The Jesus Story Year, 2019–2020

Our sermons for the remainder of 2019 and into 2020 will focus on the story of Jesus. In “Walking Backwards from Emmaus: Jesus in the Old Testament,” we’ll begin with the creation story and work our way through

the prophets to learn how the Old Testament witnesses to Christ. Starting in January, we’ll walk forwards from Emmaus, exploring how

the gospels and epistles testify to the king who calls us as his particular people in the world.

Sept. 29 – Christ and Abraham’s SonOct. 6 – Christ and the Rejected

“Life’s Healthy Choices” small group study: AUMC is launching a 10-week Sunday evening small group study, “Life’s Healthy Choices,” beginning Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in Hughes Hall. The study uses Celebrate Recovery’s eight principles, which are based on the Beatitudes. It is an approach to bringing into your life the transformative and healing power of Jesus Christ, God the Father and the Holy Spirit and freeing yourself from hurts, hang-ups and harmful habits. Harry Day, Teresa Beyer, Jerry Bruce and Fred Carns will be the hosts for the meetings, which will typically last 1-½–2 hours. At the orientation meeting on Sept. 8, participants will receive study materials (covered by a $30 fee), view a video for the first study session on Sept. 15, and break into women’s and men’s small groups. Contact Harry Day, 703 298-0972 or [email protected], or Teresa Beyer, 301-221-8321 or [email protected], for details. Small group sizes are limited, so please let us know of your interest ASAP.

Disaster response? We have a team for

that. Have you ever wondered how you

might help those in need after a tornado or hurricane? Join AUMC’s Disaster Response Team, comprised of members trained by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to help clean up disaster sites once they are secured. If you are interested in being a part of the team (which requires a day of training), contact Jay Morris, [email protected]. We are also looking for a team coordinator to organize and recruit new members, maintain our inventory of equipment and serve as the point of contact with the United Methodist Church’s disaster response liaison.
