Dr. Walshire’s Young Authors
What flies at night? A bat. Did you know that a platypus is a swimming mammal that has webbed feet? Or that 1st graders in Dr. Walshire's class published a book about Amazing Animals? These young authors spent a tremendous amount of time learning the publishing process as they increased their skills in writ-ing with punctuation, spelling, researching, and more! They even had a recognition ceremony to honor and celebrate their efforts and finished product complete with families in attendance and a book reading. W.C. Petty is proud of their 1st publication and look forward to the talents that will continue to blossom, and who knows, maybe even a few future authors!

Kindergarten: Structure & Function: Human Body: Kindergarteners are working on a project to create a model “X Ray” of their hands. Students will arrange and glue puzzle pieces (bones) to the correct spot on their hand prints.Next, we will work on our engineering design problem: design and create a model of an ef-fective and comfortable arm cast. 1st Grade- Animal Adaptations: First grade finished creating their engineering design project: traveling hat. First graders brought (or will soon bring) home a hat they created with its own “adaptations” to survive an extreme environment. Up next, we will begin our unit exploring the moon, sun, and stars. 2nd Grade- Properties of Matter: Second grade students completed building and testing their engineering design project: ice pop cover. Using heat lamps, a frozen water ice pop, and their creation, students tested an ice pop cover that will keep an ice pop from melting without a freezer. 3rd Grade- Programming Patterns: Computers/Coding: Third grade students finished their computer sci-ence/coding unit. Their final project was to create and code a game with an interactive character (using iPad ’s balance), moving obstacles, and a score tracker. 4th Grade- Robotics: Fourth grade students are learning how to code Sphero robots. Their first challenge was to code the robot to travel a perfect square. Up next, we will be integrating some creativity by coding the Sphero robots to create a piece of art. Students will apply the skills they picked up in STEM in art class—a great example of STEAM! 5th grade- Robotics and Automation: Fifth graders have completed building a robot vehicle, using VEX Kits with robotics. Their most recent project challenged them to create a maze, measure the path, and create a coding project to get the robot to autonomously travel from start to finish!
