Two big projects help CWFE finish out a successful year! With projects in Nigeria and Nepal, Clean Water for Everyone (CWFE) has focused on a theme of clean water, sanitation, and education. At Bonjeh Schools in Nigeria, a new installed water system, new toilets, and renovated bathrooms were part of our efforts. In Mustang, Nepal, a water infrastructure was created to provide clean water to residents.

History & PhilosophyCWFE Organization Profile

Clean Water for Everyone (CWFE) began in 2010 as a project at University of Minnesota, Crookston. Its scope has extended beyond simply fulfilling the triple bottom line of “people, planet, and profit.” In the years since its inception, the CWFE team has provided clean water for countries such as Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nepal, Nigeria, and other areas where access to this necessity is indeed a luxury.

Founder Abbey Wemimo can attest to the tragedies that afflict families and individuals in developing countries who, by no fault of their own, cannot gain ready access to a clean water source. He remembers his middle school boarding house toilet plagued with maggots and inadequate access to clean water. Thus, out of a genuine passion to help these families, the CWFE team and its donors provide the funding and outside effort needed to make access to clean water a possibility in developing countries.

PhilosophyThe Clean Water for Everyone philosophy is two-fold: agency and human development. Lack of access to clean water directly causes widespread disease and death due to waterborne illnesses. The CWFE team believes that the local population knows what they need and simply need the resources to reach their goals. Our organization is dedicated to forming partnerships with local people and organizations and, with the help of our donors, providing the funding and outside resources needed to make access to clean water an affordable reality for everyone. We believe in empowering the local people, from the workers to students, to help themselves, and that our presence

in the community should be a contribution and not the focal point of clean water projects.

The second part of our philosophy is ensuring human development. Access to clean water is foundational for socio-economic growth. Once access to basic necessities such as clean water is provided, people are freed from the constraints of disease, and have more time, better health, and better opportunity to contribute to the growth of themselves and their communities.

Our Approachto clean waterSustainable practices

The plethora of our projects will be implemented in schools and educational institutions. Doing so, this model allows a suitable atmosphere for education and also ensures maintenance and sustainability of the infrastructure provided. The CWFE team also understands one size does not fit all, hence we will foster mutually beneficial partnerships

with communities of choice by requesting they contribute 20-40% to projects. Doing so, we provide a reciprocal relationship that allows them to have a voice in the projects.

Economic

In an effort to be accountable, we plan to gauge our impact on communities using a unique rubric that measures social, economic, and environmental effects our proposed project could have in the community. The CWFE team understands there are other factors involved, but we elect to use this rubric to help describe in detail our project impact and evaluation.

our agentsWe use unique project management and networking methods to execute our mission around the world. We employ a volunteer system called “Water Agents” that allows a participatory role for those interested in getting involved. Water Agents are non-paid volunteers and members of the CWFE

community that contribute financially to projects, help with project implementation, and assist with the administrative efforts for the CWFE team.

Local CollaborationThe CWFE team prides itself on forming part-nerships with the communities we propose to implement projects. We avoid at all costs the ethnocentric problem-solving ideology that often plagues international projects. Instead, we work with partner organizations to suggest sustainable methods to tackle the clean water and sanitation crises they feel their communi-ties are facing.

Education & SustainabilityThe majority of our projects will be implement-ed in schools, which encourages an oppor-tunity for communities with little or no access to water to send their children to school. A range of 20-40% of the project budget will be requested from the educational institutions we work with to provide scholarships for students in need and have strong academic abilities, community service, and a demonstrated pas-sion to impact lives.

SchoolsThe CWFE team understands the water and sanitation crisis cannot be solved by a central organization with a “one size fits all” principle. We recognize the power and importance of student contributions to solve this problem. We strongly believe students around the world can develop innovative, collaborative, and sus-tainable problem solving methods to tackle the issues with clean water and sanitation that affect their communities and other communi-ties about which they care.

2013Summer WorkProjects overview

In May, Clean Water for Everyone (CWFE) completed the project in Nigeria. The site chosen for a clean water project was Bonjeh Schools situated in Okokomaiko (PPL) Ojo Local Government Area in Lagos, Nigeria.

This particular project focused on three key areas: clean water, sanitation, and education.

First, a 1,600 gallon water system was installed that now provides clean water access to over 1,000 students in the school with another 15,500 residents living in the surrounding community. Second, three toilet facilities were renovated and two more were built to eradicate the culture of dangerous bacteria from forming and polluting the water facilities. And lastly, CWFE negotiated a one-year scholarship for 30 students in Bonjeh Schools to help

foster a long-term reciprocal relationship between both parties while benefiting youth in the school.

The successful completion of this project lead to social, economic, and environmental impacts. Clean water, education, sanitation, and less disease defined the social impacts. 22 short term jobs were created and equipment purchases in Nigeria describe the economic impact. Environmentally, the local habitats were left unharmed by the project.

Clean Water for Everyone not only provided students of Bonjeh Schools access to clean water, but also rendered proper sanitation installations, an education scholarship to deserving students and fostered a lasting connection with the school. This project’s mission would not have been a possibility without the boundless support of the University of Minnesota, Crookston Enactus team, the Crookston community and generous donations from people across the United States.

In Mustang, Nepal, clean water infrastructure was installed for 3,060 residents. Broken and leaking water pipes plagued the communities clean water supplies.

These were replaced with higher quality, mor durable pipes that will last much longer. Tremendous efforts went into the digging and laying the water pipeline to transport the clean, natural spring water from the mountainous river to the village below.
