We are not a wealthy community – half of our students are from families who struggle with economic uncertainty and hardships. But ours is a community rich in spirit and in caring for others and we have a tradition of giving what we can. In that spirit, our school is leading all other SMMUSD schools in Santa Monica in the percentage of families who have donated to support the Ed Foundation. Over 60% of Edison families have already contributed! We’re still aiming for 100% participation and no amount is too small. Everything helps us get closer to our goal of full funding for all the programs supported by the Ed Foundation. When you’re enjoying your students’ musical concerts in December, remember that these programs and many more that enrich our children’s educations and enhance their well-being at school are supported by donations to the Ed Foundation. We have a $50,000 matching gift that will double gifts made by the end of this calendar year. There was an outpouring of emergency supplies for families trying to apply for asylum in the US and who are stuck at the Tijuana border. Thank you for your generosity and our appreciation to PTA Co-VP for Community Integration Rebecca Cannara for organizing this opportunity for us to give. The Edison Family Support Network is also responding to needs within our own community. They invite your donation of cash or gift cards that can be used to support some of our families who are struggling with serious illnesses and economic hardships during this holiday season. You can leave donation of money and/or gift cards at the front office. No amount is too small, as anything helps. Finally, some of our 5 th grade students have been participating in a project to give back to our local community by capturing the stories and the wisdom of some of the Spanish- speaking elders in our local neighborhood. The students, supported by Edison parents Chiara Arroyo and Daniela Weiner and teacher Constanza Murcia have learned how to interview and podcast and have collected and preserved a number of their stories. Please join us at a “Listening Party” on December 18 at 6:00 pm to hear these stories and recognize our young people. Thank you all for being such a giving and caring community! Friday, December 14 for Maestras Romo Cervantes,Díaz-Roquette, Martinez and Cueva. 5 th Graders: Pali Camp December Payments Due Now. If you elected to split the cost of tuition to Pali Camp into payments, make your December payment 12/19. Lost and Found –Please take a careful look in the Lost and Found and reclaim your child’s lost articles by Friday December 14. After that, PTA volunteers will be cleaning and donating what is left behind so that those jackets can be useful to others this winter. Young Storytellers’ The Big Show! -- Ten of our Edison 5 th graders gave up their lunch time and stayed afterschool on Wednesdays for 7 weeks for the opportunity to work with writing mentors and produce short screenplays. Our appreciation to the Young Storytellers program, the mentors and actors who came to perform the students’ work! As always, it was a wonderful and hilarious evening! Congratulations to: Daniel Corrado, Sebi Thorson, Julian Gonzalez-Alfaro, Ruby Diaz Magaña, Gabriela Paniagua, Alex Alvizo, Meliton Garcia Curiel, Isabella Castañeda- Jimenez, Anthony Alarcon, Isabela Padilla. Edison Codes! Edison classes have been participating in the national Hour of Code campaign this last week – helping students learn about the wonderful world of coding. Some of the most lively classes have been Big Buddy/Little Buddy class projects of lower and upper grade students coding together. On sunny days, our students have been programming Edison’s Dash Robots on iPads and sending them “dashing” around the patios. Siempre estoy impresionada por lo cariñosa y generosa que es nuestra comunidad de Edison. No somos una comunidad rica – la mitad de nuestros estudiantes son de familias quienes batallan con la incertitud económica y situaciones difíciles. Pero la nuestra es una comunidad rica en espíritu que se preocupa por otros y tenemos una tradición de regalar lo que podemos. En ese espíritu, nuestra escuela está ganándoles a todas las otras escuelas de SMMUSD en Santa Mónica en el porcentaje de familias quienes han donado para apoyar la Fundación de Educación. ¡Más de 60% de las familias de Edison ya han contribuido! Todavía estamos luchando para el 100% de participación y ninguna cantidad es muy pequeña. Todo nos ayuda a llegar más cerca a nuestra meta de fondos completos para los programas que patrocina la Fundación de Educación. Cuando ustedes están disfrutando de los conciertos musicales de los estudiantes en diciembre, acuérdense que estos programas y muchos más que enriquecen la educación de nuestros niños y aumentan su bien estar en la escuela son patrocinados por donaciones a la Fundación de Educación. Finalmente, algunos de nuestros estudiantes de 5º grado han estado participando en un proyecto de regresar a nuestra comunidad local capturando historias de sabiduría de algunas personas mayores quienes hablan español en nuestra vecindad local. Los estudiantes, apoyados por las mamás de Edison Chiara Arroyo y Daniela Wiener y maestra Constanza Murcia han aprendido cómo entrevistar y publicar y han colectado y preservado una cantidad de sus historias. Por favor acompáñenos en nuestra “Fiesta de Escuchar” el 18 de diciembre a las 6:00 pm para escuchar estas historias y reconocer a nuestros jóvenes.
