Mental Health Services (Psychiatrist, psychologists, occupational therapists, mental health nurses)

The Mental Health Services have the responsibility for the therapeutic part of the inmates life in prison. They are running individual and group therapeutic sessions and leisure activities for motivating the offenders to seek a more therapeutic collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

A very important part is the Rehabilitation Programme for Addiction that has been running for a year now.

Social Welfare Services The social workers working in the prison department get in

contact with the inmates in the first few days of their imprisonment. They are also in close collaboration with the family of the inmate as well as the inmate and have meetings for a clear history report. Social workers are responsible for the communication between the inmate and their families and their relations. The inmates can ask for a social worker if they think that they need to see one, and they are given an appointment. If the family of the inmates need support of the Welfare Services, another social worker is linked with them in the community but has close cooperation with the social worker in the prison.

The social workers in the Cyprus Prison Department are also responsible for the court reports that the judges ask for the ‘under trial’ offenders held in prison, before or during the trial.

SchoolFormal Education The educational programme in the prison is under the

jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture. A teacher is assigned to the Prison school with the obligation of the coordination of the educational programmes.

Inmates have the chance to be involved in the educational programmes run by the prison school.

The subject area of these programmes is chosen according to the educational level of the inmates, their own choices and the subjects chosen by the Prison Administration

Special emphasis is given on vocational training so that after the prisoner’s release he/she will be able to find a job in the free market. For example carpentry, plumbing, cookery or elsewhere in the prison’s workshops

Rehabilitation Programmes

In 2012 we have organized a series of lectures by specialists on specific matters relevant to their release.

For example, vocational rehabilitation, how to apply for a job, the prisoner’s rights (by a member of the Ombudsman), etc.

Sport and Prison

Sports is a fundamental tool for rehabilitation in Cyprus Prison. Due to this the prisons have always supported the creation of infrastructure and programs for provision of opportunities to inmates for exercising, group sports and skills.

Sport and Prison

The sports and athletic programmes are supported by the provision of trainers who organise a program of 2 visits per ward per week, supporting the inmates in their training programs.

Inmates are given permission in using the facilities under a specific program and supervision. Permissions are granted on the basis of inmates cooperation and attitudes upon request.

Sport and Prison Facilities are always in the process of improvement. Understanding the importance of group sport the

prison organises events supporting their implication. Recently a football tournament has been organised under the title «building Bridges».

The tournament involves 4 football teams, that have offered their voluntary participation. The fifth team is the prisons team which is consisted of both inmates and wardens. The tournament as planned will have a duration of 10 games and all games will be played within the prison football field. Games will be open for different wards to watch according to security organisation.

Page 19: CYPRUS PRISON DEPARTMENT Pan-European Conference 16-17 June 2014 Paris ANDREAS PELAVAS.

Sport and Prison The purpose of the tournament is to organize

a continuous events which will occupy the interest and motivation of both players and observers. The tournament has already been publicized and will be followed on by the media. Relatives of inmates will have the chance of watching games offering an opportunity of building relations with their relatives in a different way than just the visits.

Our goal is to establish such tournaments that will run from September to June each year.
