PREFACE
The Third International Congress of Acarology (Prague, August 31 -September 6, 1971) was held under the auspices of the Presidium of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences which had accepted the ·proposal of the Committ-ee of the International Congress of Acarology to organize this meeting of acarologists in Czechoslovakia and subsequently requested the Institute of Parasitology of the C:iiechoslovak Academy of Sciences to set about this task. The members of the Organizing Committee of the Congress express their gratitude to the Presidium of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, especially to its President Academician J. Kofesnlk who personally attended the Congress.
The Coogress sessioos were attended by more than 200 specialists from 32 countries and by World Health Organizatioo representatives. In twelve sectioos and one symposium 153 papers were read, all of which are included in ·this volume. The papers are published in extenso, with the exception of a few communications presented by authors who decided to publish them in professional journals. In such cases abstracts of the papers are included in the volume for the sake of completeness.
The sessions were held in congress languages and simultaneous translation was provided into English and Russian. All papers in this volume are printed in English and this necessitated a language revision of the major part of the manuscript. Thanks to the kind efforts of Mr. F .G.A.M. Smit and Mrs. A.M. Wright of the British Museum (Natural History), the Zoological Museum, Tring, this arduous task was accomplished at short notice. Invaluable assistance in the translation of some papers and in the preparation of manuscripts for the press was rendered by Mrs. E. Belyjov.l, Mrs. M. Daskova and Mrs. J. WaKnerova of the Institute of Parasitology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Also invaluable were the efforts exerted by Drs V. t.emy, F. Dusb&bek and E. Honz&kova, the staff members of the same Institute, who assisted with the correction of proofs. To all of them the Editors express their deep gratitude. Sincere thanks are also due to the members of ACADEMIA, the Publishing House of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, especially to Dr. M. CHkova and Mr. J .Kudmovsq, for their cooperation and understanding enabling this volume to be publish· ed in the shottest possible time.
