AEC Prize Giving

Vuleka school is sad to say goodbye to two senior members of its staff at the end of 2017. Janet Saner’s value, as Director of Finance and Fundraising, has been enormous to the whole organisation and Mike Hood, at SSB since the very beginning and Deputy for the last three years, has had a profound impact on students and staff alike. We join the Vuleka community in wishing Janet well in her retirement and Mike the very best at Parktown Girls where he is taking up an excellent opportunity. Sandy Greybe has already started at Vuleka central office so as to ensure a smooth handover of financial matters, and the process to appoint a Deputy Head at SSB is well advanced.

SSB students achieved great success at the annual AEC prize-

giving. We won most of the academic prizes and Benefactor

Mokoena won the prize for the best boy student. Mrs Mel

Sharland (CEO of the Vuleka School) summed it up: “VSSB

cleaned up!” Well done to our AEC students!

The Grade 12 final exams started on 18 October with AP Maths and then English on 24 October.

Hurry and Apply to SSB for 2018

The teachers at SSB who have been at the school the longest are Mr Mike Hood, Mrs Anneke Meintjes and Mrs Lizbé Pieters. Mr Hood and Mrs Meintjes have both taught at

SSB for 21 years, while Mrs Pieters has taught here for one year less!

Poet, writer and speaker, David Whyte, addressed a fundraiser event at the FNB auditorium, Sandton, on Thursday 26 October and held a poetry workshop the next day which the SSB English staff were privileged to attend. David Whyte has written seven volumes of poetry and four books of prose. He has also written for newspapers including The Huffington Post and The Observer. He leads group poetry and walking journeys regularly in Ireland, England and Italy. He has worked with companies such as Boeing, AT&T, NASA, Toyota, The Royal Air Force and the Arthur Ander-sen accountancy group.

The Vuleka schools are strongly marketing at the moment. SSB is no exception – some of you might have seen our ad displayed on street-light poles in and around Randburg! We would like to increase our enrolment and, as always, you (our pupils, parents and staff) are our best marketers – please talk to your friends and colleagues about SSB .

We welcome all such applications for 2018 on 011 787 7290 There are spaces at other Vuleka campuses as well. Please enquire at the Vuleka Central Office 011 477 6917 for spaces in our early learning centres, primary schools, the boys’ school and the assisted learning centre.

Payment by Stop Order from 2018

Vuleka schools really do offer affordable, high quality education; but we can only

do so if monthly school fees are paid on time. In order to help both parents and

SSB in this respect, it will be compulsory from January 2018 for parents to sign a

Stop Order for their monthly school fees.

End of Year Exams Exams for all grades will begin on Wednesday 1 No-

vember and, for most grades, will continue until Friday 24 November according to the timetable which all stu-

dents already have. From Thursday 2 November, school will close everyday at 12h30.

94.7 Cycle Challenge 2017 Just under a month to go to the 94.7 cycle challenge! Our Monday 16 October school assembly had the privilege of meeting seven local cyclists whose participation in the 94.7 cycle challenge 2017 is raising funds directly for Vuleka SSB. A really big thank you from the whole school to our sponsorship riders!

Furniture Additions for our Garden Five new garden bench-and-tables were delivered to SSB recently. They provide a pleasing addition to our current facilities for relaxation in the

garden and doing homework in the afternoons.

Peer Counsellor Hat’s Day Friday 13 October was Hats Day at SSB! The school’s Peer Counsellors

arranged for students (and staff) to donate R5 so that they could wear civvies and express themselves by wearing a unique hat of their choice . It’s pleasing to note that R1 000.00 was raised by the enthusi-

asm of all those who wore hats and bought muffins! Well done and thank you to the Peer Counsellors and all who took part! Funds have

been donated to Hospice Houghton.

Bring Your Own Lunches!! As from Wednesday 1 November, the Tuck Shop will not be pur-chasing any new stock, so that all items it sells will gradually run out. Everyone who buys from the Tuck Shop should take note of this and should be prepared to make an alternative arrangement for food, such as bringing their own lunch to school.

National Science Olympiad 2017

The 2017 National Science Olympiad took place on the 1st and 3rd of August. 28 students represented Vuleka SSB in written examinations in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Natural Sciences – all received certificates of participation, and the following make SSB really proud by achieving over 60%: Alice Mama-bolo, Nicholas Banda, Shaun Rathelele, Rochel Masinga, Michelle Madzikanda and Achimile Qumbelo.

Stick to it! Persevering in a task through

to completion; remaining focused.

Persisting

Grade 8 Camp All Grade 8s take careful note! 29 November to 1 December on the Vaal River at Maraneman! Don’t miss the bus!

Not enough sign-ups for History Please note that History from Grade 10 will

only be offered in 2018 if more students indi-

cate they wish to take the subject.

SSB introduces tablets next year SSB is excited to announce the introduction of

tablet computing – 30 tablet computers will be

operative at SSB as from the beginning of 2018!
