    DMAP

With an objective to make Indian Handicraft Sector designoriented & innovative in international & national niche markets,

NIFT Bhubaneswaris going to provide industry oriented design training

to the fresh design graduates from leading design Institutions.

The entire training shall be under supervision & guidance of International

/National designers and linkages with trade, industry and clusters. These

designers after orientation shall be deployed with the industry and

clusters to work with exporters and SHGs to provide complete

awareness for creating an environment conducive to changing design

pattern, market linkages, research and development of new set of

    designs.

Presently there is lack of industry oriented design skills in the country.

No provisions for on board industry training to fresh graduates in the

handicraft sector like other sectors under the supervision of experienced

    international & national designers.

No linkage between handicraft exporters & design institutions.

No design institution provides structured handicraft oriented design

    apprenticeship to the design students.

No specific course curriculum at any design institute for handicraft cluster

    that is exporter oriented.

Designers do not prefer to choose hard goods as their career options

due to non familiarity with the clusters/ products/techniques/ medium.

The sector is not able to employ the designers either full time or part timedue to lack of accessibility.

Overseas importers do not categorize the handicrafts sector as design

driven in comparison to China,Philippines,Thailand,Indonesia, Vietnam

    etc.

The Handicraft Exporters, due to the lack of design skills normally do not

employ the designers either full time or part time.Today the markets,

both the niche & growing Indian retail markets as well as the overseas

markets are completely customer driven country wise age group wise

    and wealth wise.

In the present scenario the usage of the design & product development

services on constant basis by Indian handicraft exporters or the craft

persons is negligible or in a nascent stage. One of the major reasonsenvisaged is the lack of availability of new set of design skills and

designs in the industry. The reason for the same is that there is no

continuous inflow of the new designs, patterns, weaves, technologies and

research in the handicraft sector. The handicraft sector is almost

stagnant in absence of targeted research and development.

DMAP is an intensive exposure and immersion program for freshgraduates from design universities design students in the industrial

design industry that focuses on handicrafts.

DMAP aimsto provide design students with :- Industry Exposure.

    INITIATIVES TAKEN FOR HANDICRAFT INDUSTRY

The office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) is the nodal agency in

the Government of India for craft and artisan-based activities. It assists in thedevelopment, marketing and export of handicrafts, and the promotion of craftforms and skills. The assistance is in the form of technical and financialsupport, including in the form of schematic interventions implemented throughits field offices. The office supports the artisans and the sector through differentdevelopmental schemes through its six regional offices at Mumbai, Kolkata,Lucknow, Chennai, Guwahati and New Delhi and its 62 fields units. Thehandicrafts sector plays a significant and important role in the country'seconomy. It provides employment to a vast segment of craft persons in ruraland semi urban areas and generates substantial foreign exchange for thecountry, while preserving its cultural heritage.

Handicrafts have great potential, as they hold the key to sustain not only theexisting millions of artisans spread over the length and breadth of the country, but also for the increasingly large number of new entrants in the craft activity.

Presently, handicrafts contribute substantially employment generation andexports. The handicraft sector has, however, suffered due to its beingunorganized, with the additional constraints of lack of education, low capital, poor exposure to new technologies, absence of market intelligence, and apoor institutional framework. Inspite of these constraints, the sector haswitnessed a significant growth of 3 percent annually and efforts are beingaugmented during the present plan on the core issues for the development ofthe sector.
