EP housecleaner facesfelony theft charge
Amie Iacono, 29, of Plymouth has beencharged with felony-level theft for alleged-ly stealing a platinum ring and a tennisbracelet from an Eden Prairie homewhere she worked as a housecleaner.
The following details and allegationswere in a criminal complaint filed inHennepin County District Court:
On Dec. 10, an Eden Prairie manreported a platinum ring had beenstolen from their bedroom about a weekearlier, and he also reported a tennisbracelet had been stolen in July.
They suspected Iacono, their houseclean-er, based on her behavior in early December.
Eden Prairie police checked theAutomatic Pawn System and deter-mined Iacono had pawned a tennisbracelet July 20 and a platinum ring Dec.2 at the Pawn America in Hopkins.
While being interviewed by an EdenPrairie detective, Iacono admitted tostealing the two pieces of jewelry, whichwere valued over $1,000.
She could face up to five years inprison, a fine up to $10,000 or both.
Repeat DWI offender Alexsandr Naboka, 29, of Minneapolis
has been charged with first-degree DrivingWhile Impaired, a felony, after he waspulled over New Year’s Day in Eden Prairie.
The following details and allegationswere provided in a Criminal Complaintfiled in Hennepin County District Court:
At 1:49 a.m., Naboka’s car was stoppedfor various traffic violations. Officers sawhim speeding on Highway 5 near MitchellRoad; he crossed the lane divider twice,crossed the fog line once and continuouslyweaved within his lane of traffic; and, heexited at Prairie Center Drive, failing tocome to a complete stop at the red light.
The officer approached the vehicle andcould smell “an overwhelming odor ofalcohol.” Naboka was ultimately placedunder arrest, and around 3 a.m. he took abreath test, which recorded a .20 bloodalcohol concentration. His driver’s licensehas a restriction for any use of alcohol ordrugs, which invalidates his license.
Naboka had been convicted of DrivingWhile Intoxicated on Jan. 9, 2002; Jan. 24,2002 and July 28, 2003. He could face 3-7years in prison, a fine up to $14,000 (orboth) and a conditional release.

Many Americans – even if they’ve never been to one –are vaguely familiar with Chinese New Year’s celebrations.
The Hopkins community will have the opportunitythis month to see another culture’s celebration. TheJapan America Society of Minnesota will hold its NewYear’s celebration, “Shinnenkai,” 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan.16, at the Eisenhower Community Center.
The society has been holding the celebration foralmost 20 years, but this is the first year it will be heldin Hopkins – it is typically held in St. Paul.
The society’s executive director Ben van Lierop livesin Hopkins with his family and was familiar with theEisenhower Community Center.
“We wanted a place that would work for us,” he said. “Itseemed to be the right situation, so we decided to go for it.”
The society’s celebration is one of the biggestJapanese New Year’s celebrations in the metro area. Ithas drawn between 300 and 500 people in previousyears. The family-friendly event is open to the publicand will feature live performances, food and contests.
It will feature Mochizuki rice pounding – a NewYear’s tradition in Japan – art, exhibits, calligraphy, an
Oriental bazaar and a karaoke competition.“We want it to be as authentic as we can make it,
given the fact we are in Minnesota,” van Lierop said.Though there might be a couple similarities, he said,
the Japanese New Year’s celebration is different thanthe Chinese. He recommended anyone interested inlearning more about the culture to attend the event.
2011 is the Year of the Rabbit in both Japanese andChinese culture. China will celebrate its new year Feb.14, but Japan begins its new year Jan. 1.
The reason Minnesota’s Japan Society holds its NewYear’s celebration later in January is because manyfamilies travel over the holidays.
Saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming thenew one is a big deal in Japan, van Lierop said.“Japanese New Year’s is a family-oriented day,” he said.“It’s important in the culture.”

The Eden Prairie School District admin-istration asserted that student achievementin science is lacking, and the School Boardagreed during its most recent meeting.
The School Board reviews achieve-ment in science, math, reading andother topics on an annual basis.
“We assert the organization is notmaking reasonable progress towardachieving the Board’s stated results inScience,” stated the administration’sreport for the Jan. 4 meeting.
The report noted a lack of progress infifth-grade, eighth-grade and in high school.
Minnesota ComprehensiveAssessment scores indicated stagnantgrowth, with all categories of highschool students progressing below theexpected rate, according to the report.
MCAs are used to measure studentachievement. Math and reading MCAsare required by the state to measureyearly progress under the federal NoChild Left Behind law.
Other assessments showed betterresults for some students but they alsoshowed that an achievement gap stillexists with other student groups, accord-ing to the administration’s report.
“We have work to do, and I think that wejust know this,” Supt. Melissa Krull said.
She said the amount of scienceinstruction time is inconsistent in ele-mentary schools. Not all students arereceiving science instruction from theirhomeroom teacher, either, she said.
Krull said increasing classroom timefor science, eliminating the grade 5 tran-sition with the K-6 change, instillingaspects of STEM (Science TechnologyEngineering and Math) and reviewingwhich instructors teach science shouldhelp improve science achievement.
Boardmember Ranee Jacobus said ifit’s determined all elementary teacherswould teach science to their homeroomstudents, rather than a teacher outsidethe normal classroom, she wanted tomake sure the homeroom teachers aregetting science training.
When Boardmember Holly Parkerasked why so few English LanguageLearners were taking the MCA sciencetest, High School Principal ConnMcCartan said students may opt out ofELL program before they get to theirbiology class, so they’re not counted inthe ELL category of MCA results.
Some ELL students may also notshow up for the test since students takeit outside their classroom.
The state doesn’t require studentstake its science MCA test, unlike therequirement for math and reading.
“Is it fair to say kids are skipping the[science] test?” Jacobus asked.
“Yes,” McCartan said.McCartan said if they can get more
students to sit for the test, they could seea bump in the scores, and he could takemore leadership steps to improve thetest participation.
He later noted that although theMCA test scores are behind whencompared to other districts, the SATand college enrollment examples areon par or better than other districtsand the state average.
That could highlight a difference in howschool districts sequence science coursesdifferently, according to McCartan.
When Jacobus asked what thingshave been done since it was deter-mined last year that reasonableprogress was not being made in sci-ence, Oak Point Intermediate Schoolprincipal Chuck Richter mentionedincreased writing and vocabularyexercises in fifth- and sixth-gradecurriculum to better prepare for thewritten portion of science tests.
Boardmember Chuck Mueller said moreweight must be put on science curriculum,and Boardmember John Estall said itwould be good to see the enthusiasm andeffort put toward science that is put towardthe popular music program – a commentthat he heard from a parent, he said.
To get a clearer assessment of sciencescores from the administration and tocreate more incentive for students to sitfor the MCA science test, Jacobus pro-posed an amendment to the motion foraccepting the administration’s report.
The amendment called for the adminis-tration to provide other indicators of sci-ence achievement and to create incentivesfor students (high school students in partic-ular) to take the test. One idea mentionedwas making the MCA science test required.
Parker said the MCAs have beengiven for three years, so she expectedchanges would have been made sooner.
Parker also said she didn’t think theadministration’s report adequatelyshowed ways science performancecould be improved, which was turnedinto an amendment to have the admin-istration come back March 8 with thoseimprovement steps.
The motion to accept the report(along with the two amendments) passedunanimously.

Minnesota will host a panel of bullyingexperts 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25, at theschool’s Performing Arts Center, 6385Beach Road, Eden Prairie.
This is a free event, and it’s open tothe public.
Verbal, physical and cyber bullyingare issues the panel members willaddress, and they’ll answer specificquestions attendees may have.
The panel includes Dr. WalterRoberts, Lynn Miland and Jena Garee.
Roberts is a professor of counseloreducation at Minnesota StateUniversity, whose research is in theareas of bullying prevention andschool safety.
He has written two books focusingon the topic of intervention, titled“Bullying from Both Sides” and“Talking with Parents of Bullies andVictims.”
As a parent advocate for the ParentAdvocacy Coalition for EducationalRights and the parent of a child whowas the target of bullying, Miland
can bring both a professional andpersonal perspective to the issue ofbullying.
At PACER, Lynn works closelywith the organization’s NationalBullying Prevention Center, whichprovides expert advice on bullyingprevention for children, teens,schools and communities.
Garee is an Eden Prairie-based ther-apist who holds a master’s degree inCounseling Psychology and is alicensed Marriage and FamilyTherapist.
She is currently a clinical supervi-sor leading a team of six in-home prac-titioners and providing outpatienttherapy.
Garee has had intensive trainingaround providing an evidence-basedtreatment, Trauma-FocusedCognitive-Behavioral Therapy to treatchildren and adolescents with histo-ries of trauma and who struggle withanxiety, depression and disruptivebehaviors.

Five new tenniscourts will be added atMinnetonka MiddleSchool East with a$100,000 check from theHennepin County’sYouth Sports GrantProgram.
The MinnetonkaSchool District accept-ed the grant Jan. 6 atthe school board meet-ing. HennepinCounty’s 6th DistrictCommissioner JanCallison, who repre-sents the area, was on hand.
Both the district’s middle schoolsonly have two existing courts, meaningMME will now have seven courts total.The Youth Sports Grants Programs areused to help facilitate new or improveexisting youth facilities throughoutthe county.
“The county has a strong interestin the health of the residents,”Callison said.
“We know we need a populationthat is healthy, and it starts with jun-ior high and high school. So we see itas an investment in the future of thecounty.”
The revenue for the grants is gath-ered in part from the sales tax rev-enue generated by a sales tax ostensi-bly to help fund the Twin’s new ball-park, Target Field.
Grants go to those who can provideprojects that represent a need in thecommunity, sustainability of theproject, environmental sensibilityand community commitment.
The grant will be matched byschool district funds from long-termmaintenance of $400,000 to repaveand repair existing courts and con-struct the new courts.
The district says they have seen ahigh demand of those wishing to playtennis and have the attitude that itwill not only benefit students buteverybody in the community wishingto use the courts.
A similar project is scheduled forMinnetonka Middle School West thissummer.

New school configuration – same tradition of excellenceDiscussion over
the past fewmonths of all thatwill be new in ourschools has beenexciting andaffirming for somewhile difficult andchallenging forothers.
The one con-stant over time hasbeen this: every-one involved – parents, staff,and School Board members –has been advocating for whatthey honestly think is best forchildren.
Our Continued Excellencethrough Transformationprocess will culminate nextfall with our schools transi-tioning from serving studentsin kindergarten through gradefour to serving studentsthrough grade six.
This week, the new elemen-tary school boundary map thatfacilitates this transition wasshared with families as well asthe new school hours for thefall.
I do not suggest nor pretendthat the journey we haveembarked on will be an easyone. But what I also know to betrue is this: our dedicatedteaching staff, our school lead-ership teams and our districtadministration are steadfast inmaintaining the will and thecapacity to meet every chal-lenge and to overcome everyobstacle as we move forward.
I know that as long as wekeep our focus on the tasks athand, and direct our energiestoward successfully imple-menting our TransformationPlan, we will reach our goals.
But we want you to knowthat this transformation isabout much more than achange in grade configurationor a new boundary map.

Replicate Success Eden Prairie Schools will
phase in, across all sites,some of the successfulinstructional programs andpractices that are currentlybeing used at Forest HillsElementary School and otherschools in the district. Thiswill include school-wide sys-tems for building and sustain-ing long-term relationshipswith students and families,extending learning timethrough enhanced before andafter school programming,and using frequent and con-sistent assessments in read-ing and math so teachers canmake “just in time” changesto instruction for students.
Simultaneously, we willphase in newly-defined best
practices that have emergedthrough the K-6 Ideas andPossibilities Task Force byensuring that all of our ele-mentary school schedulesinclude a:
• 120-minute literacylearning block,
• 75-minute math learningblock,

eliminate the isolation oflow-income students. By bal-ancing our schools, we intendto provide learning communi-ties that reflect the changingdemographics of the city inwhich we live. At ourSpanish immersion school,too, we will pursue multiplestrategies to ensure futurebalance.

Anew alignment of preschoolprogramming, as well as offer-ing more classes for more fam-ilies, will serve as an effectiveand efficient strategy for pro-viding these students opportu-nities to best prepare them forlearning in our K-6 schools.
Our schools are great today,and this work will help ensurethat they are even bettertomorrow. We must constant-ly attend to the horizon beforeus to ensure that we are mak-ing the changes necessary toensure that students havewhat they need while they arein our classrooms and havewhat they need to be success-ful once they graduate.

I wear several Eden Prairiehats as resident, father, mathteacher, volunteer, husband ofa school board member andpresident of the Foundation forEden Prairie Schools.
Regardless of the hat, it’sbeen challenging to watchrecent school-related events.
This letter is written withmy FEPS president hat on, andin this role I offer no opinion onthese events.
Rather, I write to let all knowFEPS will offer an opportunity forthe entire community to cometogether in support of teachersand students when it holds theTaste of Eden Prairie on Feb. 26.
It feels like a good time for anonpartisan event that focusesattention on the teachers and
students we all want to support.I write this letter with some
trepidation that it might beviewed as opportunistic. Mymotives are quite the opposite,however.
FEPS has experiencedtremendous growth over thelast three years. I want to seethe growth continue. It is myhope that all will recognize thatFEPS is a nonprofit, run by avolunteer board that providednearly $50,000 of support toteachers and students last year.
Since its inception, FEPShas independently made grantsand commitments totalingroughly $250,000.
I invite the entire communityto come celebrate and supportgreat teachers and great studentsat the 2011 Taste of Eden Prairie.

Seniors must become their own ‘fraud squad’BY BOB RAMSEY • GUEST COLUMNIST
We hear a lot today about sen-iors becoming victims of fraud.
It’s not that seniors are biggersuckers than others. Plenty ofyounger people get scammed too.It’s just that older folks are target-ed because they often have sav-ings set aside, they are a large,growing “market” and many havecompromised physical or mentalhealth conditions that make themmore vulnerable.
Common scams aimed at sen-iors include foreign lottery hoax-es, phony charities, bogus homerepair contracts and too-good-to-be-true giveaway offers. Of course,scammers are creative and newschemes appear almost weekly.Unfortunately, they often workbecause they contain a grain oftruth and people want to believe inunbelievable deals.
That’s why part of vital agingand remaining independent ismanaging your own resourcesand protecting what’s yours fromcon artists and sweet-talking
swindlers. As it turns out, Godreally does help those who helpthemselves.
We all know the cautions weshould follow: Don’t give out per-sonal information, don’t pay for aprize you’ve already “won,” don’twire money to people you don’tknow and don’t rush to buyunder pressure. It always pays toexercise the power of the pause.
Four more of my favorite tips:dare to hang up on unwantedcalls, don’t let overly friendlystrangers into your home, don’tbelieve a deal is legitimate justbecause it appears in print or onTV or comes through the mail,and remember, you can’t win a lot-tery if you didn’t buy a ticket.
It’s also important not to betoo embarrassed to report acrime. Being a victim of frauddoesn’t mean you’re foolish. Notreporting it does.
Life’s too short (especially forseniors) to become paranoid; butthe old military mantra, “Trust –but verify,” is still sound advice.After all, you’ve worked too long
and hard for your money just togive it away to the bad guys.
Today’s seniors have the lifeexperience and elder wisdom toshut down scammers and “trunkslammers” (fly-by-nighters), butthey have to become their own“fraud squad” to do it.
The best advice is “when indoubt, check it out.” If you suspector spot fraud, blow the whistle.Here’s who to call (besides yourlocal police): the Better BusinessBureau at 1-800-646-6222, theAttorney General’s Office at 1-800-657-3767 or the FBI at 612-376-3200.
The truth is that seniors havethe power to turn the tables oncrooks. The trick is to be smart,be informed, be cautious, be alertand be assertive. Criminals onlysucceed when the communitylets them. Don’t let them. Thisyear, resolve to live fraud-free andshow predators it doesn’t pay tomess with today’s breed of sea-soned citizens.

It’s that time of year again—whatwill you pledge to improve this year?How about making a commitment tobe more environmentally friendly?
Think aboutthe waste you oryour family pro-duces and howyou can mini-mize thatamount. Recyclemore, buy less,reduce waste –there are manyways to reduce your impact. Hereare a few ideas:
• Pick one new thing to recycle.Choose cereal boxes, paper toweltubes, or items from the bathroomlike toothpaste boxes and sham-poo bottles. Most of us can recy-cle more than we think. Readabout what items can be recycledon RethinkRecycling.com.
• Get your name off of junkmail lists. Each year, the averagehousehold in the U.S. receivesmore than 40 lbs. of unwanted,unsolicited mail. Many find junkmail to be a real pain, but it’ssometimes hard to know who tocontact to remove your namefrom a list. Rethink Recycling hascompiled resources for gettingyour name off lists of major mar-keters, credit companies, and howto register with the DirectMarketing Association’s MailPreference Service.
• Pack a no-waste lunch.Another easy “be green, savegreen” tip: Use a reusable lunchbag and reusable containersinstead of plastic bags or dispos-able containers – and of course, acloth napkin.
• Use a reusable mug and bags.Instead of using a Styrofoam orpaper cup from the coffee shop,bring in your own mug. Use areusable lunch bag and bring awater bottle to refill; you’ll savemoney and reduce waste.
• Look for less packaging andavoid disposables. This one’s big –nearly 30 percent of our trash ispackaging. Much of this is card-
board, which can be recycled, butwhy use the resources on recy-cling when we didn’t need thatpackaging in the first place?When you’re at the store, buy inbulk and bring reusable bags to

• Borrow, rentor shop used.Borrow or rentitems that
friends or neighbors have or thatstores offer, then check out buy-ing used before heading to thestore for a new item that you’llonly use a couple of times.
• Reduce toxins in your home.Instead of using store-boughthousehold cleaners that mayharm the environment, considermaking your own cleaners thatwork well and keep kids, pets andthe environment safe.
• Explore composting. If youdon’t already compost, read aboutit on RethinkRecycling.com.

Now appearing in a Hennepin Countycity or neighborhood near you: tobacco-free parks and smoke-free apartmentbuildings.
As part of Hennepin County’sStatewide Health ImprovementProgram grant, the Association forNonsmokers-Minnesota is assistinglandlords and city officials in adoptingtobacco and smoke-free policies. Thesepolicies protect everyone from reduc-ing secondhand smoke exposure to dis-couraging youth from starting to usetobacco and encouraging tobacco usersto quit.
Smoke-free rental housingSince September 2009, 62 apart-
ment buildings in suburbanHennepin County have adoptedsmoke-free policies for indoor areasincluding individual apartment units.Building owners are protecting thehealth of their residents, cuttingdown on cleaning costs and reducingthe risk of fires caused by cigarettes.
Stoneleigh at the Reserve apartmentsin Plymouth is among those thatimplemented the “Live Smoke Free”program this summer.
“Residents love the fact that they areliving in a smoke-free property, and theprogram has generated a lot of positivefeedback from our current residents andprospects,” said Amy Hesselgrave,Stoneleigh senior business manager.“This is a ‘win–win’ program for every-one involved.”
As part of the program, apartmentbuildings receive free signage and othermaterials that help them advertise thatthe building is now smoke free.
“After many years without a policy,I am so grateful we are now a smoke-free building,” said Kathy Boesen,Housing and RedevelopmentAuthority managing director forPlymouth Towne Square. “We havereceived information, building signsand major support as we proceededwith this venture.”
Tobacco-free parksYou can also start breathing a little
easier in several suburban HennepinCounty communities that recentlymade their park systems tobacco free.For example, Hopkins and Oronoadopted policies this past fall pro-hibiting the use of tobacco in cityparks, playgrounds, athletic fields,picnic areas and other recreationalvenues. As part of the program grant,both communities are receivingtobacco-free signs to post throughouttheir park areas to remind visitors ofthe new policy.
“As the mother of a toddler and afrequent park user, I am ecstatic thatthe city of Hopkins has taken this stepto protect my family from the dangersof secondhand smoke,” said Hopkinsresident Kerri Gordon. “It is justanother reason that we love living inthis community.”
Tobacco-free park policies impact thehealth of our communities by:
• Protecting park users from second-hand smoke. According to the U.S.Surgeon General, there is no risk-free
level of exposure to secondhandsmoke.
• Promoting positive, tobacco-freerole modeling to youth by keepingcoaches, parents and spectators fromusing tobacco during recreationalevents.
• Reducing toxic tobacco litter leftnear playgrounds, beaches and picnicareas. Cigarette butts litter the land-scape more than any other item in theworld. They pollute our waterways andcan poison children and animals thatingest them.
Ten of 126 Minnesota communitiesthat have tobacco-free policies for theirpark and recreational areas are in sub-urban Hennepin County: Champlin,Crystal, Dayton, Eden Prairie, GoldenValley, Hopkins, Maple Grove,Plymouth, Orono and Robbinsdale.

You may be surprised to learn that Indoor Air istypically 2 – 5 times more polluted than Outdoor Air.
According to the EPA “indoor pollution sources thatrelease particles into the air are the primary cause of indoorair quality problems.” Particles such as dust, dander, moldspores, pet hair, and pollens accumulate in your air ducts. ACommonwealth of Massachusetts study found indoor aircontaminants are “responsible for or aggravate half of all ill-nesses.” Industry manufacturer Trane notes “poor indoor airquality affects more than 15 million Americans who haveasthma and more than 28 million others who suffer from hayfever and other allergies”. An ongoing University of Albertastudy finds “Two thirds of our lifetime is spent inside ourhomes.” Accumulations in ducts can cause irritation of theeyes, nose, throat, headaches, and fatigue. Often the besttreatment is simply to remove and eliminate the pollutants atthe source by cleaning the air ducts.
Cleaning of your homes HVAC system is a routine partof home maintenance. Heating, ventilation, and air condi-tioning (HVAC) systems have been shown to act as collec-tion sources for a variety of contaminants. Mold, fungi,bacteria, pet hair, and very small particles of dust have thepotential to affect your health. Removal of such contami-nants should be considered as one component in an overallplan to improve indoor air quality. The design of HVACsystems causes contaminants to accumulate in your ducts.Cold air returns move air from rooms to the furnace and actas built in vacuums pulling contaminants from rooms intoyour ducts. They again become airborne each time the blow-er starts and are eventually redistributed into your home.The EPA notes that “house dust mites, pollens, animal dan-der, and other allergy agents can be reduced through regularcleaning”. AirBroom Minnesota has powerful professionalduct cleaning equipment and uses the industry standard“push-pull” process to remove contaminants from insideyour HVAC system.
You Can Keep Your System Clean By Using TheProper Furnace Filter. Once clean you can keep yourHVAC system clean longer using good filters. There arethree basic types. Fiberglass/polyester filters are least expen-sive but only protect your furnaces’ blower motor from largepieces of debris. Better are pleated filters that capture medi-um to fine particles with their greater collection area. Bestare electrostatic pleated filters with a Minimum EfficiencyReporting Value (MERV) of 10 or greater as recommendedby the American Lung Association. These trap the greatestamount of fine particulate and help keep micro-particles outof your indoor air. Check furnace filter(s) monthly andreplace every 90 days. An overly dirty filter may reduce theefficiency of your HVAC system leading to higher powerbills and lower indoor air quality.
Consider This. The EPA notes “Consumers shouldbeware of air duct cleaning companies making sweepingclaims about the health benefits of duct cleaning. Consumersshould also beware of “blow-and-go” air duct cleaning com-panies. These companies often charge a nominal fee and doa poor job of cleaning. These companies may also persuadethe consumer into unneeded services with and/or withouttheir permission.”

Shortly before the Eden Prairie CityCouncil would swear in its elected offi-cials, the Eden Prairie School Boardnominated its officers on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
There was not a School Board election in2010, but each year the Board elects SchoolBoard members for certain offices.

There are a number of city com-missions to provide opportunitiesfor citizen participation on issues
concerning Eden Prairie and itsresidents.

Task forces are assembled andappointed by the City Council on an“as-needed” basis when an issue needsto be further researched and reviewed.
Upon completion, a final task forcereport and recommendations are pro-vided to the City Council.

The Foundation for Eden PrairieSchools is once again hosting the Tasteof Eden Prairie 6-10 p.m., Saturday, Feb.26, at Minnesota Vikings Winter Park,9520 Viking Drive.

There are five Eden Prairie churchespartnering to offer a series, “Living andGrowing Through Loss,” to provide edu-cation and support to help individualsinvolved in the grieving process.
Each of the sessions will provideinformation and presentation of a topicof interest, as well as a time for sharingin small groups.
Sharing groups will be available foradults, suicide survivors, young adults(age 20-35), teens (age 13-19) and children(age 8-12).

The top-ranked Eaglesearned a 2-1 victory over third-rated Hill-Murray Jan. 6 toimprove their overall record to9-2.
According to Eden Prairiehead coach Lee Smith, theteam’s bus driver made a wrongturn in St. Paul while headedfor Aldrich Arena.
The driver tried turningaround in the parking lot of anursing home, but the bus gotstuck in a snowbank.
Eden Prairie’s players andcoaching staff decided to makea 20-minute walk down WhiteBear Avenue to get to the rinkin time for the battle of stateClass AA powers.
The hike didn’t seem toaffect the Eagles as they earneda hard-fought victory.

Hovey wins two individual titlesEden Prairie demonstrated it is a threat to win the state
Class AA boys swimming championship while performingwell in one of the biggest invitational meets of the regularseason.
The Eagles placed second in the Gold Division of theMaroon and Gold Invite Jan. 8 at the University of MinnesotaAquatic Center.
Eden Prairie was runner-up with 507 points. Minnetonkaplaced first with 563 points and Edina was third (474) in the 11-team Gold Division field.
Eden Prairie produced many impressive performances. TheEagles’ 200-yard medley relay team was first with a time of 1minute, 39.52 seconds. Members of that relay were MaverickHovey, Mathew Harris, Bryce Boston and Michael Solfelt.
Hovey was victorious in the 200 individual medley (1:57.18).Harris placed seventh in that event (2:04.45).
Solfelt finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (22.47). SamGunderson placed eighth in diving with 142.45 points.
Hovey added a first-place effort in the 100 butterfly (51.67).Boston was third in that event (52.44) and Jenia Foster finishedseventh (55.79).
Solfelt came in sixth in the 100 freestyle (49.49). JonathanLieberman and Evan Griffith finished fourth and fifth in the500 freestyle.
Boston had a third-place time of 54.87 in the 100 backstroke.Eden Prairie’s Evan Griffith was eighth in the 200 freestyle
(1:50.10).Eden Prairie concluded the meet by winning the 400

There is an abundance of talent returning forthe South Suburban Flyers adapted floor hockeyteam.
The Flyers compete in the Physically Impaired (PI)Division. Squad members are student-athletes ingrades 7-12 from Eden Prairie, Edina, Bloomington andRichfield.
The South Suburban Flyers were scheduled to openthe season in the Team 25 Adapted Floor HockeyInvitational Tournament Jan. 7-8 at Rochester CenturyHigh School.
This year’s captains are Eden Prairie seniors RobertDoyle and Sam Rasmussen.
Flyers’ junior players are Rachel Rosenthal andChris Reichel from Edina, Nick Nieson and MarkMcDaniel from Eden Prairie, Karen Kriedler ofRichfield and Jessi Bean of Bloomington Jefferson.
The Flyers also hope to get contributions from soph-omores Alex Furber (Jefferson) and DeQuan Williams(Kennedy).
South Suburban ninth-grade players are DanSchmitz (Kennedy) and Callie Johnson (EdenPrairie).
Edina’s Jackson Lowe and Eden Prairie’s JakeYancy are eighth-grade members of the team.
The team also has four seventh graders, all fromEdina – Danny Moffert, Patrick Moffatt, Andrew Spartzand Alexei Dickinson.
“I am very excited about our team,” said Flyers headcoach Dan Slinden.
“Kriedler is back after leading us in scoring last sea-son with 45 goals.
“Nieson was tops in assists with 19 and Doyleadded 13 goals and 18 assists. Those three playersmake up our first line and I expect big numbersfrom that group.”
Furber is expected to be the Flyers’ starting goal-tender, according to Slinden. Providing defensive sup-port are Schmitz and Reichel.
South Suburban will count heavily on other return-ing letter-winners such as Bean, Rosenthal, McDaniel,Rasmussen, Lowe and Yancy.
The South Suburban Flyers will travel toRosemount to play Dakota United at 6:30 p.m.Thursday, Jan. 13.

Nick Leddy was a member of the USAhockey team that won the bronze medalin the World Junior Championships lastweek in Buffalo, N.Y.
Leddy, a defenseman, was creditedwith one assist during the U.S. team’s 4-2 victory over Switzerland in the third-place game Jan. 5. He was one of fiveMinnesotans on the U.S. team.
Leddy is a member of the ChicagoBlackhawks organization.
Leddy earned All-State and Mr. Hockeyhonors during his prep career at EdenPrairie. Leddy went on to play at theUniversity of Minnesota before turning pro.

Haake signed with a professionalorganization in Germany calledMunchen Basket. He was scheduled toplay his first pro game Jan. 8.
The Munchen Basket squad competesin the third tier of the organizationagainst other teams in Germany. He isthe only American on the team.
Haake played for BSU from 2006-10.Haake averaged 18.6 points per game as asenior and finished with 1,202 career points.
