College scholar- ships are available to any high school student from Amherst or Mont Vernon, NH, regardless of school attended, including home-schooled students. Historical Society Scholarship Applications Available The Historical Society of Amherst is seeking high school seniors who have an interest and aptitude in history to apply for its annual scholarship. Ap- plicants must be Amherst residents and graduating high school seniors who will be enrolling in a post- secondary school to pursue a major in history or a related field. Thanks to the success of fundraising events including the Antiques on the Green, we are able to offer a $1500 scholarship to a deserving applicant. Application forms are available online at www. hsanh.org. Forms will also be available at local high school student services offices. AMHERST - Neighbor- Works Greater Manches- ter has received approvals and secured funding for the construction of the Hidden Pond Apartments, an af- fordable housing develop- ment in Amherst. Located on Amherst Street at the edge of the historic district, the Hidden Pond Apart- ments will consist of 28 townhouse style apartments on 14 acres of land. e 28 units will be clustered in five buildings. While de- signed as town homes, the exterior of the buildings has been designed to mimic the historic nature of existing buildings in town, which date back to the early-mid 1800’s and are classified as Colonial, Federalist and Greek Revival. Hidden Pond Apart- ments will help answer a need for affordable family rental housing in Amherst where rental property pri- marily consists of single- family homes. Rents at the Hidden Pond Apartments will range from $875 per month to $980 per month, with heat and hot water in- cluded. Construction is expect- ed to begin by late spring and units will be ready for move-in by early 2013. e project architect is BMA Architects of Amherst. AMHERST - March be- gins a new programming series at the Amherst Town Library entitled It’s a Mys- tery to Me. Forensic scien- tist Paul Zambella will start off this series on Tuesday, March 13th from 7 to 8:30 PM with a presentation, “Forensic Science Road- show.” Venture into the world of CSI with this in- teractive program that in- troduces you to the world of forensic science. Learn about the history of foren- sic science, functions of a forensic scientist, gunshot residue, metal detector, footwear impressions, fin- gerprints, DNA, blood, and crime lights. Presenter Paul Zambel- la (Ret.) was employed as a Forensic Scientist at the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory for 36 years. His functions in the laboratory included crime scene investigator, criminal- ist, drug analyst, serologist and toxicologist. He par- ticipated in more than 450 crime scene investigations, examined tens of thousands of physical evidence items and testified in more than 350 criminal trials. Paul has taught courses in Foren- sic Science at Northeastern University and Salem State University. He has also lec- tured at Suffolk University and to various law enforce- ment institutions includ- ing the Massachusetts State Police Academy, the North- east Regional Police Insti- tute and the Massachusetts District Attorneys Associa- tion (MDAA). You are invited to join us for this presentation and the rest of the It’s a Mystery to Me programs at the Am- herst Town Library: “Take the Mystery Out of Glu- ten Free Cooking and Do Some Detective Work on Other Food Allergies” on Tuesday, March 20th from 6:30 to 8:30 PM; “Raising Heritage Chickens in Your Backyard” on Wednesday, March 21st from 7:00 to 8:30 PM; and, “Crime in Lit- erature: Exploring Mystery and Detective Fiction” on Tuesday, March 27th from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. is presentation is free and open to the public. However, registration is RE- QUIRED for this program due to space limitations. You can register for one or all of the It’s a Mystery to Me series programs for adults by calling 673-2288, emailing library@amherst. lib.nh.us or by visiting our website at www.amherst.lib. nh.us and selecting “Calen- dar of Events.” March Exhibit Features Paintings by Charles Kirk Mooradian Amherst Town Library Charles was born and raised in Arlington Massa- chusetts and graduated from the New England School of Art where he studied water- colors with Don Stone. He then pursued a career as a graphic designer and art di- rector for the next 35 years, designing graphics and il- lustrating all types of sub- jects for various advertising agencies and corporations. Now that he is painting full time Charles uses gouache in a realistic technique and watercolor in a more loose approach, getting much of his inspiration from the many vistas and wildlife that New England has to offer. He takes photos and uses an extensive reference file for his subjects, while painting the final work in the more controlled sur- roundings of his studio. Currently Charles resides with his wife Sandy in Nash- ua where he also maintains his studio. Charles will be exhibiting his work at the Amherst Town Library dur- ing the month of March. Reflections Deer CONCORD - Senate President Peter Bragdon was named the 2012 Legisla- tor of the Year by the Retail Merchants Association of New Hampshire. AMHERST - Ashley Hughes Swanson of Amherst wins Best Actress at the New Hampshire Theatre Awards for her role in the Amherst PTA’s production last year of The Music Man.

Ashley comments, “This award was so special to me because there is truly nothing better than to combine two things I love so much...
