WHAT IS A PLANET?Planet characteristics:

• Orbits the sun

• Roundish shape

• Not a moon

• Has cleared the neighborhood

around its orbit

SOLAR SYSTEM

• Formed 4.6 billion years ago

• Orion Arm of the Milky way galaxy

• Space crafts land on many of the planets to help us understand and learn about the solar system

• Has 8 planets, not including the sun

• Many dwarf planets

• Comets

• Asteroids

• And much more

THE SUN

• Considered a Star

• No solid surface92.1% Hydrogen, 7.8% helium

• Center of the Solar System

• Orbited by 8 planets, 5 dwarf planets, many asteroids, trillions of comets and icy bodies

• No rings

• No life on Earth without the Sun

• 27 million degrees Fahrenheit

EARTH• Earth means ground

• Third from the sun

• 24 hours in a day

• 365 days to orbit the sun

• Rocky planet

• Ocean planet - 70% is water

• 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen and 1 % other

• Only Breathable planet

• One moon

• No rings

• Perfect place to live

• Atmosphere protects us from incoming meteoroids

• Four season due to rotation and tilted axis

• Rotates on its axis

• Revolves around the sun while it rotates on its axis

DWARF PLANETS

• Days and years very

• Solid, rocky and/or icy bodies

• No known rings

• Most have moons

• No known life

• Pluto is now considered a Dwarf planet as of 2006

• Not considered a moon

• Barely a round shape

• 2 moons – Phobos and Deimos

• No rings

• Cannot support life

• Almost same size as Earth

• Second closest to the Sun

• Temperature of 900 degrees Fahrenheit

• Cannot support life

• Named after the most important deity in both greek and roman

• Fifth planet

• Hydrogen, helium

• 50 known moons, 17 awaiting confirmation

• Faint ring

• Cannot support life, but has oceans under crusts that might support life

• Great Red Spot – Gigantic storm
