¡Hola pingüinos!

I hope summer treated you well. Treasure the

memories and look back at them when you're

feeling down. However now it is time to buckle

down as school approaches. You will be

challenged by both school and Key Club. Find a

way to balance your life and find the best of both

worlds!

I don't know about everyone else, but words

cannot express how excited I am about my fourth

and final FALL RALLY!!!! I cannot wait to have our

Key Club shirt in hand, screaming how good I feel.

But first things first! Each of us must contribute to the

division goal of $3000 for PTP! This is an opportunity

for YOU to make a difference and leave your

GOLDEN legacy. As dedicated members, we can

once again break our previous record of $2500!

Once again, the next few months will be a very

busy time as students and as Key Clubbers. If you

ever need to contact me for anything, know that I

am here. I want to help you not only leave your

GOLDEN Legacy, but also share your enthusiasm

with others. Good Luck and never hesitate to ask

for help.

Hello Penguins! I hope you all had a wonderful golden

summer! Are you all excited for ’13-’14 school year? Well,

I am! I’m excited to have tons of fun with my key club

family! I can’t wait to do more community services and

bonding time with them! I know you guys are excited to

bond with your key club fam bam, too! Oh, if you have

friends that are not members of your key club yet, ask

them to join your OHANA! The more the merrier! If you

have any questions, don’t be shy to ask me, Carolyn,

Vivian, or Maleko. Enjoy the newsletter! And I’ll see you all

at DCM.

Officer Training Conference (OTC)

What is OTC? It’s an Officer training conference, where all the key club officers gather and learn about their responsibilities for their club. Workshops are held by the division leadership team. In the workshops, the officers learn how to fulfill their duties while still having plenty of fun. This year’s OTC, the Pirate Penguins (D19N) collaborated with the Beasty Bunnies (D19s). It was the first joint event as Division 19. The event was called the Ultra Mega Beautiful Beasty Pirate Officer Training Conference.

Month of AUGUST

EL SEGUNDO: The El Segundo High School Key Club is currently getting ready for the next school year. We are going back to school next week and August has been full of planning. We have all had so much summer fun but now we have to get serious and start fundraising. Club Rush and Fall Rally are just around the corner. Also, dues season is approaching and we aim to achieve the early bird distinction. We are all excited for the next school year. We are sure it is going to be great as we continue to waddle in service. GARDENA: The month of August is a pretty important time at our schools key club. We begin to go back to school, and the major events in our community began to happen, such as the Gardena Jazz Festival. One of the events that we've recently helped out at was our community's ice cream social. Fourteen Volunteers from Gardena High attended that event. There task varied from setting up chairs, cleaning, and scooping ice cream. It was a great turn out of around 100 people attended the event at our community center in Gardena. Our community greatly appreciates all of our help.

Lawndale: During the month of July we have attended one volunteering event in downtown LA. On July 28th we were volunteering at a Flea Market. The Flea Market event was from 7am- 4pm and on July 27th there was a mandatory orientation meeting. During the event volunteers were helping vendors set up tables, tents and supplies. Other members were helping at the cashier registers and helping with wrist bands. We were given food, drinks and a shirt in exchange for helping out.

Cams: During the month of July CAMS Key Club was given the opportunity to aid in the Eagle Scout project of CAMS student Bryan Kuan. A few of our members spent the day with Bryan Kuan, his family, and fellow scout mates beautifying the Salesian Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles. Rolling into August the club began to slow down in activity in response to the fast approach of school and the inactivity that comes with summer. For the month of August CAMS Key Club attended one major event. Led by former vice president An Tran, CAMS Key Club volunteered at the Compton Neighborhood Pride Day on August 3, 2013. Although not many of our members come from the Compton community, as Key Clubbers we felt the need to give back even if the community was not our own. On this day a few of our members spent the day landscaping and cleaning the area of W. 134th Place between Grandee Ave and Compton Ave. During this day of beautification our volunteers were faced with a day of work, and the nice surprise of free lunch and breakfast. Currently we are looking into the Gardena Jazz Festival as a future service project in August. For the remainder of summer CAMS Key Club hopes to plan out for the beginning of the year with Carolyn Kim, preparing service projects and fundraiser ideas in preparation for Fall Rally and DCON. The school year is swiftly approaching, starting on August 20th, and CAMS Key Club is ready and excited for another great year of service.

HMSA: HMSA's Key Club has greatly interacted with our Kiwanis and have SHINED in helping out when needed. We have helped out in the city of Hawthorne's Good Neighbors Day where we set up and were not only able to see some BEAUTIFUL cars, but were also able to meet a past Key Clubber who chanted our Favorite Key Club "How Do You Feel?" Chant. It was a ravishing moment to see such spirit in a past Key Clubber. Also, later that same day some HMSA Key Clubbers were able to attend Junipero Serra High School's Relay For Life where we met many FANTASTIC people and were able to help out with fixing up the luminaries and of course enjoying ourselves at the LOVELY event.

Right after OTC, our July DCM was held. We had our Special guest, Neil Yanga, the Ltg. Of D1, the ninjas!

LEADERSHIP

CAMS: CAMS Key Club is proud to announce that this month’s member of the month is An

Tran. She has shown to be a key member to the club. An has devoted countless hours helping

out CAMS Key Club as an immediate past officer and still continues to show her love for service by organizing the Compton Pride Day service event and chairing it. Although not on board this year, An helps out her community

and her Key Club friends. She shares her wisdom she obtained as an officer and guides the officers from the new board. She has proven to

be a key member and CAMS Key Club is thrilled to still have her in the club this year.

Da Vinci:The member of the month for Da Vinci Science would have to be Becky Lu. Becky

always stays on top of the emails that Carolyn sends (even before Maleko sometimes) about

future events and she will post about the email right after she reads it on Facebook. She is always energetic about key club and she is very positive

about our newly chartered club. Last but not least, Becky is someone that is very kind and

cares about our members. EL SEGUNDO: We voted Sarah Alhassan as the

member of the month for the month of July. She has been extremely active in communicating

with every member. In July, the El Segundo High School Key Club participated in the Fourth of July Fair. During the whole time, Sarah never

left the booth and constantly assisted the club in selling snow cones. She helped put the snow

cones together and give them to the customers. She approached the task with positive attitude the entire time and really put a good name to Key Club. She continues to work hard and be

active in all Key Club activities.

GARDENA: In the month of August, we have decided that our MOM is Ariana Cruz

Hernandez. We chose her to be the MOM because she has put in the time and effort and commitment to participate in Key Club events during the summer. A notable mention to our Bulletin Editor Jennifer Guzman. Along side

with Jennifer, Ariana has racked up 38 hours of total service for just one event and that is the Village Runner. Anyways, to wrap things up.

High five to our MOM. Keep up the good work and keep waddling. I am proud of you. Our club

is proud of you. Key Club is proud of you.

HMSA: Marc Ninapaytan is still a Key Club rookie, but with his spirit,

dedication, and devotion to Key Club, he is quickly learning the ropes of Key Club. Although Marc recently joined Key Club the previous year, he has already taken huge steps from becoming a member to club president in such a short amount of time. Marc is extremely spirited, as many who have gone to district events may have noticed, and he has gotten members to go

volunteering over the long summer months. Marc doesn’t take any breaks. He always has volunteer opportunities for our

members to be a part of. King Drew: We are proud to say that

Carmen Padilla from King/Drew Medical Magnet High School has earned the title of

Member of the Month for August! She shows outstanding participation in all

meetings and in volunteering events. In addition, she is a proud member of Key

Club who shows care and love towards all her beloved friends. Yay Carmen!

Lawndale: This month’s member of the month is Anthony Gonzalez! The board is very happy with his work as a member and his help as everyone’s friend. He doesn’t just go to most events; he guides us when even the board is lost. His skills on the Metro help the entire club go to the correct time and place! Many of our club’s success stories have him involved. He is one of the members the board and other members can always rely on. He rallies us up with his kind and supportive words and always likes to see other members improve.

As a current board member and a member for the past 4 years, I’ve seen Anthony always there for the club and past boards, he was also a past historian and even though he lost an election, he never gave up hope for the club and that makes him one of the greatest members I have ever seen. He is my number one member that I can always rely on, he is honest, has great charisma and hidden but amazing spirit! He may not be one for yelling out all the cheers but he always encourages others to carry on his quiet (and even shy) voice!
