almost every event
must have a separate “rider” above the basic policy. Compared to other horse related clubs we should be
pleased with our rates. Our website is an ongoing expense, but CVCA needs to be connected with today’s world.
CVCA should not be isolated from today’s technology and forms of communication.
CVCA has traditionally sponsored the Ladies, Gentleman’s and Jr. Whip/Youth Championships at
Lorenzo’s Driving Competition, and we advertise in the Walnut Hill Driving Competition program. A continual
list of expenses includes printing, postage and food at our events. None of our board members gets reimbursed
for their printing expenses. Merchandise inventory is a big chunk of our total budget as it binds up the money
until merchandise is sold.
With all this in perspective, the Board unanimously voted to raise dues as follows: Singles: $25. , Fam-
ily: $35. , Student: $10. Hopefully, you will understand and continue to support CVCA as we expand to include
more events on a monthly basis and therefore more FUN!
The donation jar and the 50/50 Raffle are other small ways that we can raise money to fund our activi-ties. The Silent Auction has always been our only fundraiser. The reality is that it no longer raises the amount
of money that it once did. The income generated in the last few years has decreased as expenses have risen.
Sound familiar? Without “breaking the bank”, we can all contribute a little more in small ways. This is a great
club! It is a friendly way for new whips to safely get a start and experienced whips to increase their knowledge.
There are also other drives or areas to explore with the understanding/acceptance that we may have to charge
for it to be included in our Calendar of Events.
Thank you all for reading this. I want the best for CVCA… now and in the future. Any suggestions that
you might have for upcoming fundraisers, PLEASE let me know. ~Sandi Patrizio CVCA President
CVCA SUMMER PICNIC:
The summer picnic was a new “event” on the club’s event calendar this year. The picnic was held on Sunday,
July 29, at the home of CVCA president, Sandi Patrizio. Thanks Sandi! Another successful event. 32 members
and family attended. All enjoyed grilled meats and a variety of delicious foods.

Combined Driving Clinic a Success
It was perfect conditions for the second ‘Introduction to combined driving’ clinic held August 25-26 at Freshwind Farm in Eaton, NY. Jillian Gemmell coached the three participants, (Carol Ilacqua with Buddy, Hans Neudel with Bill, and Jackie Gagen with Ollie) who each had something different they wanted to accomplish. The clinics many auditors were able to ask detailed questions and see the im-provements the participants made, and the improvements they could make with their own horses. On Saturday the focus was on driving a full cones course with both speed and accuracy. By the end of their sessions, the drivers were going clean (no cones down), smooth, and finishing with great times. On Sunday the drivers were challenged with two different driving hazards (or obstacles) where not only speed plays a major role, but communication with your horse. The smiles and laughter coming from the drivers left everyone happy at the close of the clinic. Jillian would like to thank our participants, auditors, and of course Freshwind Farm for letting Jillian host the clinic at their great facility. See you next year!
LARRY POULIN CLINIC WRAP-UP: Submitted by: Judy Sobczak
The CVCA sponsored Larry Poulin Clinic held on June 30/July 1 was by all accounts a success! There were a total of 20 lesson spots available for the weekend. There were 10 lesson spots each day. All lesson spots were taken!
Along with the individuals who took lessons, there were at least 10 people auditing the clinic. I do believe that the
club even gained a few new members! I would think that means a successful clinic! A waiting list needed to be gen-
erated due to the demand. All who attended learned by watching, listening and doing. After Saturdays lessons were
finished, a wonderful dish to pass dinner was enjoyed by all. After dinner, Larry made comments about the days
lessons. Following his comments, a video of Larry’s winning dressage test held at the Kentucky Classic CDE in 2009, was shown. A question and answer period followed.
The response to the clinic and to Larry Poulin has been tremendous. Many participants of this year’s clinic are eager
for Larry to return next year. Membership, what are your thoughts? Please feel free to contact any officer or board
member with your thoughts or opinions. Remember, this is YOUR club. Let’s be an active club!
Special thanks go out to the following individuals for their hard work making this clinic the success that it was:
Sandi Patrizio, for arranging/organizing the clinic. Crystal Gemmell, for organizing the lunches. Jillian Sheehan of
Freshwind Farm and Jillian Gemmell of Mountain Thyme Training for sponsoring breakfast both days. Cazenovia
area businesses for sponsorships: Rite Aid, Kinney Drugs, Tops, Cazenovia Pizza and Subway. Thanks to all the
CVCA members who volunteered their time to help the clinic run smoothly. And, finally, to Morrisville Equine Re-
Driven dressage show hopes to return
On Saturday, July 28th, CVCA member, Carol Gut-
liph, hosted a driven dressage show at her beautiful
farm , Windswept Acres, in DeLancey, NY. Along
with Carol, CVCA members, Hans Neudel with
Bill, Tom Frechette with Bearnie and JoAnne Fre-
chette with Barbie competed in Training Level Test
3 and Preliminary Test 2. This was a perfect oppor-
tunity to test the skills learned earlier this summer at
the Larry Poulin clinic.
CVCA Charter Member, Anne Warner was the
judge for the show. Following the show, Anne took
time with each one of the participants to discuss her
comments. She pointed out the positives and was
extremely helpful in making suggestions in areas
where improvements are needed.
Carol mentioned that she would be hosting a driven
dressage show again July 2013. For more informa-
tion, please contact Carol.
