I have been thinking over the last fewweeks just how easily means become ends inthemselves and we forget the original reasonfor the things we do. This seemed to apply tomany Christmas activities. For example,Christmas is the time we celebrate the Incarna-tion when God in Christ came to earth as ababy to save and redeem us, but the celebra-tion has become an end in itself. For manypeople Christmas is just a celebration partywithout any religious significance at all. Ourgift giving and card sending was supposed tobe a token and a reminder of just how muchGod has given us in Jesus Christ, but probably

as a consequence of commercialism our giftgiving has got out of control. People, especial-ly children, are inundated with presents theydo not need and often do not want: gift givinghas become an end in itself. However, thereare many good things about Christmas. Peopleare very generous at this time of year as theCharities will confirm, and if we are buyingpresents for others we are not just thinkingabout ourselves. In addition, there is recogni-tion that the family is an important aspect ofChristmas, a reflection of God’s blessing offamily life by entrusting His Son to the care ofMary and Joseph.

The main point I am making is just howeasy it is to lose sight of the original purpose ofan activity and get caught up in the activityitself. As a consequence, we often end up nothaving a clear idea why we do certain things. So, it is valuable to ask ourselves why we docertain things because it reminds to look atends not just to focus on the means.

This applies to our Christian lives and wor-ship; we need to ask ourselves why we dothings (end) not just do them because we al-ways have (means). Why, is a good question:what is the point and purpose of reading theBible, praying, singing hymns, listening to ser-mons, reading or singing the liturgy etc. Thefirst question in the Westminster Shorter Con-

Rector’s Letter

Dear Friends,

Particularly for those people I have notbeen able to see over the last few weeks,I hope you had a blessed Christmas andare already experiencing a happy andenjoyable New Year. Many of you, likeme, have been enduring a particularlynasty bug over the Christmas period. Ihope you recover soon and begin to en-joy this New Year. May I take thisopportunity to thank all those peoplewho have helped ensure the Serviceshave continued while I have been ill, particularly Moira, Glennis, Eric andFred.

fession (preparation course for those about tobe baptised) gets right to the point.

Question: What is the chief end of man?Answer: Man’s chief end is to glorify

God, and to enjoy him forever.

The answer is at first very straight forward;to glorify God i.e. it is to recognise His natureand character and to give voice to His love formankind as expressed in Jesus Christ andthrough those who serve Him by seeking tomeet the needs of others. But what does itmean to enjoy God? There does not seem to bemuch joy around in many churches! Perhapsthere is in the more charismatic churches, butare they enjoying God or enjoying themselvesor one another’s company? Enjoying God, oreven enjoying another person—what does thatreally mean?

When we fall in love with someone, welong to be with them; we simply want to enjoytheir presence. Perhaps that is how we shouldbe enjoying God. This sounds reasonable buthow do we enjoy someone we cannot detect

with our five senses, it is beyond us. It is ofcourse the work of the Holy Spirit to makeGod real to us. Can we help in the process? The answer is yes, there are a number of med-itational techniques referred to as practisingthe presence of God, which can be used to en-able us to draw closer to God and begin toenjoy Him more. I will try and deal with thistopic in my next letter.

The main point to emphasise is that it is notBible reading, praying, saying the liturgy, singing hymns or anything else we may do—these are all ‘means’, to an end—that ‘end’ isto Glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

May God bless and enable you to enjoyHim forever,

Yours in Christ,

This was the Overseas Committee’s imagi-native way of drawing our attention to theimportance of the Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs, geddit) which we’re supposedto be achieving by 2015, a prospect which isnot, at the moment, looking too rosy.

The Overseas Committee wished to en-courage us to become like midges, annoyingand needling people into doing somethingabout these goals.

There’s a theological principle at stake.God has created a world in which peopleshould be able to live without fear: withoutfear of starvation, persecution, homelessness, poverty, ignorance, torture.

Human rights—on which the MDGs arebased—is another way of talking about ourGod-given human dignity. So, at the risk ofharping on, let me do a bit of midgy work.

Among the MDGs is that of banishing hun-ger and food insecurity. Initially, some

progress was made towards this goal but re-cently things have got worse again.

More of the world’s crops are being used tofuel our greedy cars; more grain is being usedto feed animals for the table, as living stand-ards rise in India and China. Generally thispushes food prices up, making life harder forthe very poor.

In December I visited Malawi as part of aScottish Government project, looking forproducts to import into the UK. One of theprincipal aims was to visit the rice-growingarea in the north of the country, as we (the Bal-more Coach House with our partners RainbowTurtle in Paisley) are planning to bring in acontainer of rice early this year to serve inschools and to sell in shops and on churchstalls.

I spent a fascinating day touring round thecountry areas around Karonga, which are in-tensively farmed.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries inthe world, with a per capita income of US$170. For Africa it’s densely populated, with13.5 million people. Some 85 % of the popula-

ONE of the highlights of last year’sGeneral Synod was, for me, the arrivalof the MiDGeS.

IT was hailed the best quote from a con-ference on old age jointly backed by theScottish Episcopal Church, ACTS andFaith in Older People.

‘Wasteland or Harvest Field?’ was an ecu-menical exploration of the needs of olderpeople and the benefits they bring to churches.

In all, 120 people attended the successfulone-day gathering held at Gillis College in Ed-inburgh. It drew speakers and participantsfrom as far afield as Inverness and Norwich.

The purpose was to share recent work onold age and spiritual care. A spokesman said:

“Demographic change alerts us to the impor-tance of considering the needs of the oldermembers of our society not least within ourcongregations.

”We hoped to encourage those involved intraining pastoral carers, elders, clergy, chap-lains and all who visit or work with olderpeople on behalf of our churches to take thetopic seriously!

“We had to refuse places to 40 people asthe conference was fully subscribed so wehope to offer a similar event in May.”

tion derives its living from agriculture; 90% ofall farmers are small holders.

Typically such farmers will own 4 acres, but farm only about half of it, will have a hoeas their basic tool, will use 60% of their pro-duction for food and 40% as a cash crop.

Daudi Phiri, a ‘model farmer’ whom I met, farms all his land, uses 1.5 acres for maize andcassava and the remaining 2.5 acres for rice, producing an amazing 2.4 tonnes.

Most of this he sells to purchase agricultur-al implements, seeds and fertiliser, to improvethe family’s housing, to pay for health care andfor secondary education.

Unusually, Daudi Phiri owns a plough andoxen. Nevertheless the achievement of plant-ing, weeding (three times during the growingseason) and harvesting/threshing 2.5 acres byhand is extraordinary.

It is more than many can achieve, partlybecause of the cost of seed and fertiliser, andof agricultural implements, partly because ofthe sheer scale of the labour involved.

How can we help poor farmers in Malawi?By providing them with an international mar-

ket where they can get a better price for theircrops and so begin to work their way out ofpoverty.

If all you can do is grow just enough to liveoff, you will never make progress.

If you can grow a surplus, get a better pricefor your crops, then you can start to buy somebasic tools, spend more on seed and fertilizer, and send your children to secondary school. You can plan and build up your family andyour community.

Over the last year, we have had a tremen-dous response from Episcopal churches acrossScotland to appeals to sell the products we im-port from Swaziland.

If over the next few months you hear anannoying buzz, it means we’re after you againto try some rice as well.

Or, of course, you could just give in andcontact the Coach House on 01360620254/742 before we strike.

March will see delegates from aroundScotland gathering in Glasgow to ex-change ideas on how to strengthenCompanion Links with Dioceses over-seas, building on relationshipsdeveloped at the Lambeth Conference.

Before last year’s Lambeth Conference anumber of overseas bishops and their spousesvisited dioceses here in Scotland.

Many were from our Companion Diocesesand this time shared was clearly appreciated byour visitors.

Sharing in the life of other dioceses ena-bled many within our congregations to feel acloser link with our Companion Dioceses.

But where did that lead us?The need to keep such conversations going

has to be a high priority. With that in mind the Provincial Overseas

Committee will host a conference on 21 Marchin Glasgow to examine how we can developour Companion Links with Dioceses overseas.

Chaired by Revd Canon Duncan McCosh, convener of the Overseas Committee of theSEC, the conference will be opened by ourPrimus, Bishop Idris Jones.

Bishop Idris said:“First and foremost Lambeth 2008 was an

experience as a result of which we felt our-selves to be part of a living and livelycommunity that was of great relevance in theworld at large.

“Ongoing dialogue is of the utmost impor-tance to the future of the AnglicanCommunion. Mutual sharing and support in-creases the sense of partnership with diocesesthat are far from us in physical distance andreduces emotional and theological distancetoo.

“Also we must not forget the needs of thepoor as expressed through the walk of witness

that bishops and spouses shared togetherthrough the centre of London and the commit-ment of the Communion to support thoseagencies working to achieve the MillenniumDevelopment Goals.”

Bishop Idris will open the discussion witha scriptural introduction to companion linkag-es and a reflection on what he has broughtback from his overseas experiences, and a dis-cussion exploring what global links are for.

Other speakers include Revd Canon EdgarRuddock, director of the international relationsteam at USPG: Anglicans in World Mission.

He will speak about how mission works inpractice in today’s world and how has itchanged.

Revd Canon Stephen Lyon, general secre-tary of PWM (Partnership for World Mission),will offer practical advice for making Com-panion Links work and lead a discussion onwhat can we do to respond to the agendas.

Speakers will also share experiences ofCompanion Links in the Scottish context.

At the end of the day delegates can expectto have identified actions building on the valueof the pre Lambeth Hospitality Initiative to de-velop and deepen the quality of Diocesan Linkrelationships and workings. These are expect-ed to include ways in which we can:○ Seriously engage with the Millennium De-

velopment Goals (MDGs) and Five Marksof Mission;

○ Renew and refresh relationships;○ Live out the challenge of the Lambeth Con-

ference of ‘listening and learning’;○ Develop stronger more informed prayer

links;○ Build on successes by sharing stories.

Have you ever been to Greenbelt (theannual, edgy Christian arts festival inCheltenham)?Have you never attended, but know ofthe concept?Have you ever thought it would be goodto have a similar festival in Scotland? Not MacGreenbelt, but something dis-tinctly Scottish, arty, cultural andrelevant to today.

Think faith meeting culture - arts - theolo-gy - ecology - politics - philosophy -spirituality - justice.

If so, read on for the background to ‘TheProject’.

Last August’s Greenbelt hosted a conver-sation for anyone interested in ‘doingsomething like Greenbelt’ in Scotland.

At a second meeting in Perth in November,Dot Reid, John Cross and Graham Maule wereappointed to take the idea of a Scottish festivala step further by asking people to join a steer-

ing group.Graham Maule, of Iona Community’s Wild

Goose Resource Group, explained: “This weare doing.

“People are currently being approached, and in the meantime we have done a little bitmore thinking and a little more organising sothat we have more of a presence and more op-portunity for people to join and have a voice inthis thing.”

The working name of the project is ‘TheProject: a Scottish festival of arts, culture andfaith’.

Graham added: “We agreed in Perth that aseries of smaller gatherings would be a goodthing to shape the bigger event and to create acommunity of people willing to invest theirtime and energy in it.

“That will be the first task of the SteeringGroup—to call us together a couple of times in2009.”

St. Cyprian“Quiet hope in a bad world”The following is an extract from a letterfrom Cyprian. He lived in the 3rd cen-tury, became Bishop of Carthage andwas martyred for his faith. The letterwas addressed to his old friend Donatus.

“This seems a cheerful world, Donatus, when I view it from this fair garden, under theshadow of these vines. But if I climbed tosome great mountain and looked out over thewide lands, you know very well what I wouldsee: brigands on the high roads, pirates on the

seas; in the amphitheatres men murdered toplease the applauding crowds; under all roofsmisery and selfishness. It is really a bad world,Donatus, an incredibly bad world.

“Yet in the midst of it, I have found a quietand holy people. They have discovered a joywhich is a thousand times better than anypleasure in this sinful life. They are despisedand persecuted, but they care not. They haveovercome the world. These people, Donatus, are the Christians and I am one of them.”

Appeal to St. Cyprian’sIn December, I attended a M.U. meetingat Cumbernauld where the speaker wasRevd. Andrew Low, the Chief ExecutiveOfficer for Glasgow City Mission. I wasvery impressed by his talk about whatbrought him from Canada to work inthe mission field in Glasgow and to hearabout the work of Glasgow City Mis-sion.

After the meeting I spoke to Andrew andtold him how we at St. Cyprian’s were sup-porting the mission by providing food andtoiletries from time to time and he thanked mefor this support. I asked him if there was anyother way that St. Cyprian’s could help andhave since received the letter printed below.

Moira Jamieson

. . . . . You mentioned that I should contactyou if GCM had any specific needs that StCyprian’s Episcopal Church may be able tohelp with. I recently had a meeting with GCMstaff about our ongoing food costs as we serveGlasgow’s homeless and vulnerable men andwomen. I was amazed to find out that wespend roughly £1,300 per year on Knorr Bouil-lon Stock for our soup. Yet, this cost isn’tactually that surprising when I consider thatwe actually serve over 32,000 cups of soupeach year!

We have a dedicated team of volunteerswho come in during the day and make home-made soup for our evening opening. Soup maybe simple, but it is warm, freshly made and fullof vegetables and nutrients. What better to of-fer men and women coming in from the cold?Especially as this soup may be the only sourceof fresh food and nutrients that they will get.We never underestimate how much it means toan individual to serve them and treat them likesomeone of worth. This action is such a practi-cal expression of Christian love.

I wonder if St Cyprian’s Episcopal Churchcould help by providing some of the stock thatwe need? The church congregation could ei-ther collect packs of Knorr stock cubes ormake a donation towards the financial cost thatwe incur. I appreciate that the total amount werequire is great, but if the church could helpwith a months supply, or collect stock cubeson a continuing basis, then that would be agreat help.

We currently purchase this in 2kg tubs intwo different varieties (vegetable and ham),but this is quite expensive for an individual tobuy on their own. If individuals from thechurch could buy packs of vegetable and hamKnorr stock cubes from the supermarket thenthat would be equally as useful.

This really is a practical way in which thechurch can ensure that we can continue to meetthe immediate needs of Glasgow’s most vul-nerable.

If you would like more information, or justto talk through this idea, then please give me acall and I would be happy to discuss further.

Yours sincerelyRevd. Andrew Low
