Why discipleship?Jesus, in Matt 28:19-20 commanded us to make disciples, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age”. Discipleship is the way by which, through a mutually accountable learning relationship, members of the discipleship group are prepared to then become like Christ. The discipleship relationship is not complete until the disciple becomes the discipler, the mentee becomes a mentor.

What is a disciple? As a Do Something Disciple, I am in a disciplined pursuit for the heart of the Father, a heart that is being perfected in love for God and people.

This involves being in a relationship of mutuality, where two or more people submit to one another. In this case, they are in a relationship for the purpose of nurturing the heart of the Father, leading to Christlikeness.

Page 7: d GROUP JOURNAL - Rock Church March 1903_v6... · 8 Journal Overview What is this journal for? This journal will help guide your daily devotional time with God, maintain accountability

7

What is a dGroup?A Discipleship Group or dGroup is a gender-specific group of 3 to 5 believers (including the leader) who meet together weekly, in a relationship of mutuality, for the purpose of accelerated spiritual transformation. This group will meet with the intent of each participant starting their own group of 3-5 and replicating what they have experienced themselves.

What is the goal of the dGroup? The goal of the dGroup is to provide an environment for Christlikeness to be transferred from one life to another by:

1. Learning and sharing within a relationship of mutuality or submission to one another

2. Increasing competence in each of the d12 attributes

3. Maturing an ability to reproduce and lead a dGroup of your own

What is the role of the dGroup leader? The dGroup leader is to:

1. Walk faithfully with Jesus

2. Be led by the Holy Spirit as you lead the group

3. Facilitate regular meetings

4. Regularly pray for each member

5. Prayerfully equip each disciple to make disciples and start their own dGroup at the end of the 12-18 months

Journal OverviewWhat is this journal for? This journal will help guide your daily devotional time with God, maintain accountability between those in a discipleship relationship and monitor growth in the d12 competencies.

How to Use the dGroup journal 1. Take the d12 self-assessment. One of your goals will be to improve on each of these twelve descriptors of the Father’s heart. Each month there will be a focus on one of the d12 characteristics including ideas to improve in that area. Prayerfully identify and create a goal for each area. SEE EXAMPLE ON PAGE 18

2. Make a daily journal entry from your bible reading.

3. Refer to your journal as a guide in your weekly dGroup meeting.

4. Track your monthly d12 growth goals on a weekly a basis.

Do Something Disciple AssessmentAs a Do Something Church, we are committed to ‘living out’ our faith in the world. A Do Something Disciple is a person with a disciplined pursuit of the heart of the Father.

The d12 is a list of 12 expressions of the Father’s Heart. The d12 assessment is a self-evaluation of where your ‘heart’ and ‘hand’ are in relationship to these 12 areas.

The assessment is simply a guide for growth as you proceed through your discipleship journey with your group. You will take the assessment measuring all 12 competencies at the beginning of your journey with the goal of improving one step in each category each month.

In addition to the weekly discipleship questions, there will be additional discussions related to one of the d12 attributes each month, giving you an opportunity to improve in that area of your life. You will be responsible to input your original and desired score each week in your journal in order to keep track and focus on your growth week to week.

This journal will facilitate that growth with resources for each of the d12 attributes, complete with a lesson, discussion questions and suggested next steps. See page 127.

Within the assessment format, each of the d12 will have a:

Goal: An ideal heart condition to pursue – This is a clarification of how each of the d12 attributes are individually expressed.

Assessment: Assessment questions will help you establish a baseline of where you are when you begin your discipleship journey and monitor your monthly growth goal in the areas of your ‘heart’ and ‘hand’.

• Heart: This measures your current heart’s ‘desire’ for each d12 attribute.

• Hand: This measures your current practical expression of that ‘desire.’ For each question, circle your current status and draw an arrow toward your ‘squared’ desired rating of where you desire to be one year from now. As a reminder, this is an ongoing journey of growth in your relationship with God. These two scores will be placed in your weekly dGroup guide.

Daily Journal Entry Sample 1/1/19

Genesis 1–3 Work EthicDescribe the theme of the Holy Spirit’s message to you.

Pray for dGroup (members and next steps)

Recite the Do Something Disciple Prayer

READ Slowly read the passage or chapters of your days reading, listening for the Holy Spirit to speak to you.

REFLECT Reflect and write what you believe God is saying to you.

Example: I noticed that when God created the heavens and the earth in Gen 1-2, God said what He was going to do, he did it to completion and then reviewed it. He stated that “it was good”.

RESPOND Pray this: “Holy Spirit, please reveal to my heart how this truth has already been applied in my life.” Write a prayer that outlines 1. How did you or could you have responded to that truth in the past and 2. How thankful you are for how God responded to your obedience or lack of obedience. This discipline reinforces what God is already doing in your life.

Example: Dear Lord, I’ve noticed that when I am clear on what I’m going to do, especially by writing it down, then do it, and review it to make sure that I did it right and with excellence, that the results are better. I also realize that I have more peace in the process. Thank you for teaching me to be patient enough to write out my plans for each day and then review them at the end of each task to ensure that I did it with excellence.

RELAY Complete this prayer: “Holy Spirit, guide me as I prayerfully prepare to share this truth with (insert name) or anyone that You want to bless with it.” Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading to who you could ‘serve’ with this insight.

Example: Jim, I was reading and/or praying today and God revealed to me that whenever I write down and plan what I’m going to do before I do it, things get done more efficiently and peacefully. I hope that this can help you as you plan your wedding, starting your business, redesigning our office etc.

d12 ResourcesN U R T U R E S A B U R D E N F O R T H E L O S T

Below are resources for 3 of the d12 attributes. We will share the remaining resources in our next journal.

d12: The heart of a Do Something Disciple has a burden for the lost.

Goal: Become comfortable and effective at sharing God’s love with people.

Who: All who are pursing God’s heart should have a heart that breaks for what breaks God’s heart. His heart is burdened for all to be saved therefore so should ours. 1 TIM 2:3

What: A burden or desire to share God’s love with people who do not know Him and his love personally. This should lead to a willingness to allow God to express His love through us in every form that His love has been shown to us. This includes but is not limited to kindness, patience, wisdom, joy and ultimately, giving people an opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior. 1 PETER 3:15

Why: Since the Father sent His Son to pay for the sins of the world, making salvation available to all, our heart should partner with the Father’s heart to ensure that everyone we know and meet can know that truth. JOHN 3:16-17

Where: God sent His Son to die for the sins of the world. 2 TIM 4:1

When: People are hurting and in need of salvation every minute of everyday and we need to be ready whenever God presents a need to us and gives us the opportunity to share his love. We need to realize that God sends us into situations that are designed to share His love. 2 TIM 4:1

How: Next step ideas:1. Identify 1 or 2 people whose salvation you will begin praying for: Lord, I love and and it burdens my heart to think that they would die without experiencing your forgiving and life transforming love. Please prepare my heart to share Your love with them and prepare their heart to receive it.

2. Learn the gospel ABC’s and practice with your accountability partners. See next page for more information.

GOSPEL A-B-C’S

Asking Jesus into your life is as easy as A-B-C

A - Father, I Admit that I am a sinner and that my sin has brought death and destruction into my life, my relationships with people, and my relationship with God. Romans 3:23, 6:23

B - I Believe that Jesus died for my sins and that His death paid the penalty for my sins. Romans 5:8

C - I Confess or agree that Jesus is Lord, that He died and rose from the dead, and is able to forgive me of my sins. Romans 10:9-10

Jesus, I trust that You love me and can hear my prayer. By faith, I ask You to please forgive me and fill me with the Holy Spirit. I surrender my life to You. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

If you understood that prayer and prayed to accept Jesus’ invitation into a relationship, text “SAVED” to 52525.

128

Page 129: d GROUP JOURNAL - Rock Church March 1903_v6... · 8 Journal Overview What is this journal for? This journal will help guide your daily devotional time with God, maintain accountability

How: Next step ideas (continued):3. Invite them to a Sunday service, special event such as Easter, Christmas or community service project.

4. Send a gospel presentation to your friends/family by texting “SHARE” to 52525. You can send it to yourself first to see what will be sent to them.

5. Develop and record your testimony through gospel central: www.gospelcentral.us

6 Questions you should be prepared for:

• What is salvation? The establishment of a faith-based relationship with Jesus Christ.

• How do you get it? Salvation is as simple as ABC (see previous page)

• Why should someone be saved? Saved means to be delivered or protected from something. You are being saved from being eternally separated from God and His eternal love. You are being saved from the penalty of your sin. To not be saved means to be condemned which is something people are generally interested in learning about.

• How did Jesus change your life? See gospel central for examples: www.gospelcentral.us

• If I do not have the gift of evangelism, should I share my faith? Jesus died and gave His life for everyone and the only way they will know is if those who know Him talk about Him.

• What makes Jesus and Christianity different from other faiths? There are two major differences between Christianity and others faiths. First, a risen Savior, who actually died for the sins of the people who worships Him. Second, an opportunity to have a relationship based on love with your Savior. No other faith offers those two eternal benefits.

6. Determine your next steps by circling options above (1-5) or write additional ways to grow your burden for the lost. Record your next steps in your dGroup meeting guide and share with your group:

d12: The heart of a Do Something Disciple values being guided by the Word of God.

Goal: To place a high value and establish a discipline to hear God’s voice and direction from our daily bible reading.

Who: Jesus said that we prove our love for God by obeying His commandments. We can only do that by reading His Word. JOHN 14:15

What: It is critical, as a disciple, to receive direction and counsel from reading the bible every day. These insights will be recorded in your journal for future counsel and direction.

Why: Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, God gave us his Word, in order to teach, correct, and guide us through every aspect of our lives. 2 TIM 3:16, HEB 4:12

Where: God sent His Son to die for the sins of the world. 2 TIM 4:1

How: Next step ideas:1. Establish a daily bible reading schedule to guide your daily reading. Text “DISCIPLE” to 52525 to sign up for our bible reading plan.

2. Establish a time and place to read while using this journal.

3. Practice the Read, Reflect, Respond and Relay model of journaling outlined on page 17 and discuss weekly in your dGroup.

• Read: Each day, write the date and bible address of your reading

• Reflect: Journal what you believe God is saying to you

• Respond: Write down one action step that you believe you should take based on what you heard God say.

• Relay: Share what you learned or heard from God with someone else

4. Determine your next steps by circling options above (1-3) or write additional ways to grow in being guided by God’s Word. Record your next steps in your dGroup meeting guide and share with your group:

d12: The heart of a Do Something Disciple passionately worships God.

Goal: Be a living symbol of passionate worship of God.

Who: Everything that has breath needs to praise the Lord. PSALM 150:6

What: A response of respect when the nature of God is revealed. You can respond in song, shout, enthusiasm, humility, clapping, obeying, submitting in service, give gifts etc.

Why: God is worthy of all praise of all creation. He is holy, perfect, loving, the omnipotent creator of all things.

Where: All of creation praises God and we should represent our respect for God everywhere we go. PSALM 19:1-13

How: Next step ideas:1. Give praise through one worship song each day.

2. Be fully engaged in the ‘complete’ worship set at church each week. In other words, be in your seat before the first worship song starts.

3. Lift your hands in praise during worship at church and home.

4. Worship ‘at the stage’ in church.

5. Identify one artist whose worship music you will include in your playlist.

6. Listen to one worship song during your dGroup session.

7. Determine your next steps by circling options above (1-6) or write additional ways to grow in worshipping God passionately. Record your next steps in your dGroup meeting guide and share with your group:

How to Memorize Scripture1. Repeat the scripture several times aloud. As you read, ask God to reveal to you what he wants you to understand about this specific verse.

2. Rewrite the verse several times. As you write it, think about the meaning of the words. Notice the breakdown of the verse by section.

3. Divide the memory verse into section.Memorize the first section, then add the second, continuing with this pattern until you learn the entire verse.

4. Continue reviewing the verse, keeping with this format. As you do so, think about how it applies to your life and current situation.

5. Pray to God for wisdom and clarity. The most important part of the process is allowing your heart and mind to be aligned, thus welcoming the ability for God to transform your situation.

6. Review each verse over the next four weeks. This will create a habit where memorizing scripture easily becomes a part of your everyday routine.
