1. Welcome
Analysis of match ups:
While Sewergate threatened to ruin home matches, the final round ended up a cracker with all teams
having a great last match of season 2012, and no brown logs to boot!!!
As happened last year, I have run the numbers over the clubs performance against our fellow southern
rivals except for Woodbridge (and teams we play rarely) which has already been reported. We
performed fantastically when the results are reviewed as follows:
Club Played Won Lost Drew For Against
Kingborough Lions 25 13 9 3 79 47
St Aloysius 16 9 6 1 69 41
Margate 13 12 0 1 62 15Calvin 14 12 2 0 60 15
Based on the above, our official bunnies are Margate, who tasted only one draw from 13 games.
Close behind was Calvin and while games against both Kingborough and St Aloysius proved
competitive, we nudged the overall contest. It is no luck that we continue to do well against the other
large southern clubs. All coaches should be congratulated on the effort they put in each week. The
results show that training regimes are spot on.
A reminder again that the clubs END OF SEASON GALA & TROPHY DAY is scheduled for SaturdayOctober 12th.
This week Played 10 Won 7 Lost 3 Draw 0 For 32 Against 20
This season Played 157 Won 87 (55%) Lost 55 Draw 14 For 556 Against 340
Above is only for Juniors
We hope you as parents and the players have all enjoyed their season. We hope to see you
at the Gala Trophy day and also for season 2013.
Till next season

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER for the hardcore enthusiasts
Most bizarre soccer stories of all time (Part 1)
All Fogged up
Arsenal played a friendly against Dynamo Moscow in heavy fog in 1945 at White HartLane and despite the urging of players to suspend play due to the fog, the referee
decided that play should continue.
The fog was so thick that the game turned into an absolute farce, with both sides
playing by their own set of rules and suffering their own bad luck because of the
inclement weather.
Moscow at one point made a substitution but didn't take a player off, with fans
watching the match believing that the Russian club had up to 15 players on the pitch
at the one time.
Arsenal also made the best of the conditions, with one of their playerswho had
earlier been sent offsneaking back onto the pitch and playing the remainder of the
game.
However, they did suffer some bad luck, with their goalkeeper knocking himself out
cold after running into the goalpost, which of course, he could not see due to the
fog. A spectator reportedly took his place in goals and the match continued.
Give me that Vegetable
Not too many of the stories to feature on this list take place in the past decade or so, but we
have a special place here for the faithful fans at Stamford Bridge, home ground of Chelsea.
You might not know it about the West London club, but Chelsea fans have been bringing
celery to the Bridge for decades nowmost likely in order to pay homage to their chant
"Celery" (warning: inappropriate language).
However, according to a club statement from 2007, the Blues have reminded fans that
bringing celery to the ground is in fact outlawed and that any fan caught bringing the
"dangerous" vegetable to the ground could face a lifetime ban from the Blues' home ground.
Here's the story via The Guardian, with the statement from the club below:
The throwing of anything at a football match, including celery, is a criminal offence for which you can be arrested and
end up with a criminal record.
In future, if anyone is found attempting to bring celery into Stamford Bridge they could be refused entry and anyone
caught throwing celery will face a ban.
The statement then goes on to direct fans to a hotline they could call to report others seen
carrying celery, promising that "all calls will be treated in confidence."

Perhaps we just call it a draw
Postponed matches in the English Premier League and FA Cup aren't that unusual,
but consider for a moment just how many times the match between Lincoln City and
Coventry City was postponed because of a bad winter in the season of 1962/63.
Due to play each other on January 5, 1963, the fixture between Lincoln and Coventrywas called off to inclement weather and scheduled for a few days time.
Then it was called off again. And again. And again.
The fixture was called off a total of 15 times before a match was finally played
chalking up 66 days between the start of the "round" and the end of the "round."
Coventry City eventually beat Lincoln City 5-1 on March 6.
Somebody has to miss soon
Your knowledge about Fourth Division Argentinian soccer might not be as high as
some other leagues in the world, so why don't we take a look back through the
history alumnus of the South American nation.
We'll stop in the 2009/10 season where we find a match between Juventud Alianza
and General Paz Juniors in the qualifying round of the Apertura for the Ronda Final at
the end of the season.
Can't quite remember what happened? Quite OK.
After tying their two legs on a 3-3 aggregate, the two clubs headed to penalty
shootout to decide who would progress through to the next round of competition.
Pretty normal still.
What would transpire is the highest score ever recorded in a penalty shootoutwith
Juniors winning on the night 21-20 in the penalty shootout.
Perhaps even more amazing than that is the fact that there was only one missed
penaltythe final penalty for Alainza by Ruiz, who had his penalty saved by thegoalkeeper. Up until that point, all 40 penalty attempts had been scored by the
penalty-takers.
Heartbreaking for Juventud Alianza goalkeeper Gonzalez, who failed to stop any of
the21 penalties that he had come his way throughout the shootout.
Part Two will follow in Season 2014!!!!

COACHES BOX
U14 Team Report Card:Well the end of the clubs first season in FFT Youth has finally arrived. As
expected weve faced some quality teams and some very good players. We
also faced some bloody big players we certainly didnt win matches due to
our physical attributes and our ability to out muscle opponents. Ok, we were inthe bottom division and we ended up firmly entrenched in the bottom half but
there were certainly many more positives than negatives. Though we lost more than we won
we were still able to chalk up six wins and two draws. On a good day we are a match for any
team in our division. We specialize in lightning fast counter attacks and indeed in recent
matches, when weve been struggling to get a team on the park due to illness and injury,
weve mastered the art of scoring an early goal. Performances have trended upwards and
certainly our passing game has improved. Weve learned though that Youths are more prone
to injury than juniors and certainly youths dont always bounce back more quickly from illness.
Best of all weve given the opportunity to local kids to play football for our local team on a
weekly basis even though its meant training and playing our home matches 16km away at
Huonville. At the beginning of the season we set ourselves some objectives. How did we do?
1. Hard Work:
George: Work in progress some improvement but certainly there were teams fitter than us.
Training only once a week probably put us at a disadvantage at this level.
Dave: At times was missing amongst some kids but greatly improved over the season duringtraining. During game time they all fired up and did their best
2. Team Work:
George: Nice bunch of kids great bunch of mates. They generally at least try to play for
each other. Were pretty much a group of social footballers and I wouldnt have it any other
way.
Dave: as per George
3. Fun:
George: Judging by attendance at training and matches I think we all had some fun. Was
more fun than some of the possible alternatives for a Thursday evening or Saturday
morning/afternoon during the winter and healthier to boot.
Dave: Fun was really the main focus initially for me with this team. Without a youth team most
of the kids/budding young adults would not have been playing soccer so getting the youth
team going was really about a fun sporting alternative during winter. I hope the guys had fun
(except when George and I were yelling from the sidelines!!! Vincent get back, Rowan help
out in defence!!!)
4. Skill:
George: Has certainly improved since summer social soccer but its a lifetime pursuit. At least
three referees commented on our individual and collective skills.

Dave: Great improvement, at the first training session I was worried, after the 2 nd even more
so. And when we lost 0-7 against Glenorchy in the first game I doubted the concept of aYouth team against big clubs. But man did the kids improve. With some careful positioning of
players, drills they liked and drills they didnt, the guys really picked up on some tactical
aspects of the game and passing was starting to work by the end of season. We just need
someone with a big boot.
5. Speed:
George: Lightning fast on the counter. Not as fast tracking back. Our counters though were a
joy to watch.
Dave: Out speedier players were suffering osgoods schlatters disease all season but still
scored over 35 goals. We did lack some speed across the field. I honestly think the difference
between our 6th (maybe it was 5th) position on the ladder and 3rd was one fast centre back.
6. Intensity:
George: Improvement opportunity is to work harder when we dont have the ball. TheSunday stroll still a regular phenomenon on match days!!.
Dave: Cant fault Georges comment above.
7. Formation:
George: Things improved for us after we restricted Isaacs contribution solely to the attacking
half of the field. We tried a number of different formations and switched most of our players
through different positions with some positive results that surprised us. Dave and I worked up
game plans most weeks over countless lunches and coffees and without fail we got it right!!
Unfortunately sometimes your opponent refuses to follow your game plan for them!! We canthelp that!!
Dave: Again the difference was 1 fast talkative centre defender. Our best formation endedup being 3 (defence) 1 Defense midfielder 4 across central midfield 1 attack midfield and 1
striker. There were times that I wondered after my 3 rd coffee whether George was going
overboard with 4, but in the end it was good to see most guys start to learn the differences
between some positions. The old Anglo way of a kid learning one position all thru Juniors and
youth is why the Germans, Spanish, South Americans are so much better. I strongly believe
that a player is more rounded tactically if they have learnt a number of positions by their later
teens. Interesting thoughts on this are here http://soccerthought.com/player-development-
series-perils-of-position-specialization/. If your really interested check out the German orSpanish football structures and youth/junior policies online.
8. Awareness:
George: Very strong on the counter with improvement in our passing game. At our best our
passing game was pleasing the New Norfolk coach commented on how we moved the
ball around. Still a work in progress though. Our defensive off-side strategy often disjointed
and still some sloppy decision making was prevalent (though less so than at start of season).

Dave: Lacking by the coaches. They were often seen yelling at each other, chasing camels,
chasing each other, attempting to bribe the referee, going the biff or attempting to don thered and green and pretend they were much younger!!!
Player wise, we showed improvement and in my opinion we put in the best half by any team
of the season when we had divisional champions Glenorchy at our mercy 3-1 at half time. This
half I was greatly impressed by our awareness and the whole team was brilliant. The 2nd half
saw our awareness drop/ or was that fitness?? and we were over run. Overall we were shortof tactical and positioning awareness, maybe reflective of our social footballing position
George mentioned earlier.
Highlights certainly included the two wins against Beachside, the 4-4 draw at New Norfolk
and the first half at home to eventual divisional champions Glenorchy. Other highlights
included Rods barbeque at Sandown and the fish and chip meal following a trouncing inthe Cup at Olympia. (Eds note: What about that amazing wing run by G Wilson, cross to D
Sayers to calmy slot the ball into the net with left foot against Huonville U16). In our first season
we trended upwards and were mostly competitive. For those who continue with the club next
season we got a taste of what we can expect in the U16 competition in our friendly match onSaturday v Huon Valley. Well be up against bigger, stronger, faster and fitter players. Our
players are possibly better looking and their heads are not as hard (and not as stinky).
Nevertheless we were going pretty well and chasing an unlikely victory when we fatally
weakened the team by bringing Dave and I on in the second half.
Im sure I speak on behalf of Dave as well as myself when I say that the U14s have been a
pleasure to coach and its been great to see the ongoing improvement, so a big thank you
from us. Also a big thank you for turning up each week to training and matches and also for
approaching these events with the right attitude. You really are a great bunch of kids. You
demonstrated good sportsmanship on the field at all times and not once did you give a
referee any grief. In short you are a credit to the club and your community. From a biggerperspective, its thanks to you that we have a workable model going forward and its thanks to
you that our Sea Dragon stars of the future will hopefully have a pathway that continues on
from the juniors. We hope youll all continue with the club again next year and should you doso we look forward to continuing the journey with you in the development of our club. For
those of you who might move on we wish you well in whatever you choose to do and we
thank you for being part of the story. Just remember one thing once a Sea Dragon, always
a Sea Dragon. Hopefully see you all next year.
(Eds note:) I am sure the players, parents and club as a whole would like to thank George for putting in
the initial groundwork to see the Youth team come into fruition. One thing we have learnt this year is
that a Youth team really does need two coaches).
Yours (for the last time this year), The Coaches Box

Cygnet won four goals to one after Benny scored two and had countless other shots at goal.
Tommy scored one off a brilliant pass from Rory who was tireless in the midfield tackling and
passing endlessly. The fourth goal was scored by Harry who started before the halfway line
and dribbled through all four of the opposition to end his run in a brilliant goal in the back of
the net.
A great way to end the season playing as a team and supporting each other throughout thegame.

Wow what a great way to finish the season. All the boys put in 100% effort right from the start. Our ball skills dominated the game leaving St Aloysius to play a game of constant defence.
Well done to all of the boys, you have all improved greatly as individuals and as a team
throughout the season.
It has been great to see you all really focussing on your ball skills and passing. The five of you
are a great team and I have really enjoyed being your coach.
Well done

As the season came to a close it was a hard fought 3-1 victory against a much improved St
Aloysius. Most teams in this division improved greatly at the back end of the season, especially in
defence when numbers in goal make scoring that little bit more difficult.
The difference with this U8 Green team is they smell the goals and always continue to fight to
make their way through; It has been a pleasure all season to see them never give up and always
play to the final whistle (even more impressive considering we had no substitutes all season).
Combined with their fantastic footballing skills, this never give up attitude has seen these 7 kids go
undefeated for the season (the 2nd season in a row for some of them).
Special thanks to Luca Vanzino and Michaela Harley plus all the parents who have helped with
the combined U8 unit all season. Both teams have been at the top of their divisions all season

As avid readers of The Sideline Scribe will recall, the coaching staff decided about 1/3rd of the
way through the season to discontinue the rotational policy whereby everyone played in every
field position. This allowed the kids to become confident and consistent in their nominal positions
and the result was some very fine football being played for the balance of the season.
In this match we decided that the attackers would be defenders and the defenders would takeon the role as the goal scorers. Having comfortably defeated Calvin Black twice before, this
strategy presented the kids with an appreciation of what it means to be in a team the whole is
the sum of its parts.
It was very pleasing to see skills such as supporting an attacking player and not leaving them
isolated and positioning for a centre pass into the box being undertaken by Toby, Sasha, Sofia
and especially Jack. Normally, as defenders, this was a role that they were not used to, but
having watched Griffin, Callan, Joshua and Otis in action throughout the year they attacked
splendidly.
Our new defending quartet whilst chafing at the bit- to go forward, were very disciplined and
maintained the correct defensive field position and took the right choices when necessary by
either running the ball forward, passing forward or knocking the ball over the sideline.
In a match where we dominated a somewhat hapless opposition, it was pleasing to see parents
and players from both sides reward the Calvin team when they knocked in a cracker of a goal
right on full time. A heartening way for them to finish their season.

The U9 Greens played their final match against Newtown Storm their third meeting this season.
The first match was played on a make shift mini pitch on Soldiers Memorial due to a double
booking with the Dog club but this time, the dogs were nowhere to be seen and we got a decent
match on a decent pitch. Newtown actually beat us on the previous meeting so there was a little
bit of anxiety before the match.
Despite missing a couple of the regulars (Demi and Jase were away) the team were all on good
form and it was great to see them finish off the season on a high. Oscar O put on the captains hat
this week and quickly got into the groove organising players up front. He and Denzel workedsome great back and fore passing manoeuvres at the start of the match and, despite some great

shots from Oscar O, it was Denzel who kicked off the scoring (excuse the pun) with a smashing
drive from directly in front of the goals.
Cobi put in the first half stint in goals and helped the team up to a 1-0 half time score. Denzel took
over the goalie gloves at half time and also did a good job in the face of increasing pressure.
Cobi came out of goals and helped to pile on the pressure notching up another 2 goals before
full time.
Liam put in some great defence work, spoiling a few dangerous attack runs and clearing the ball
away with his infamous boot. Tim helped out in defence for the first half and then moved up
forward help out in the attack. Leyroy had a cracker of a match getting stuck in all the time and
scoring his well-deserved second goal of the season.
Its been a great season with some great wins, a few defeats, but all in all a very enjoyable
season. I am really impressed with the team and how they have improved this year a credit to
their coach (Ric that is!).
Thanks everyone.

For the last game of the season, the Under 9 Whites faced one of the strongest sides:
Taroona. Again our team was depleted, but we had Ethan and Zac from the Under 8s arriving
at the ground early to give us a hand. Ethan volunteered for goalie, which I thought was a
brave call, considering the quality of the opposition. He proved himself well up to the task,
making some impressive saves with courage and confidence. As for Zac, he was on fire from
the kickoff. Within a few minutes he had scored twice. Taroona, yet to score, were amazed.
Cygnet pretended not to be. Then Taroona woke up and started to play the way we are
used to seeing them, and scored four for the half. Despite some near misses, Cygnet could
not quite find the net again, but were playing well.
With the half-time score at 2-4, and seeing how the team was playing, it still felt as though we
were in with a chance. We started the second half with tons of energy and a bit more
determination. Cygnet was showing more teamwork and better passing than I have seen yet,and we were unlucky not to score at all this half. Taroona added another three, but Rory in
goal did a great job in saving many more. The final score did not reflect the quality of the
game. Skill levels were fairly even with the exception of ball skills: Taroona were way ahead
with their ability to control the ball and boot it firmly where they wanted it to go. This is
something our players can work on over summer. Ina and Elliot worked well together as
forwards, and Romi and Zac never gave up in defence. Saras is doing a great job of
positioning and passing. Riley did a fantastic job, covering the field and really taking every
opportunity he could to defend or attack. And Ethan's determination was great to see in the
forward line. Despite the loss, it was a terrific game to end the season: hard-fought, well-
played and great fun.

U/10 Green
With many away a great bunch of U9s stepped in and gave us the help we needed to start
the game. They started, some of the U10s started, and a few didn't start at all. The first half
saw St Virgils dominate and it was only a gallant few that kept us in touch. Down 1 - 0 at half
time was not what we were expecting. A few jokes, a couple of smirks that turned into smilesand the rest of the team then relaxed and found their straps. St Virgils frustrated, thinking itwas them that that had held us back (when it was merely ourselves), turned on each other
and began playing panic-hoof-it-football. The Green Machine kept its cool, held its lines and
started shooting at goals. A perfect half to finish a fantastic season.
SPECIAL THANKS TO U9 PARENTS AND PLAYERS THAT HELPED US OUT THIS WEEK.
EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS TO CHRIS ATKINS FOR ALL HIS COACHING/HELPING/ADVISING THIS
YEAR
THANKS BOYS. MANY, MANY THANKS TO PARENTS FOR COMING AND CHEERING EVERY WEEK.

GALA AND TROPHY DAY OCTOBER 12th
U/10 White
Well what a climax to the season. When this team started together only two players had
played soccer before. And in this final match the team showed how far they have all come
in working together, their ball skills, and their tenacity in chasing the ball down to keep it off
the opposition. We fronted with eight players for this game and had one player from the
opposition join us to make up the nine (but in hindsight we should not have had
him...obviously told to kick the ball out the sideline!). Molly, Sadie and Bobbin were brilliant inthe forward line, Isaac and Fynn worked hard together in the midfield with Toby and Hamish
pounding the ball up forward from the defence. Will in goals played a great game once his
focus was switched on. The final scoreline did not really reflect the quality of this game and
the team are to be congratulated on a brilliant effort in this match...a vast improvement from
the start of the year. Well done team and thanks to all coaches and parents for making this
happen.
See you all at the presentation......
Sea Dragons U10 White 0 lost to West Hobart 4
U12 Sea Dragons
Last game of the season and we started brightly with a few players missing we had the
prospect of a hard game on the big pitch at Sandy Bay.
Like a lot of our games this season, we had a lot of the ball and attacked the opposition with
some nice passing in the middle of the park, but we just couldn't carve out any goals.
We then paid the price for not converting our chances as Princes Street broke and scoredagainst the run of play.

Again in the second half we were very industrious and enjoyed large spells of possession butwere punished twice and slid to a three goal deficit.
Seth managed to pull one back in the closing minutes but the recovery was not possible.
A great performance even in defeat.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the club and the team for
making the season enjoyable and entertaining for both me and my family and hopefully the
team all had a good time, a few laughs and learnt a few lessons on the way.
We may not have lit up the league table, but as a group we stuck together through some
difficult results and as a team we have all improved (including myself..!) from where we
began in training earlier in the year.
Three cheers to Cygnet U12's...

Cygnet Sea-Dragon Victory Song
Chorus:
Green is the Colour
Football is the Game
Were all together
And winning is our aim
So cheer us onThrough the sun and the rain
For Cygnet, Cygnet is our name
Verse 1:
Here by the Huon whether rain or fine
We can shine
All the time
Home or away
Come and see us play
Youre welcome any day.
Repeat Chorus
To Finish:
What do we eat?
SeaweedHow do we eat it?
Raw
