Darren LaCroix to Headline Fall 2009 District 47 Conference
Darren LaCroix, the 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, and a successful author and comedian, will be a special guest of District 47 for its Fall Conference. Dar-ren has traveled the world demystifying the process of creating a powerful speech to
share his passion.
Darren says that he was “born without a funny bone in my body”, but was possessed with the desire to learn and the willingness to fail as necessary to achieve his dream. He is a self-proclaimed “student of comedy”, living proof that humor is a skill that
can be learned.
Conference attendees will hear three exciting pres-entations from Darren during the conference. His keynote speech on Friday evening is entitled “Humor and Hope”. At a Saturday general session, he will present “Speaking outside Toastmasters for Fun, Profit and Club Building”, in which he will explain why we need to get outside our clubs to speak in order to publicize what we do and foster
prospective members.
Sunday morning there’ll be a special educational workshop with Darren entitled “How to Own the Stage / Live Coaching”. During his preparation for the World Championship of Public Speaking, Darren studied ten years worth of World Championship
speeches over and over again. He discovered what separates the person who wins from the person who comes in second. The winners had three points in common. Want to know what they are? Come to the program and hear it directly from Darren! Par-ticipants will have an opportunity to give 1 to 2-minute mini-speeches and receive instant feedback
from a master speaker coach!
The District 47 Fall Conference will take place Fri-day October 30 through Sunday November 1 at the fabulous Hilton Naples Hotel in beautiful Naples,
Florida.
This fantastic weekend will be filled with educa-tional sessions, Evaluation and Humorous Speech contests, networking opportunities, banquets, and meetings for First Timers, our new D47 Speakers Bureau and the semi-annual District Business Coun-cil. This will be more FUN than Toastmasters
should be allowed to have!
Online registration for this terrific event will begin in mid-August on the District 47 website, at http://www.toastmastersd47.org. At that time hotel rates and registration information will also be
available.
All members, future members, family mem-
bers and friends are welcome!

From the Top Chef There is a trend around the world to watch reality TV shows. There are so many to choose from – Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Big Brother, Project
Runway, and many more.
They include traveling around the globe, being stranded on a desert island, eating live bugs, cutting hair, sewing clothes, being a designer, dancing,
and singing and on and on. And then there is the Top Chef!
The star of the kitchen! The artist of the produce that makes our senses flourish – first the enticing aroma; then the creative presentation and then
finally the irresistible flavor – aaaahhhhhh.
Now, you would think I know my way around a kitchen, but this is not the case. I am however trying. Every time I try a new recipe it’s like the Ice Breaker. Maybe a little nerve-wrecking, making sure I have the right “ingredients”, looking at the “notes” and hopefully, my “mentor” is there
to walk me through it (in my case it’s the fire squad).
As I practice the same recipe it gets better and easier. Soon, I can do it without the recipe in front of me. No more burning pots and pans and I’m
even able to add some variations and flair.
My challenges in the kitchen are like our Toastmaster journey. We have to start somewhere; boiling eggs and eating cereal is only going to get me so far. As we learn, we try more extravagant recipes and more interesting or exotic ingredients. We buy new cookbooks and we want to share our reci-
pes with anyone who wants to hear, I mean sample.
We graduate to making our own recipes; we become so CONFIDENT that we know which ingredients to best pair up to make our mouth’s drool. Our
kitchen becomes a sanctuary where we flourish, create and serve.
Would the Chef ever stop creating new recipes? Are we ever done on our Toastmaster journey? There is always something more and new to try. Dig in! Toastmasters is
the best feast in town!

‘Tis the Season!
Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) is the District’s full day training of club officers. It is offered twice a year, and we provide the opportunity to gather with fellow District leaders for education, entertainment and,
of course, DCP points!
The energy and enthusiasm explodes when there is a room with hundreds of Toastmasters listening, laughing and networking. TLI is the building block of a strong club. When your officers are trained, your club is sta-ble. When your officers are trained at the District level (TLI), they are
injected with insight and information that inspires them.
We have had three great TLIs and many make-up trainings. Our goal is to train all seven officers in each club. If you haven’t yet been trained, con-tact your Area Governor and get to the next training. The deadline for
training is August 31st.
Get trained so you can “Get the Toastmaster’s Edge!”
Here is another seasonal opportunity - one of the fastest ways to become a better speaker is to move outside your comfort zone and compete in a
contest.
The pressure of competing in a contest brings the best out in everyone!
What you learn about yourself is priceless.
Even if you are not competing, you will gain so much knowledge by ob-serving other speakers. That’s a great reason to not only observe your
club contests but also your Area, Division and District contests as well.
I had a wonderful experience when I went on a cruise with four of the World Champions two years ago. The biggest thing I took away from our
experience was this one thing they had in common:
Competition changed their lives!
They all agreed that the competition didn’t just improve them a little
bit, it improved them exponentially!
Each of these World Champions realized it wasn’t about winning. . .it was about connecting with the audience and doing the very best they could,
for that audience. That is what made them such great speakers.
Compete . . . and “Get the Toastmaster’s Edge”.

Members Make It Happen!
That’s right! Every goal we achieve this year will be possible because of YOU, the members. Our success on June 30, 2010 will only be possible because of your commitment and dedication to the Toastmasters program and of course, to District 47. Together we can meet and exceed our
goals.
Earl Nightingale said, “Success is the continuous realization of a worthy goal”. How do we achieve success? We achieve success by taking advan-
tage of the tools given to us by Toastmasters International.
Why not take advantage of the opportunity to become a Mentor or Club
Coach? How about recruiting new members for our clubs?
It is amazing what we can learn by allowing ourselves to become the trainer and develop our leadership skills. That’s the beauty of this pro-
gram.
Success is also achieved by motivating and encouraging our members to reach their full potential. The District Trio realizes that it will take lots of hard work to meet these objectives and we are committed to recogniz-
ing and rewarding your accomplishments.
Together, we will have a dynamic, fun filled year of helping our Clubs
achieve membership goals.
This year, the District Trio introduced the District 47 ‘More Members Pro-gram’ from July 20 to September 20. Read more about it and other club
opportunities in this issue of the Sunshiner.
We will work together to encourage all clubs to become Distinguished. Let’s focus on recruiting NEW members and planning ahead to pay our club dues on time to World Headquarters. These are the easy things that
can make us successful!
Just imagine, if every member does his or her part and if all club officers do their part and if each Area and Division Governor do their part; we
WILL be an unstoppable team!
Let the world know about Toastmasters! Let’s not hide the secret!

Treasurer
Hello everyone,
My name is Lazarus Sanchez, my friends call me Laz, please call me Laz. I’m the District 47 Treasurer and I am also the VPE of Freddy’s Forum in West Palm Beach (voted best club in the world by Freddy’s Forum members). Check out my
totally photo-shopped picture here.
I’m taking the District 47 Treasurer responsibilities from Jeanine Kinsey. Before I go any further, I want to take this opportunity to thank Jeanine for the phe-nomenal job she did as D47 Treasurer. I just came back from the semi-annual District 47 financial audit
and there were no issues found.
Basically that means our financial records were all in order and more importantly the District Treasurer did a fantastic job safe guarding our District assets. This is a significant accomplishment and a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our past Treasurer Jeanine Kinsey. She’s also been instrumental in helping me understand the role and the responsibili-ties of the District Treasurer. I’m so grateful for her
support, her mentoring, and most of all, her friendship.
Now, some important District 47 business.
• The District 47 leadership team is finalizing the 2009-2010 District operating budget. I expect to have the budget ready for review and approval at the DEC meeting on September 12, when all Clubs can vote at the District Council Meeting on October
31st at the Fall Conference in Naples.
• Get ready, dues season is quickly approaching. We want to pay dues as soon as possible. The Toastmas-ters online dues payment system opens for us on
Thursday September 10th.
• Reminder: if you’re a member of a corporate club where your dues are paid by your company, please be sure to get that process started early so you don’t
miss the dues deadline date.
• What date is the dues deadline anyway? You should have your club dues paid online and entered on Toastmasters International’s website no later than Friday September 25th. If you’re not sure how to pay your dues online, please contact me and I’ll be
glad to show you.
In closing I want to let you all know that I’m very ex-cited to be the new District 47 Treasurer; my focus is to build upon all the good things that have been done to improve the position of District Treasurer. I’m here
to serve you.

Your Compassionate Communicator
We are pleased to introduce a new addition to the District 47 team: our Compassionate Communicator.
This position will be held by Cathy Koyanagi.
The Compassionate Communicator’s role is to extend to our District members sympathy, acknowledge-
ments, and well wishes as is appropriate per occasion.
Our District is a large extended family under the um-brella of Toastmasters International. We have seen the changes Toastmasters makes in our lives as we speak and develop, and we have all experienced the warmth of acceptance and the feeling of being em-
braced by other Toastmasters during rough times.
In our world today, it is rare to have family members residing close by. Our Toastmaster community be-comes our extended family and we develop lifelong
friendships.
If you know of the passing of a Toastmaster, the birth of a child, a “big” birthday or similar occasion, please send a note to our Compassionate Mailbox using this link on the District 47 website
http://toastmastersd47.org or to
District Governor Kristina Kihlberg. Let us know the name, which Club

Heading for the Top!
District Governor Kristina Kihlberg has declared our objective for the 2009-2010 year to again achieve President’s Distinguished District, which is in itself a conspicuous honor, but to go beyond, reaching the first and highest honor of the world’s
81 districts!
Ambitious? You bet! But we can do it! District 47 is a terrific District built upon a solid history of good leadership and we will do it! The combina-tion of dedicated Toastmasters and our “go the extra mile” leaders coupled with our theme Confi-dence—Leadership—Service is the sure path to
victory!
But let’s look back in time at some of the events that have led District 47 to the enviable position
of heading for the top in 2009-2010.
The year was 1955 when Marine Corps Master Ser-geant Ira Callman founded District 47,thereby making possible the following succession of in-creasingly higher achievements. Since its incep-tion, our District has helped more than 100,000 men and women become better listeners, think-ers, and speakers. A history of which we may all be very proud and which spurs us on to greater
heights!
Future articles in this column will offer details concerning our rich history. Those will include news from 1973 when women were welcomed into the Toastmasters program and when our neighbors
in the beautiful Bahamas joined District 47.
There will be an article on our own DTM John Diaz who served as District 47s only International Presi-dent. Other historic subjects will include early Distinguished Toastmasters Awards, including PDG Karl Righter (badge #51). Outstanding contributors to the successes in District 47 awarded Interna-tional President’s Citation were PDGs Frank and Dr. Ann Tillman, Dave Meeks, Karl Righter, and
Mark Majcher.
There are so many inspiring individual Toastmas-ters and events to tell about! We have a base of strength supporting our determined effort to be-come the top District in the entire world! This
victory is doable and we will win it!
District 47 Governor Kristina Kihlberg has made a promise to us all that we will see the fullest meas-ure of Confidence, Leadership, and Service in ac-tion. She has asked, “Are you with me?” You bet we are, Madame District Governor! You bet we
are!
Chop, chop! Let’s get it done!

Toastmaster Tips
Here are a few pointers when using notes to speak. They come from the August edition of Toastmaster Magazine. Be sure to read the complete article “The Script as Friend and Foe” for full details. Ensure That The Lectern is High Enough. Work on Your Speed-Reading Skills. Adjust Your Body Language. Put More Expression Into Your Voice. Thanks to Chuck Wilson, President of Early Bird Toast-masters Club#3659 in Ft. Lauderdale who submitted
this information for our attention.
This contest clarification comes directly from TIWHQ.
QUERY: Should a speaker be disqualified if he or she steps out of the speech area while speaking. ANSWER: The only reasons a speaker can be disquali-fied is due to eligibility, originality or being over or
under the time limits.
The speaking area is something judges can use to make their decision of what placement to award the speaker, but is not meant as something which a speaker can be disqualified for. Instead, the judge can decide whether the speaker's choice to stray from the speaking area caused the speech to be more or
less effective and thus determine their placement.
As Toastmasters, we can think creatively to find the many community opportunities for teaching people the great advantages of Toastmasters for public speaking. Sarasota Herald-Tribune Toastmasters Club President Bill Birdsong, and I recently gave a three hour workshop called “Public Speaking 101: Toast-master Style”. It took place last month at the invita-tion of the Community Foundation of Sarasota
County, Sarasota, Florida.
The Foundation is for non-profit organizations and has a unique funding base, with wonderful facilities, programs and education that they offer to those who work at non-profit organizations. Many of the more than 40 participants, were already in speaking posi-tions, desiring to move to a higher level. This work-shop was very popular, we were told, because so many want to improve their speaking skills, especially
in this economy.
Bill and I gave a fun (of course, it was Toastmaster style!), comprehensive workshop including: inspira-tion, Icebreaker audience exercises, overview of pub-lic speaking, overview of toastmasters, a listening exercise (Pungent Preceptor included!). The latter was done in small groups. Wow, they really got into
that one!
In the second hour, Bill and I taught the fundamentals of public speaking, including selecting your topic, knowing your audience, preparing/organizing/writing your speech and rehearsing it. Then we addressed the “Elephant in the Room”, the #1 fear of public speaking. Concluding this session was the actual de-livery of the speech, with body language, vocal vari-ety, connecting with the audience, “rule of the lec-
tern”, effective endings.
The third hour started with a talk on humor, including funny stories and humor techniques. Then Bill and I had various improvisational exercises as well as Toastmaster interactive parts. These included a meet and greet improv, (lots of laughs by all!!), Table Topics (yes, we actually got six people up there to talk!!), and a crazy choir improv exercise. In the crazy choir, I conducted all 40 plus people in making “crazy noises” (each voice section had their own noise they chose). Purpose? To increase spontaneity, confidence, better public speaking, and to get rid of the fear of embarrassment! It was so funny we de-
cided we could take it on the road!
I wanted to share this with other Toastmasters to get you thinking about creative ways to reach out to the community. The benefits of Toastmasters are great,
as we Toastmasters know, but others do not!

Youth Leadership in Action
This past April and May, Plantation Toastmasters ran four sets of Youth Leadership classes at Our Savior Lu-theran School. When school let out the first week of June, 51 middle school students between the ages of
10 and 14 had participated in our program.
Anyone who has entertained the idea of running a Youth Leadership program is likely to have heard sto-ries of how challenging it is to get a school or club to partner with. It is also more than likely to have heard about how amazing and rewarding those Youth Leader-
ship programs are that take off.
After months of pitching the value of Toastmasters and our program, the principal at Our Savior Lutheran School asked if we could run not one, but four sets of
classes.
The reaction from Plantation Toastmasters was over-whelming and positive! Immediately, three other Toastmasters and I were set to act as Coordinators. We also had a set of back up Toastmasters who would fill in when necessary. Out of all of those who partici-pated, only one was able to use it for TM accreditation.
This was an opportunity to share.
Beginning in April, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2pm, a Plantation Toastmaster would run a meeting for Our Savior’s fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes. We were quickly faced with the very real challenge of keeping these children engaged, participating and learning about the tools they would
need as they went off to college and became adults.
With Youth Leadership manuals in hand, the first class went smoothly. Our students were attentive and en-gaged and everyone took to their assignments. We were on our way. Those classes that followed were definitely more challenging. Any teacher can relate to
the effort it takes to keep children pointed in the right direction. Our classes were full of diverse personali-ties. Like a traditional Toastmasters meeting, there were those who easily thrived, who worked to achieve, class clowns and those who had, at best, a fleeting in-
terest. It was quite a challenge.
By the end of April something surprising happened – the children seemed to take the classes and make them their own. One day Juan Reyes, who ran the Tuesday class, was running late. When he arrived, the meeting was already in full swing, the program President had called the meeting to order, the Vice President was watching the time and the first speaker was giving her speech. At this point it became clear that something
important was happening.
If you belong to Toastmasters, you know that becoming a competent public speaker takes a lot of time and dedication. By the time the Plantation Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program had run its two month course, we were able to provide four grades of stu-dents with some of the initial public speaking tools
they will use and build upon throughout their lives.
This was an outstanding opportunity for the students at Our Savior and for Plantation Toastmasters. I could not be more proud of my club for what we accomplished. It was not just my dedication, nor the dedication of Shantelle Moxie, Juan Reyes, Joe Timmons, Darlene Hnatiw, Dyanna Jamiel or Carolina Small that made this possible. Every member of Plantation Toastmasters made this happen. This is an achievement that will
reap rewards for all of us well into the future.
The Youth Leadership Program is about taking a step beyond and striving to be the best. Without doubt, this
is what Toastmasters is all about.
The many smiling faces of the Youth Leadership class at Our Savior Lutheran School. Congratulations to them for
their hard work as the future leaders in their community!
Kudos to Plantation Toastmasters Youth Leadership team led by VPPR Wolf Liebertz. Thanks to Wolf for submitting this story and the excellent work of all the Plantation
Toastmasters for making this happen!
