“…..real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence

or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contamination.” (US EPA)

Land that contains low to moderate levels of contamination

Contamination can include: Old gas stations (lead based gas) Old factories that used toxic metals like LEAD or MERCURY Cleaning solvents

Can be redeveloped with environmental cleanup

What is a Brownfield?

EPA provides the guidance, but it is the community that identifies a property as a Brownfield

Abandoned property Active but Underutilized Real estate turnover complicated by real

or perceived contamination Property use Blighted –significantly

conflicts with a master plan

THE COMMUNITY DEFINES ITS BROWNFIELDS

What are the three categories of major contaminants in a brownfield?

Eutrophication Recall1. Describe how eutrophication occurs? Phosphate and nitrogen runoff cause algal blooms. This algae dies and microrganisms decompose it absorbing oxygen and creating sediment.

Page 30: D. 24 Mr. Fleming. D.24 Explain how the accumulation of mercury, phosphates and nitrates affects the quality of water and the organisms that live in.

2. How does eutrophication impact the environment?

It lowers the amount of available oxygen.

Bioaccumulation refers to the accumulation of substances, such as pesticides, mercury and other toxins in an organism over time.

Biomagnification refers to the accumulation of toxins through the trophic levels of a food chain. It results in an increased concentration of the toxin in the higher organisms of the food chain.

Bioaccumulation vs Biomagnification

Page 34: D. 24 Mr. Fleming. D.24 Explain how the accumulation of mercury, phosphates and nitrates affects the quality of water and the organisms that live in.

What happens to the concentration of toxins as you move up the food chain?

They tend to increase as you go from the prey to predator up the food chain.
