JUNE2014 Hopefully everyone out there in the Land of D14 is en-

joying our 2014 racing season so far. If you had any doubts, surely the heat and humidity reminds you that summer is defi nitely on the horizon . . . and yet, doesn't it seem like it’s going by SO very quickly too? With the heat comes certain risks, especially on race day. Remember to keep yourself properly hydrated. Drink plenty of H2O (at least half your body weight in ounces) Need an extra burst of energy? Instead of picking up a caff einated, sugar laden energy drink, try some healthy Ningxia Nitro (see inside back page) to sustain your energy levels naturally. Your body will thank you! BIG HUGS as always to this month's contributors. Where would we be without you!?!? THANK YOU for giv-ing of your ti me so generously to write about your division and helping spread the word about District 14.

FOR ROUND 2 ATPOLKA DOTS M/C

POLKA DOTS MOTORCYCLE CLUB (Midland, MI) | April 27Story by Steve Baginski | Photos as noted

We are on our way to another non stop summer fi lled with some great Vintage Racing! We pulled into Polka Dots for round two and the riders fl ocked even with the cold temps. The track had a few changes but was prepped perfectly and with the threat of rain, most of the other classes were a litt le smaller than usual. For those of us that showed up, we were treated awesome and were able to race rain free. Most of us raced with sweatshirts, but we do live in Michigan! The vintage riders didn’t care as this is a favorite for most. There were even quite a few fi rst ti me racers that were very happy with the track and facility. I for one am looking forward to returning in the fall.

The Iron Man class was fi rst off with a total of thirteen racers. By the end of lap one it was Al Doneth out front with Ian Lee a close second. Kevin Stone came next just ahead of returning Cory Sutherland and then Mike Laczko. Kris Gillett was falling back a bit just ahead of Rick Stone and a litt le farther back to Bill Belote. Jeff Doneth and Brian Briggs were at it again with Brian Mcmahan having a great view of the batt le. Mike Poirier was out but was wishing he was on his newer 125 instead! As they came around for lap three, Al had a nice lead with Laczko now in second as we were missing Ian. Kevin was also a few spots back with his goggles off just behind Bill. I spott ed Ian a litt le later in the race as he was pulling off the track due to severe knee pain from the fi rst race crash at Portland. Kris was also off the radar and then was seen pushing his bike back to the truck. Briggs had also taken over the positi on from Jeff as Mcmahan was also gaining ground on Jeff . Al, Laczko and Cory were the only three not to be lapped by the other classes and all got an extra lap. Al was out front and slowed just a bit allowing Laczko to close the gap at the fi nish to less than fi ve seconds. Cory was a ways back but had no reason to push on the last lap. Rick would hold onto fourth as Bill took home fi ft h. Kevin looked to be in some pain and I believe went down dropping him to sixth. Briggs rode hard to seventh and Jeff was able to hold off the hard charge of Mcmahan for eighth. Poirier sat out his last lap and cruised across in tenth. Moto two had the same top riders out front with Laczko grabbing the holeshot followed closely by Al and then Kevin. Rick was next just ahead of Kris, on Ricks backup bike, and then Cory. Randy Stone was able to get started for moto two and led Jeff , Bill, Mike and Briggs through turn two. Mcmahan made it off the start but was barely able to make it through turn one before his bike quit. At the start of lap two, Al had a few second lead over Mike with the same size gap back to Cory and Kris. Kevin was next just ahead of Rick and the charging Randy. Bill had a nice lead over Briggs and then Jeff and then a few more seconds back

June 2014 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News 7 to Poirier. With the white flag waiving, the biggest change in the standings was when I once again saw Kris pushing his bike back to the pits after running a solid third. At the finish it was Al with another 1-1 as Laczko went 2-2 with Cory rounding out the podium with a 3-3. Rick kept the consistency going with a 4-4 and Kevin stopped it going 6-5 for fifth. Bill went a few spots back with a 5-7 for sixth as Briggs took seventh with a 7-8. Jeff was close all moto but could only manage an 8-9 for eighth while Poirier went 10-10 for ninth. Randy rode great in the second moto and is getting used to his new bike but his first moto dns dropped him to tenth. Mcmahan never could get his bike refired after the start of moto two and put him back to eleventh as Kris had worse luck, breaking two bikes and placing him in twelfth. Ian didn’t even try to start moto two and decided it was time to take a break and head to the Doctor on Monday for some x-rays.

The Evolution guys were next with Bryan Hoeldtke taking the holeshot. George Mekjian was next followed by Mike Mason, Ray and Derek Brooks with Tom Lee sneaking between Doug Chaffee and Justin Hess just ahead of Randy Stone. As the dust cleared the second turn, Ray was remounting after a spin out. He got going just as Mark Havalda came into the turn as he had some troubles as the gate fell. At the start of lap two, Bryan was on the gas and looking to defend his #1 out front. Mike was doing his best to keep him in sight in second as he just passed George. Ray was already up to fourth as Doug held onto fifth just ahead of Tom. Randy made some moves up to seventh as Derek was slipping back. Justin seemed to be having some bike issues as Mark was gaining ground as the two 125cc machines. Bryan continued to motor away out front but Mike was riding great and took an easy second. Ray was on the gas and could have challenged for the lead without his second turn crash. Doug took over fourth when George’s bike started acting up in the back part of the track. Tom rode to a solid fifth as Derek had to fight Randy for sixth the entire last lap. Justin went back and forth with Derek in the middle of the race but eventually slid back to eighth. Mark had a bad start and caught Justin at the end of the race but still finished ninth. Mike got the early jump in moto two but it was Ray going through turn one first with Bryan and George sweeping wide. Tom and Mark were wheel to wheel as Randy and Doug were up the inside followed by Derek. As the race got under way, Bryan once again set the pace out front. Mike was riding harder and was getting pressure from Ray in third. George seemed to have his moto one bike issue figured out and was all over Ray. Tom was a few seconds back with Doug on his heels. Randy was looking smooth as he was pulling away from Mark. As the laps clicked off, Bryan kept adding to his lead and took another 1-1. Mike rode very well and was a solid 2-2. Ray fought hard and was close all moto long but could not make the move

for second and had to settle for third. Tom was smooth all day and was rewarded with his 5-5 for fourth overall. Doug kept Tom in sight the entire race finishing sixth for fifth overall just ahead of the charging Randy in seventh. Mark had a better moto two start, rode hard and took advantage of some other rider’s misfortune and finished 9-8 for seventh. George rode to where he should be in the second moto in fourth but his first moto dnf dropped him to eighth. Derek had issues of his own in moto two placing him back in ninth overall. Justin had problems as well and couldn’t even make the start of moto two.

The Innovation and Transition racers had the track to themselves. When the gate fell it was a drag race between me and Mike Poirier to the second turn. He chopped a second early and I took the inside line through turn one. Paul Gillett was a close third with Mike Laczko in fourth. George Mekjian, Tom Lee and the first Transition rider of Hunter Hagerl were next followed by Ryan Beader and Keri Laczko. Tom Claerhout was last through turn one as he was trying to help Brad Bolzman off the start with no luck. The track was fast and flowing and I was able to put a little gap on Paul in second place. Claerhout was on the gas and up to third overall by the start of lap two as Laczko was up to third with Poirier slipping to fourth. Lee was in fifth with Ryan in sixth. Hunter was riding well and holding onto second as George was in third. The race seemed to go quickly and before I knew it, the checkered was waiving and I had a nice lead over Paul in second. Laczko was not far behind in third and a disappointed and tired Poirier crossed in fourth. Tom took fifth as Ryan finished sixth as the lone 125cc racer. Claerhout topped the Transition riders even though he had to baby his bike the last few laps as it was starting to make some strange noises. Hunter held off the last lap charge from George for second as Keri

Rights, Riding, Racing. You see it on every District 14 or AMA fl ier, poster or banner. You see this statement every ti me you sign up for a race.

Every ti me you open your District 14 newspaper or your AMA Magazine Every ti me you get on the website to check what is happening in your discipline of racing.

However, what does it really Mean?

Some people will disagree with me, but the order, of these words, are actually in the correct order. “Rights, Riding, Racing!”

RightsThe AMA has always been a big proponent for motorcycling rights! From coast to coast, they lobby for the rights of all motorcyclists no matt er what type of riding you do, road, off road, ATV.

Racing or pleasure riding, the AMA has been there every step of the way, fi ghti ng locally and more so, on the Federal level to help allow all of us the right to ride since 1924!

Without the AMA off road, riding on federal land would be almost non-existent!

They fi ght the organizati ons that would like to see all lands free of motorized recreati on!

They helped ABATE fi ght for the right to ride without helmets although they admit they would rather see you wear one.

The AMA helped the district get involved in land use and riding issues, helping Dick Ranney and I get started in the politi cal process. We have evolved to the point that they ask about Michigan but know we have it handled at the State Capitol!

They have for 90 years fought for your “Right to Ride and Race!

RidingI do not know many people that get on a motorcycle or ATV and go racing without fi rst learning how to ride!

A lot of us started in a backyard, local track, the open trails of the State of Michigan, with our families or friends.

We learned how to ride, right or wrong. We rode unti l someone, a friend, a family member, another rider met on the trail, or a local racer, talked to us about racing! They told us about this motorcycle/ATV racing, took us under their wing a litt le and helped us get started.

Visions by Thomas Dunn, 2014 District 14 President

Even aft er the racing begins, we all ride generally much more then we race.

It is a life style, it is a privilege, it is our right!

RacingIt all comes down to this!

This is the reason that the word “Racing” is last. Without the “Rights and Riding,” there would not be the Racing!

The AMA and District 14 take great pride in the races, racers, race tracks, promoters and clubs! Off ering our riders the very best of whatever type of racing you personally like.

Our Motocross Promoters and tracks are some of the best in the country.

Some names you see at he pro level include Nick Wey and Broc Tickle, of the AMA Supercross series, getti ng their starts here on Michigan Tracks.

Women’s rider Sara Whitmore, Pro AMA Motocross racer!

AMA Hall of Fame Rex Stanton quietly amassed 37 pro wins, started in District 14 Race tracks!

The Flat track world at one ti me all

seem to come from Flint Michigan Area, and sti ll holds some of the top racing in the country!

The off road world has seen the likes of several members of the Keen Families, Bersano’s, Gallt’s, top 10 nati onally ranked Enduro riders at one point of their careers. Al Randt, Enduro rider and entrepreneur, turned promoter of the AMA Nati onal Enduro Series with the Nati onal Enduro Promoti on Group (NEPG), to name only a few.

With the AMA and District sancti oning the races and the organizers providing the guide lines and rules to keep the racing fair. The liability insurance and legal help if problems arise. With risk management training, to help teach us to do as much as we can to keep from putti ng our organizers in jeopardy of legal troubles.

The AMA and the District have been there all the way, giving all of us the opportunity to race, the opportunity for our children to race, the opportunity for all future generati ons to have the opportuniti es that we have all enjoyed!

Rights, Riding, Racing.

See ya at the Races!Thomas Dunn

History Of the Tech-Care Mailman Marathon!

story and photos submitted by Heather Bowman

BAJA ACRES (Millington, MI) | May 24

Eight years in the making! This past weekend, Saturday May 24th was the 8th annual Tech-Care Mailman Marathon. Every year Memorial Day weekend, Tech-Care and Baja Acres team up to have a foot race around the entire Baja Acres motocross track! For the $5 entry fee and the free Tech-Care Mailman shirt, who doesn’t want to do it!?

All the entries are divided into three different age classes – 15 years and under, 16-37 years old, and 38 and over! The largest class is always the 15 and under BUT that competition is stiff in all the classes. That might be because of the cash purse waiting for the Top 3 at the end of it!! First place receives $100, second $50, and third $25.

Tech-Care Suspension always enjoys doing this event because it gets the whole family involved! Not everyone knows the background of the race. Long time Baja employee, Mark McCarthy… “THE Mailman” was in training for upcoming qualifiers! So Mailman decided what not a better way to train than to run the rough terrain of Baja Acres after events. So in spirit of upholding tradition, year after year we continue the run! And year in and year out Mailman, after he is done working all day, goes out there and he runs!

The Mailman Marathon is a prime example as to why the motocross community is just that, a tight motocross family! The support for all the runners and all different ages… is an amazing thing to be a part of and Tech-Care is looking forward to many more Tech-Care Mailman Marathons at Baja Acres!

TOLEDO TRAIL RIDERS (Swanton, OH) | May 25Story by Matt Bucher | photos by Jeff Balla

Nearly four years after an EF2 Tornado ripped through the Maumee State Forest APV area in Swanton, Ohio (Ohio designates APV instead of ORV), the Toledo Trail Riders hosted a charity event for the Hannah’s Socks organization on Sunday May 25th. The event was called “Laps for Hannah’s Socks” and was billed as an off-road event supporting those less fortunate.

APV riders from Ohio and Michigan came out in support of the Hannah’s Socks organization during the event on May 25th. Approximately $1,400 was raised and a host of socks was graciously donated. Toledo Trail Rider’s Fundraising Manager Zach Park says “About four years ago a tornado came through the Maumee State Forest APV area and almost destroyed it. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources had to do a major salvage effort as the APV trails were shut down for approximately 6 months. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. We’re out here showing that there is a bigger picture here, that there are people in our country and across the world who do not have much of anything” says Park.

During the “Laps for Hannah’s Socks” charity event, Championship Powersports displayed a couple of new Husqvarna dirtbikes. There was also a food vendor on hand that specialized in BBQ pulled pork, brats, and hot dogs for APV riders that maybe worked up an appetite throughout the day. Toledo Trail Rider Board Member and General Manager for Championship Powersports Jim Miller said “This is the first of its kind of event here at the Maumee State Forest. We’re real proud to bring a couple Huskys here to let people get a chance to see them, as they are an all new off-road option in the marketplace. Hopefully this event will open some doors for the Toledo Trail Riders and future endeavors at the Maumee State Forest APV area” says Miller.

One of the main attractions for APV riders that attended was the chance to win raffle prizes. If you attended the event and donated either cash, and or a package of socks, you were automatically entered into a drawing with a chance to win prizes. Approximately $2,000 in donated prizes was given out during the event in the form of sponsorship. Prizes ranged anywhere from helmets to t-shirts, to tires to tools and came from local powersport dealers. Even a couple of on-road shops got involved. “We are absolutely amazed at the support that came from local businesses to generate some really fantastic raffle prizes. We want to thank the local support from the Elizabeth Scott Community, Co-Man Portable Toilettes, Homewood Printing and Mailing, Championship Powersports, PR Racing Engines, Honda East Toledo, AfterHoursCycle by PlusOnePerformance, Jazz Motorsports, Motorcycle Solutions LLC, Napoleon Harley-Davidson, and Badbrush Design. This whole event wouldn’t be possible without these great businesses” says Matt Bucher, President and Founder of the Toledo Trail Riders.

The Toledo Trail Riders is currently awaiting approval from the IRS for a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit filing status. “We should know by summers end if we will be an official Non-Profit” says Jeffrey Taylor, Toledo Trail Riders IT Manager and Board of Director. “Once we get approval we should be able to do some really neat things for the local off-road riding community. Toledo Trail Riders are gaining momentum and have built up a pretty good reputation for getting things done in Ohio, in a very a short period of time. We are very excited for the future” says Taylor.

enjoyed her fi rst race back fi nishing fourth. The second moto start was a repeat for me and Poirier and unfortunately for him, he chopped a tad too early once again. George was pushed a litt le wide by Paul as him and Laczko came up the inside. Brad was able to make the start this ti me as he came through turn one with Hunter and Lee. Ryan and Claerhout were next with Keri just behind them. By the start of the second lap, I had a nice lead with Paul once again holding down second. Poirier was running third and looking to redeem his fi rst moto fourth. Claerhout had taken over the top spot in his class with Brad a close second. George and Laczko were fi ghti ng for fourth with Lee just ahead of Hunter. Ryan was running sixth Inno as Keri was a few seconds behind him. During the race Brad and Claerhout switched spots a few ti mes as Laczko pulled a litt le gap on George. By the end of the race, I had another nice lead over Paul who rode great to a solid 2-2. Poirier put his head down and fi nished third to round out the podium. Laczko had him in his sights but just could not make the push needed and ended up fourth. Tom was once again looking good but could only manage a fi ft h while Ryan ended up sixth. For the Transiti on riders, it was Claerhout eventually pulling a small lead and taking the win over Brad. But unfortunately he would end up in last with his fi rst moto dnf. George was a consistent 3-3 for

second overall as Hunter fi nished in third with his 2-4 moto scores. Keri took home fi ft h with her 4-5 scores.

Once again this season is starti ng to pick up momentum and will be half over before I even know it. We are a few races in already and I will be posti ng the points aft er a few more. Our next few races are already in the books and our next race will be at Batt le Creek on June 8th. Aft er that we head to Freelin MX on the 22nd and then we make our return to Valley MX for the Fourth of July weekend. I haven’t been there in quite a few years and can’t wait to head back there. For any other informati on please check out www.michiganvintagemotocross.com. Thanks for checking in and I hope to see you at the races.

June 2014 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News 13

Ask five riders that question you’re apt to get seven different answers. What we’re going to do here is lay out the principles of a steering damper on your off-road bike- be it a flattracker, moto bike or woods weapon – and then you can decide if a steering damper is for you.

Operating Conditions – the three disciplines mentioned place different demands on a steering damper. Damping requirements change with steer angle (how far the bars are turned to one side or another) and the speed of the input (related to

bike speed, but more closely tied to the type of track disturbance encountered).

On a dirt track machine a damper is called on to quell high-speed, high steer angle oscillations when the bike is pitched into a corner (think ‘tank slapper’) as well as low-speed, on-center oscillations that may occur on the straights. Most dirt track bikes that are fitted with a damper use a frame mounted piston-type damper.

Headshake is the bane of motocrossers, but it’s a trade-off virtually inherent in the modern frame geometries that generate laser sharp steering. Dampers are designed to knock down the high-speed bar wiggle that can occur near center. In the case of the Honda HPSD system 15 clicks of adjustment allow the rider to tune the level of damping as the bars move away from center. Damping is reduced as the bars return toward center. Ride Engineering offers triple clamps with damper mounts that allow riders of other brands (Suzuki riders take note!) to use the HPSD damper.

Lurking behind the front numberplate is an adjustable steering damper

Hare scrambles and enduro bikes are expected to perform over a wide variety of terrain, from high speed fire roads to lock-to-lock woods. Damping demands are similar to a motocrosser, where little on-center damping is desired, but a quick ramp up is required if the front wheel contacts a rock or a handlebar clips a tree. At the extreme angles, where the handlebars are turned to ‘bend’ through narrow trees, it’s desirable to have minimal damping.

The Beane ReportStory and photos by Steve Beane

Steering Damper 101 – Should You Have One on Your Off-Road Bike?

Off-road dampers have traditionally taken the form of a rotary damper where vanes push fluid through channels that are restricted to create damping. The damper is mounted to the upper triple clamp either above or below the handlebar, centered over the steering tube nut. A torque arm connects to a post attached to a clamp on the

steering head. Additional adjustments in some systems allow the rider to tune damping resistance back toward center, as well as the angle off-center at which to reduce damping force, and the level of that damping force.

A Fastway System 5 damper has all the bells and whistles

Always looking to improve performance, Ohlins has developed a different take on the rotary damper, engineering a system that is sandwiched below the handlebar and uses a bike-specific upper bearing race with integral post to react torque. The S2.1 damper has adjustments for damping level as well as Return to Center damping. The system is pressurized much like a twin-chamber fork, and damping levels are more consistent because fluid flows only in one direction.

Decisions, decisions – In some cases, there is no doubt that a damper is required on your bike – if your dirttracker leaves two tracks going down a straight, or you get so much headshake decelerating for turns on your MXer that you skip the second moto and head to Mass, or if you make a habit of clipping trees at speed and find yourself pin-balling down the trail. What’s left then is to determine what you can afford – bolt-on dampers can crest the $700 mark, not counting labor to install – and what style fits your bike and operating conditions best.

How did you get into riding and racing?

My dad was into racing for 35-40 years, and it rubbed off on me. At an ice race in Bentley, he gave me 20 bucks to enter the rubber class and said if I didn't like it he wouldn't ask me to ride it again, Been doing it ever since.

Dad raced rubber class for 30 years on Lake St. Clair, against the Dodd boys and such, I watched them my whole life. It was very important to how I ride today.

What's the most important lesson you took from all those years watching?

The biggest thing I remember is that it was all about fi nesse. The last 10 years it's gott en a lot faster due to track and bike setup. I think probably the biggest factor contributi ng to that is the ti re quality and bikes are specifi cally set up for rubber

racing only. The future looks great too, there's lots of younger riders getti ng into it, and they are fast and getti ng faster.

What was your fi rst-ever win in any form of motorsports?

Dirt track at Lucky Thumb TT 1999. Took me two years from when I started.

Do you remember how you felt?

I was totally stoked, it took me couple years to get there, all the hard work pays off and to be number one that day felt awesome. My dad's always there and sti ll does all my setup to this day. Generally anyti me I'm racing, he is there and he enjoyed the win as much as me.

Have any bad crashes?

Ummm yeah, all kinds but the one that stands out was on my 21st birthday, when I high sided the big sweeper at lucky thumb on my TT 600, bruised kidney, bruised liver, lung, broke couple ribs, and plenty of road rash.

What's the hardest thing about Rubber Solo Ice racing?

Slowing your thought pattern down is key. On dirt you can pretty much go as fast as you want, on ice you have to

Ice RaceChairman

ReportBy Jeremiah Sherman, Ice Race Chairman

Happy summer to all, it seems I have as much to do with ice racing in summer as I do in the winter. I'm spending ti me talking with potenti al sponsors and other organizers this summer. There are some new groups that want to join our schedule, more to follow on that next month.

As Chairmen, I need to name a secretary/treasurer as soon as possible, and I'm looking for someone who has some extra ti me available and has the ability to balance a checkbook. We will set you up with the other treasurers to learn what is needed, but it is not that much work.

I would also like to enlist Rider Reps for our division. These person would be responsible for/represent the riders of there discipline in ice racing. (i.e. Quad Rep, Rubber Tire Rep, Studded Solo Rep, Women's Riders Rep, Youth Riders Rep). This is to establish a chain of distributi on of informati on to and from myself and the race organizers themselves. We will have weekly meeti ngs before or during each ice event during the season that will be short and sweet. During the off season I will be hoping you will att end other types of event and promote ice racing, and pass out fl yers to potenti al future ice racers. Most importantly, I will need you to att end the Annual District Meeti ng in December. Rider input is needed at this meeti ng and we need you there. This system will enlist more riders to get involved in the promoti on of our sport and ulti mately lead to higher numbers at the events.

Happy Summer, see you all soon.

make the bike make traction. The dirt track kids are getting trained on the short tracks, learning where your body should be and how to steer and handle and make the bike hook up. Even on dirt you cant just nail the throttle, you have to hook the bike up, and these young guys are learning fast about that.

Why do you race Ice race, and what is it that drives you to go so far in this sport?

Well I love ice racing, its a riot, but I also use the ice season as prep for dirt. I really want to keep it goin, a lot of the old guys I watched are almost gone. I do everything I can to get kids on my rubber bikes so they can see how much fun it is, and its cheap! A 600 dollar bike, 100 bucks in tires, and couple small modifications and your racing with everyone in the pack.

Tell us about setting up a rubber tire ice bike.

What we do is we cut the steering neck and change the rake. Stock xr 250 has a great rake and set it 24 degrees. Also, we want the axle distance of

52 to 53.5 inches. So when we change the rake, we add and inch or two to the swingarm. So then we make them so the swingarms are adjustable so you can add a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Reason for this is so if you go to a big track you can adjust and it wont turn to fast.

How do you come up with thse numbers?

We used dirt track numbers, and lots of trial and error.

Who is your toughest competition?

Cory Derosiers, ever since I sold him the bike that he has been beating me on. The last 2 years he has gotten faster and faster.

Shout outs and thanks?

Mom and Dad, the Desrosiers family, Tab and Tony, have helped me out so much, as well as the ice race organizers keeping the sport alive.

So we have talked about classs modification, making

the 251cc Open rubber solo to 91 cc open to allow the A and B classes a second entry, your thoughts?

Well If I were president, I would make a 0-125cc class instead, and keep the other classes as they are. There's a lot of young guys on smaller bikes in the B class that could make a class.

If you could make your dream track, what kind of track would you build?

If I had the property I would have all tracks I had room for, TT, ST, HM, MX, All of them.

What do you think about when your out front alone.

Not falling down, always try to do the same thing from beginning to the end, stay consistent. Consistency is key for rubber ti re racing.

What's a TV show you're into right now?

Duck Dynasty

What's the last movie you saw and was it any good?

2014 RAD DAD NATIONAL ENDURORace Report by Talon Soenksen

For round 3 of the Nati onal Enduro Series we made it down to West Point TN Saturday aft ernoon in ti me for the my mom to race the family , which she took fi rst in the women's class. On Sunday morning we got ready for the race. When we signed up we were 3 days late pre-registering and ended up on row 82. Aft er the fun and technical transfer to the fi rst test I focused on the race ahead. The fi rst test went well except for my dad crashing about 3 turns into the race going over the bars in a corner slowing us down a litt le bit. I had a fairly good ti me despite a small ti p over, but needed to speed up in the next tests. In test two I led our row through the test without making any huge mistakes and keeping my ti me consistent. The third test ended in bad crash for me. About half way through the third test I lost my rear brakes due to boiling the fl uid. About half of a mile from the fi nish I went into a corner trying to go fast and with no rear brakes ended up hitti ng a root which sent me into one tree sending me into another. When I hit the second tree my hand was smashed between my hand guard and the tree. I was knocked out when I hit the tree and woke up on my bike in a pine tree. I lost almost a minute and limped my way out of the secti on. Thankfully gas was right aft er that secti on. We got brakes bled and I tried get my mind off my swollen hand.I made my way to the next test. Even though I made it through the test cleanly I lost a lot of ti me due to my injured hand. I slowly made my way to the next secti on and tried to put it out of my head and push. The last test which was the longest was fun but a leg cramp at the beginning due to me not drinking enough water slowed me down a bit. This was the last test for the B class riders so I was done. Despite my injured hand I ended up in 3rd in the B200 class and a disappointi ng 20th in overall B. We wanted to provide a quick Family Enduro update. The event we had scheduled for May in Greenville, Ohio was postponed to June 14th due to the wet weather.

We did our best to get the message out to the parti cipants that the date of the event had changed. We used websites, an email blast and even Facebook to get a hold of as many people as possible. We returned all phone calls immediately, but we sti ll had a few people who made the trip to Ohio in May. I did make more phone calls to apologize.

I thought it would be a good opportunity to provide some guidance to the FES parti cipants on how we would communicate informati on if this situati on occurs again. I noti fi ed Michigan Off Road Events, D14 Enduro and MidwestEnduros.com that this event had been postponed. MORE and D14 Enduro both put noti ces on their Facebook pages. MidewestEnduros.com also put an immediate update on their website. D14 Enduro also has the opportunity to send an email to FES parti cipants, but you need to sign up for this service on their website.

A big THANK YOU to Thomas Dunn, Bill Smith and Ryan Moss for all of the assistance. A suggesti on was made by one of the individuals who traveled to Ohio to put a noti ce on the D14 website or note the fl yer posted on the website that the event was postponed. I will work with Bill Smith on this opti on.

So round #3 of the Family Enduro Series will sti ll be in Greenville, OH, but a month later than scheduled – June 14th. We are headed to Marquett e on June 28th and then we will get really busy the next month with three events in a row – Lawton, MI on July 19th, Matt hews, IN on July 26th and Bentley, MI on August 2. Sounds like a Summer full of fun!!

See you at the races!!Mike

What's your favorite movie of all ti me.

On Any Sunday

If you had a day off to do anything in the world you wanted — but you couldn't race — what would you do?

A lot a fi shing on Lake St. Clair.

What are your thoughts about ice racing becoming an X Games sport?

That's killer! People were racing motorcycles way before snowboards were even thought, it will be great for our sport.

What are your thoughts of running a MOTO scoring versus the current program?

That's how they used to do it on the day,

it would be cool, get some more seat ti me, get rid of our extra practi ce.

For the sake of constructi ve criti cism, can you tell me three things we should sustain as race organizers, and three things you would like to see improved on?

I like to see the Saturday races coming around, give us more opti ons and a Sunday off , and I would defi nitely like to see more promoti on of the sport, that has been lacking for years. As far as sustains, keep having events, more events, if the organizers don't have events, there is no sport.

June 2014 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News 19

by Steve Beane | June, 2014

How about that Ryan Villipoto Bret Metcalfe guy? Kawasaki certainly could have done worse fi nding a fi ll-in rider for the injured Villipoto than the veteran Kiwi. Mett y came out swinging at the MX Nati onals opener at Glen Helen and logged a super solid 4-4 for fourth overall in the premier class. Not a bad start for the reigning Canadian MX Nati onal champion.

If you missed the Laps for Hannah’s Socks event organized by the Toledo Trail Riders over the Memorial Day weekend, you missed a great ti me for a great cause. Held at the Maumee State Forest just outside Swanton, Ohio, the day off ered bike and quad riders a chance to turn some fun laps in a relaxed setti ng while supporti ng a great charity. Kudos to D14 riders Matt Bucher, Paul Bucher, Zach Parks - and all the rest of the Toledo Trail Riders - for putti ng on the event that raised over $1400 and collected hundreds of socks for the Hannah’s Socks charity.

New bike season gets earlier and earlier every year – it’s not even June at the ti me of this writi ng and we’ve already seen the offi cial release of the Suzuki moto bikes and some leaked photos and specs of the freshened KTMs. What I’m really holding out for is the introducti on of the Yamaha 2 strokes – Dirt Rider’s Kris Keefer hinted strongly that aft er years of only bold-new-graphics the blue bikes will receive a major overhaul.

For its part Beta released a very late-in-the-season 2014 Factory Editi on 350cc 4 stroke with a multi tude of changes that almost certainly will form the basis of their thumper line-up for years to come. Advanced casti ng techniques allowed the Italian fi rm to shrink the overall size of the powerplant, while revisions to the piston, crank, valve train, and oiling system seek to keep it at the head of the class. We’ll see soon – the fi rst 2015 Beta two-strokes will be available in August, with the four-strokes following closely behind.

Kalib Russell wrestled the win away from Charlie Mullins in the latest installment of GNCC racing, and unless a meteorite strikes the KTM hauler these two will capture every XC1 win on the series.

The Treaty City Family Enduro got postponed to June 14 due to torrenti al rains leading up to the original date. Who wants to race bike haulers north to Valley’s fi rst hare scrambles aft er the FES event wraps up?

So who caught the obvious ‘oops’ when I wrote that ‘Michigan has some of, if not THE best trails in Michigan?’ Clearly I meant “in the whole country.” Nevertheless, grab yourself a spark arrestor and some handguards and get out there.

Riders from Connecticut to Arizona and many places in between rely on the superior service that PlusOnePerformance delivers. For Betas and GasGas’ and all things dirt – give us try to find out why.

BULLDOG RIDERS MC (Millington, MI) | May 18Story by Steve Baginski | Photos as noted

This season is turning out to go just as fast as the last few as we are already

on to round three at Bulldogs M/C. Once again we had a great turnout with even bett er weather. The track was extremely fast and one of the best layouts. There were a few breakdowns and some crashes but in the end a great day of racing. This is always a hard track to be consistent on but always seems to be a favorite for some. I am looking forward to returning in the fall and on a Saturday!

The Innovati on riders were off fi rst with Colin Cook grabbing the holeshot with me a close second. Paul Gillett is a good

starter and was a close third followed by Terry Young and Tom Lee. Rich Machniak and Mike Poirier Sr. rounded out the group. About mid way through lap one, Colin went to the inside of a rider from another class and ti pped over. I was able to get by on the outside and take the lead. Paul slipped past as well but Colin was back on the bike quickly and on the move. Terry was a close fourth as Rich and Tom were doing batt le. Mike was loving his new ride and was numbering his days on the old Iron Man bike. I was out front and trying to get as much of a lead since I could see Colin coming. With the white fl ag waiving I could tell he was closing in and I was trying not to think about it. Then mid lap coming up to a jump, I hit neutral and he made the pass. I was able to keep the pressure on but it was too

late and he went on for the moto win. I had to sett le for second as Terry made his way into third. Paul slipped back to fourth as Rich was able to hold onto fi ft h. Tom rode hard but could only manage sixth as Mike took home seventh. Moto two, I was close to getti ng the start but Colin swept around the outside and took the lead. We were moving fast and both making mistakes. Paul was into third with Terry a close fourth as Tom and Rich were fi ghti ng

for fi ft h. Ryan had his bike issues fi gured out and giving chase in sixth just ahead of Mike. Colin and I were pulling away and I thought I was going to be able to make a pass, then at the start of lap three, I swapped hard and went over the bars. I hit my leg prett y hard and took a while to get going. He came by and put me a lap down and went on to an easy win and overall. Terry was on the gas and made his pass for second when a rider from the

other class tangled with Paul and went down hard. He was slow to get up and needed assistance to get his mangled bike off the track. He would end up with a DNF dropping him to seventh overall. Rich would also move a few spots up rounding out the podium. Tom took advantage of the crashes taking fourth for fifth overall. I was able to get back on the bike and ride around for the last lap and take fifth which was good enough for third overall. Ryan was caught right at the finish and was a lap down resulting in a sixth but his first moto DNS placed him in eighth. Mike made out pretty good in his first Innovation race with a 7-7 for sixth.

The Iron Man riders were next with Kevin Stone taking the holeshot. Mike Laczko led Rick Stone and Al Doneth as Randy Stone and Dale Darling were battling. As they came around with the green flag, Al was out front with Mike a close second. Kevin slipped to third as Randy held onto fourth. Al stretched out his lead a little more Mike had a solid second over Rick in third. Randy took over fourth and Dale to fifth mid race after Kevin had troubles dropping him to sixth. Al would take another moto win on his factory ride with Mike taking his third second in a row. Rick held on to third with Randy closing the gap in fourth. Dale took fifth as Kevin closed the gap as well in sixth. Brian struggled a little in the sand on the small bike taking seventh. Kevin was fast out of the gate again for moto two with another holeshot. Mike was a close second with Rick in third and Al calmly in fourth. Dale led Brian and Randy through turn one fighting for fifth. Once again as they came around to start lap two, Al was out front and opening up a lead. Mike was into second with Kevin and Rick fighting

for third. Randy was fi ft h with Brian taking sixth as Dale was seen pushing his bike out of the back. Lap three had Rick up into third as Kevin bobbled but sti ll ahead of Randy. With the last lap under way, Al was way out front and another 1-1 in the bag. Mike rode great and a lonely second as Rick held off the charge from Kevin for third and third overall. Kevin did bett er than his fi rst moto sixth but Randy was a litt le bett er with his 4-5 for fourth overall putti ng Kevin back to fi ft h. Brian had a good day but unfortunately had to gain a positi on from Dale as he took a dnf.

The next class out was Evoluti on with Bryan Hoeldtke taking the start over Harold Baumler, Kris Gillett and then George Mekjian. Tom Lee slid through next ahead of Doug Chaff ee and Mark Havalda. Bryan was quickly pulling a lead as Kris was up to second with Harold back to third just ahead of George. Tom was sti ll in fi ft h as Doug and Mark were closing in. For lap three, Bryan was sti ll out front with Kris closing the gap but it was Harold into third. Tom was up to fourth and Mark to fi ft h as George slipped to sixth. Then with the white fl ag waiving, Kris was seen pushing his bike back to the trailer ending his race and possibly his day. So that left Bryn to ride unchallenged for the last lap taking another moto win. Harold moved into second with Tom taking the fi nal step on the podium. Mark held

onto fourth as George was limping to fi ft h with some obvious bike issues. Moto two had some excitement as Harold took the holeshot only to have the race red fl agged due to a starti ng gate issue. So they had to line up again and do another start. Bryan got the second start with Harold a close second. George had his issues fi gured out starti ng third with Tom in fourth. Mark was fi ft h as Kris and Dale both were unable to get their bikes going for moto two. The batt les were for second and fourth between Harold/George and Tom/Mark. Bryan had the win locked as Harold had to fi ght for second and on lap three would fi nally pull a litt le gap on third place George. The fi ght fourth was a good one as Tom had the motor on Mark. They would race all the way to the checkered with Tom barely edging Mark for fourth. Bryan took another easy 1-1 as Harold rode great to a 2-2. Tom rode well and rounded out the podium with his 3-4 as George just missed out with his 5-3.

The Transiti on racers were next with most of the racers fi ghti ng for the holeshot. Tom Claerhout, Mark Cook, Dean Taylor and Joey Munger were side by side with Joe Sangster coming up the inside with Austi n Visger and George Mekjian following him. Brad Bolzman and Keri Laczko were only a bike length behind. Tom and Dean were out front and fl ying with Joe sett ling into third. Joey and Austi n had him in their sights with Mark and Brad doing batt le. The fi ght for the win went all the way to the end with Dean coming out on top. Tom was a close second as they pulled away from the rest of the pack. Austi n had his bike dialed in and made the pass on Joey for third at the start of lap three and held on for the last step on the box. Mark batt led back aft er slowing mid race to fi ft h as Joe slid back to sixth. Brad fought hard aft er a slower start up to seventh as George had a hard ti me holding onto his 500 dropping back to eighth. When the gate fell for moto two it was Tom with a great jump and the holeshot.

posal detail. In spite of those conditi ons it was sti ll fun. Why? Because over the course of 6 miles you had to deal with such a varied amount of terrain. The woods were ti ghter than most enduros (thank-fully they were short in length) and the sand forced you to ride aggressive or slip into Nancy-boy mode. The moto track is always sketchy (hard pack) but it’s easy to learn aft er a few laps. That rock-faced up-hill was a hoot. As long as you took that in-side corner line you were ok. If you swung wide you were screwed. That corner was a minefi eld of momentum snatching rocks that killed your drive up the hill. I don’t recall a single secti on that was smooth or even level. The rocks seemed to ooze up from the depths of purgatory.

This was an exact replica of last year’s lay out. However, the dust made it seem like a whole new track. Riding blind adds a new level of excitement to racing. Actu-ally, aft er the second lap it was manage-able. I think the morning quads blew off the heavy layer for us. The woods or verti -cal lumber as I like to call it were covered in leaves which camoufl aged all the rocks and roots. Nothing bett er than blasti ng single track that you can’t see. Every dip and bump became a new religion for me. I had several “Come to the Light” moments. Good stuff . The leaves were gone aft er a lap or two and then you could see the haz-ards in the trail. Except that one sti ck. If you raced this event I bet you are sporti ng a bruise or puncture wound in your right bicep. That one sti ck snagged quite a few riders. Again, fun stuff .

Numbers ti me. 51 real men (3 hr), 49 Nancy-boys (2 hr), and 13 minis. That to-tals to 113. We had a few DNF’s. I have to blame the heat and dust for that. The White Trash crew provided their awe-some cow skull awards. Special shout out to Jordan Mapes for taking the overall. It is good to see him back in champion form. Another menti on to Ron Scharphorn our 2013 champ taking the 2 hour OA . One fi nal thought… As you go through life (or racing), if you want to avoid criti cism:

Logs To Lumber Series

33 Motosports Park (Mio, MI) | May 18

May 18 was the date of the 33 Motosports Hare Scramble. This fi rst class facility in Mio has a nati onal caliber MX track with huge potenti al. Kevin Fleszar has taken control as the new manager and has been running a dozer reshaping this track. In an eff ort to scale down the inti midati on fac-tor, Kevin has been working like an immi-grant melon picker. Life in the great north is rewarding but you’ll never get rich. Hard work and long hours is what the Fleszar clan are use to.

We had just over 4 miles to play on this cold but dry day. I think we all can appreci-ate the dry conditi ons this year. Kevin had to eliminate the trenched out single track in the southeast corner. It was too soft to be used again and would have been be-yond ugly, perhaps even blind date fugly? I was disappointed that the ditch jump was eliminated as well but was promised it would be back for the October date. The ground was sti ll soft from the aggressive winter but dust was minimal. The woods secti on soon became trenched and re-quired a careful thrott le hand (that would be your right, you know who you are score lane rejects). Which brings me to a most positi ve aspect. Scoring was perfect. No problems, no issues, and no worries. I att ribute that to Kevin’s unique scoring lane lay out. Riders blasted up to a huge shipping container and had to make a hard right to get around. They then were funneled into the scoring lanes that were well marked. From there the riders rolled through slow and easy into the short but technical Pines secti on.

I have to acknowledge the overall winner, Mr. Brad Benjamin. This guy has always been a threat but was able to secure the lead and keep it from lap 9. Robert Cribbs was the guy he had to batt le with. Both of these young guns are great competi tors that represent the sport well. I have no-

ti ced a lot of riders have stepped up their game this year.

I witnessed a few riders launch over the big jumps. Very cool to see. I admire the skill of our riders. But most of all, the level of cooperati on between the riders. As a group we respect one another. That’s the way it should be and will conti nue. Well done.

Let’s look at some numbers. 57 real riders (3 hour), 57 wimps (2 hour), and 11 minis which totals at 125 riders. Considering the distance of this track, not too shabby. Since we’re talking numbers, bring a bud-dy to your next event. Get more people involved. That brings up another concern. I have been running a skeleton crew for scoring and welcome any help. Anyti me you see me behind a computer at scoring means epic mistakes and long delays.

The OA award was a logging axe mounted on a board. Simple but very cool. Riders love original and innovati ve trophies like this. These are the litt le details that make a club get noti ced and respected. Remem-ber, to be eligible for the “Logs To Lum-ber” mini series you must ride all 3 events. The owners of 33 Motosports also own a sawmill or two hence the name.

WhiteTrash

White Trash Racing (Mio, MI) | June 01

I am biased about this event. I love this track and every rock infested, shock-ex-ploding, ground pounding feature. This is the type of event that makes memories. This is the type of event you brag to your buddies that you fi nished. This is the event that you actually keep your award and not donate it to the Family Enduro Series. This is the type of event that earns you your “Man Card”. So yeah, I like this track.

This was our fi rst heat casualty inducing race. In additi on to the 85 degrees was a never ending layer of silt and dust. This race went from being tough to bomb dis-

Mark and George were next with Joe and Austi n rounding out the top fi ve. Brad and Joey were very close as Dean was off to a slow start. Half way through the fi rst lap Tom was sti ll out front with Austi n into second and Dean already setti ng him up for the pass. Joey and Mark were next with George and Joe also doing batt le just ahead of Brad. On lap three Dean had caught up to Tom and was looking for a way around. Austi n was barely ahead of Joey as they were slightly gapping Mark and Joe while Brad was on the gas and just ahead of George. With the white fl ag out Tom sti ll had the lead over Dean but Joey had made the pass on Austi n for third. As Dean was making the pass on Tom for the lead, Brad was also making a pass on Joe for sixth. Tom tried his best but Dean was just a bit faster and no mistakes gave him another moto win and his fi rst 1-1 on the season. Tom had to sett le for second as Joey held on to third and third overall. Austi n was disappointed in his 3-4 for fourth while Mark was consistent with his 5-5 for fi ft h. Brad did one spot bett er as he made his pass sti ck on Joe for sixth as they swapped moto positi ons and the overall. George started fast but faded in the end to eighth both moto’s. Keri enjoyed her second race of the season and is looking forward to the rest.

As I am writi ng this, were have completed the fi rst four races. All of our races are now at all D-14 races and our next race will be at Batt le Creek on June 8th. Aft er that we head to Freelin MX on the 22nd and then we make our return to Valley MX for the Fourth of July weekend. Although it is a sugar, it is metabolized diff erently than sucrose or glucose and is absorbed instantly into the bloodstream. Unlike other sugars, excess ribose isn’t converted into fat by the body; instead, it is saved for use in ATP energy producti on. This vital diff erence is key to the importance of supplementi ng; and doing so supports cellular energy levels, energy recovery, and energy reserves. It also supports healthy energy levels in the heart and muscles.

By uti lizing Bioenergy Ribose®, Young Living delivers ribose that is: 1. non-GMO; 2. naturally occurring; and 3. Kosher and Halal certi fi ed

If that isn’t enough to convince you of the power of this product, Bioenergy Ribose®

is currently part of the training regimens of many Olympic athletes. These athletes not only undergo extreme physical stress, but they are also limited to natural supple-ments and subjected to extensive testi ng. If ribose can help top athletes support their energy levels, just think of what it can do for you on and off the track.
