EP delivery service bringsyou the food you wantBY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Who hasn’t wanted food deliveredfrom a restaurant that does not offer suchconvenience?

Well, Eden Prairie dreamers, say helloto FNS Delivery. The drivers pick up foodfrom wherever you want – whether it’sfast food or fine dining – and for $5 theywill take it to you.

It’s just about that simple.FNS, short for Food and Stuff, started

with hotel deliveries in Eden Prairie lastfall.

Luke Katuin, the 29-year-old who hadthe idea, started a similar operation inMankato while attending college there. But, it didn’t get busy enough to fit hisdefinition of success, he said.

“My wife graduated college, moved uphere, so the FNS dream in Mankatodied,” Katuin said.

So, when they moved to the TwinCities, he didn’t know how to apply the

idea to such a large area. Then, he visited a former co-worker

and friend, Elijah Edwards, who wasworking at a hotel front desk in EdenPrairie.

Hotel guests kept coming down, ask-ing where to get food in the area, Katuinsaid.

Edwards would tell guests there aren’tany options within walking distance, andbasically just pizza and subs can be deliv-ered.

But, Katuin, who lives in Eden Prairie,

knew the city had more to offer than that. After seeing people walk away defeatedand unsatisfied, it sparked an answer tohis question about infiltrating the TwinCities with his delivery business.

“I said, ‘Elijah, eureka. You’ve done it.You’re my partner. You’ve done it,’”Katuin said.

It was simple. They would start deliv-ering food – food from any restaurant inthe area – to hotel guests.

Edwards became his partner, alongwith a third, Alex Sanchez, who takes

care of the FNS website and helps withother operations, Edwards said.

After helping hotel guests and gainingsome momentum from front-desk work-ers who recommended their deliveryservice, they moved on to Eden Prairieresidents.

Rather than expand to hotels outsideEden Prairie, the idea was to “bringeverything in Eden Prairie to EdenPrairie,” Katuin said.

By delivering food from Eden Prairierestaurants to Eden Prairie residents, they could keep delivery times down andnot worry about delivering too far away.

With a strong Twitter, Facebook andwebsite presence, along with growingword-of-mouth and catchy promotions, the business keeps growing every month,Katuin said.

They have an office in Edina; theyhave hired independent-contract drivers;expanded to West Bloomington and soonHopkins; and they have partnered with18 Eden Prairie restaurants and 11 WestBloomington restaurants in particular,

Yes, you can get that delivered, nowEvery Tuesday, the company posts a

random question on Facebook andTwitter, and whoever types the founders’favorite answer gets a free lunch.

One question: “What’s the mostrisqué thing you have ever done foreither a bet or a dare?”

The winner’s answer is probably notsuitable for print.

Once a month, they also surprisesomeone with a free lunch. They ask cus-tomers to nominate someone whodeserves a free lunch, find out the besttime and location to deliver it, and sur-prise them with the food, balloons andother fanfare, Katuin said. They are alsoarmed with a video camera to capturethe surprise.

Eden Prairie man diesafter alleged overdoseBY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS

A woman held in a jail for allegedthird-degree murder in Eden Prairiewas released Friday, July 8, pendingcriminal charges, which are expected tofile once toxicology reports from herdeceased 42-year-old husband are com-plete, according to city spokeswomanKatie Beal.

A 29-year-old woman was arrestedfollowing a 42-year-old man’s death afterEden Prairie authorities responded to areported drug overdose the evening ofWednesday, July 6, according to Beal.

It is unclear what drugs wereinvolved in the incident, and the toxi-cology report, which would indicatewhat drugs were in the man’s body, could take a couple weeks to complete,Beal said. Authorities are waiting onthe toxicology report before filing anycharges.

Police initially did not state the rela-tionship between the man and woman, but Beal said Monday that they were

married.Eden Prairie dispatch received the

call around 11 p.m. Wednesday regard-ing an alleged overdose on the 15600block of North Hillcrest Court, accord-ing to Beal.

The man was unconscious and trans-ported to Fairview Southdale Hospitalin Edina, where he was pronounceddead, Beal said.

The woman was arrested at the sceneand was being held in a HennepinCounty jail on probable cause of third-degree murder, Beal said. Jail recordsindicate she was booked at 7:13 a.m.Thursday.

Since no charges were filed, she wasreleased just before 7 p.m. Friday.

Another adult female and a childwere also present, but she was not takeninto custody, Beal said.

Eden Prairie police and theHennepin County Sheriff's crime labare investigating the incident, so no fur-ther details could be provided, Bealsaid.

Uniform drive helps outfit scout for campBY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Kris Hinderscheid of Hastings is thetreasurer for Boy Scout Troop 534. Herfamily goes through a lot of uniforms.

She and her husband have four sonswho have all been involved in Boy Scoutsor Cub Scouts. The boys outgrow uni-forms quickly. Kris’s husband also volun-teers as an assistant scoutmaster andmust wear a uniform.

When Kris’s oldest son, 13-year-oldKalvin, was nominated by his scoutmas-ter to attend the exclusive, week-longGrey Wolf Leadership Camp inWisconsin this year, he needed to be out-fitted with a full uniform first.

“We wanted to make sure he had every-thing he needed,” she said.

Hinderscheid believes the uniform isan important part of the Scouting experi-ence.

“When the boys wear the uniform, they should be wearing it with pride,” she

said.Kalvin thinks the uniform is an identi-

fying mark for Scouts and it lets othersknow “that guy’s in Scouts.”

Hinderscheid was willing to invest inthe full outfit for Kalvin, which includesshirts, a neckerchief, shorts, pants, socksand headgear. But buying everything newwould have placed some financial pres-sure on the single-income household.

Hinderscheid turned to the Boy ScoutsNorthern Star Council uniform exchangeprogram. The exchange program is avail-able twice a month and allows scouts tocome to the office in Golden Valley andfind used uniforms for free with a sug-gested donation if the family feels able togive.

The program is supported largely byuniform donations collected during theScouting for Uniforms campaign held bythe Northern Star Council and PilgrimCleaners during the month of July.

Hinderscheid reached out to other

members of Troop 534 and collected a listof “orders” of items needed by scouts inthe area. Then three families made thetrek to visit the exchange and fill as manyorders as they could.

Kalvin found everything he needed, and Hinderscheid estimates that about 12other scouts in the troop also receivedneeded pieces for their uniforms.

“It’s a great program,” Hinderscheidsaid. “It’s a blessing for many people.”

She estimates that paying the suggest-ed donations for uniforms cost her lessthan an eighth of the price for new uni-forms.

“For us to be able to outfit our son tohave the privilege to go to camp washuge,” she said.

Hinderscheid said when her boys aredone with a uniform, they pass it on toothers. She appreciates how the exchangeprogram makes it easy to share uniformswith those who need them.

“I just think that it gives you an oppor-

tunity to give back, and it makes it veryaffordable for families, especially in thiseconomy,” she said. “And there’s no sensein wasting items … someone should beable to reuse them.”

It’s especially easy to donate uniformsduring the month of July. Uniforms canbe dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleanerslocations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday throughFriday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Thenearest location can be found at pil-grimdrycleaners.com.

Uniforms can also be dropped off atthe Golden Valley Scout Service Center,5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul ScoutService Center, 393 Marshall Ave between8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday throughSaturday.

Monetary contributions should be sentto Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: KentYork, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley,MN 55422.

What are you doing to MY state park?Editor’s note: I’m not going

to deal with the nitty-gritty ofthe state shutdown. Mostly, because politics are a trickyanimal, and I won’t pretend Ihave any sort of solution forthe current predicament. Thereare other related issues, howev-er, that really get my goat andneed addressing.

I’m bummed about theMinnesota state shutdown.Mostly bummed because itmeans my favorite summeractivity — heading to WilliamO’Brien State Park in Marine-on-St. Croix, Minn. — isn’tpossible at the moment. ButI’m particularly upset becauseI had a sneaking suspicion the

shutdown and subsequent clo-sure of the parks would leave agaping hole wherein low-lifevandals could step in andharm something important tome as a nature enthusiast andMinnesotan.

In case you didn’t hear, numerous media outlets arereporting extensive vandalismat Afton State Park, damage toDepartment of NaturalResources facilities in Grand

Marais and other issues atparks across the state.Absolutely senseless andpointless acts that served onlyto ruin a shared naturalresource.

I love state parks. I feel athome in them so it’s tough toavoid the “get-off-my-lawn-you-kids” impulse here.

Setting aside, for a moment, the fact that as a stateresource, the parks are fundedat last partially through taxdollars making it silly forHoodlum A to destroy publicproperty that Hoodlum A(assuming he pays taxes)would have to help fund torepair, the main issue to me isthe idea that the minute some-

one isn’t watching it’s some-how permissible to forget allsocietal mores and act likeyahoos.

Public property, be it a statepark or an interstate highway, exists as a service we provideourselves. We, the taxpayers, fund these public facilitieswith the common goal of allbeing able to access the out-doors or drive across the coun-try. We, the taxpayers, areresponsible for responsibleuse of such facilities.

It’s a sad day when theminute our collective backs (inthe form of park personnel)are turned some people feelthe need or desire to rampagethrough our mutual property.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Birch Island Woodsparking lot wouldhurt its integrity To the editor:

Eden Prairie resident JeffStrate has been keeping meupdated on the Birch IslandWoods since the days of its ardu-ous creation and subsequent out-side development threats. Mostrecently, he informed me aboutthe controversial proposal to puta parking lot inside this other-wise peaceful area.

Jeff and I share land useissues in the Southwest andNortheast suburbs. I currentlyserve on Lake Elmo’s ParksCommission and was a councilmember for 16 years. We’ve bothtoured our respective openspaces and trails with considera-tion for habitat preservation, aswell as public access and thelong-term benefit to our resi-dents.

Your Birch Island Woods is a

treasure, and I share the con-cerns of Jeff and othersaddressed in local newspapersand before the Nine Mile CreekWatershed District – which isapparently prepared to enablethe parking lot construction witha $25,000 grant.

The use of water qualityimprovement funds to facilitate aparking lot in a conservationarea is a new concept to me, andan expansion of the taxingauthority of watershed districtsthat I hope is not shared with mydistrict.

Eden Prairie is widely regard-ed as one of the metro area’s best-planned cities, but I agree withJeff that while parking lots arenecessary in large recreationalparks, they are rarely needed insmall conservation spaces suchas the Birch Island Woods. Thispreserve, and others like it,should remain the green placesthat are the lungs of a healthycity. Anything that detracts fromthis showcase of habitat restora-tion projects that Jeff has shep-

arded for a decade should bereconsidered.

During our concurrent serv-ice on the Minnesota Land TrustBoard of Directors, Jeff helpedthree Eden Prairie residents andan entire neighborhood protectthe future of their propertieswith conservation easements. Ofthe two protected properties thatare on Nine Mile Creek, BarbaraKaerwar’s has been donated toNine Mile Creek WatershedDistrict. It is odd that this agencyis now promoting a project inanother part of Eden Prairie thatis contrary to its mission and theenvironmental well-being of asmall preserve.

Insist onaccountability To the editor:

Eden Prairie students haveachieved success with the sup-port of dedicated teachers and

involved parents. We should rec-ognize these achievements, butwe must also openly discuss theissues that are impacting ourschool district.

Recently, the Eden Prairieschool administration spent$20,000 on a survey to rank vari-ous “talking points” on their abil-ity to convince taxpayers to sup-port a proposed referendum. This is in addition to the $50,000the administration is spendingfor a consultant to tell taxpayerswhat to “think, feel, and do” asdescribed by one school boardmember.

These talking points presentonly one side of the story. Beforeyou vote on the referendum thisfall, do your research, ask yourboard members questions and donot accept “non-answers.”

Ask what has contributed tothe multi-million dollar budgetshortfall? Is it a tough economyor is it discretionary spending onboundary changes, excessive

Yikes. No mention of whatthe writer might have thoughtabout the topic. Just kvetching.Riding high in April, shotdown in May. That’s life, I sup-

pose.The second most common

response tends to take the“who cares about your opin-ion” approach. Mind you, thesewriters never bother to tell ustheir opinion, they simplywant us to know that we arenot entitled to ours.

For instance, a column Iwrote recently about the baneof fireworks drew a one-sen-tence response from an indi-vidual who accused me ofadvocating a “nanny state.”

That’s a term used to try toput writers who believe some-times people need to be told

what to do in their place. Theplace is usually under the jack-boot of the person using theterm.

Actually, my plea to ban fire-works had nothing to do withthe nanny state. You see, idiotswho abuse fireworks causebuildings to burn down. Eachtime one catches fire, my taxdollars or yours (depending onwhere you live) are expendedto pay salaries for firefighters.

Taxpayer-funded police andfire departments both gotinvolved in Fargo over the July4 holiday when a man wasstruck and killed by a mortar-style firework.

So my column was more of aplea to eliminate one morething taxpayers have to sup-port with their hard-earneddollars. Quite different fromthe idea of a nanny state. Heck,

it’s almost libertarian. What is it that stops you

from expressing your view-point on this page? We doeverything possible to make itsimple for readers to write let-ters to the editor. We’ve tossedmost of the rules out the win-dow to allow more exchangesof opinions.

We are thankful to the letter-writers who do participate, butmany of them fall into the“endless political campaign-ing” category. Frankly, thoseletters leave me personallywanting to retch.

Which proves that there isno litmus test per se for lettersto the editor. I’ll swallow hardand place them on a page, nomatter the topic.

We do ask that you writewithin the bounds of goodtaste and keep your thoughts

short and succinct. Those of uswho write these columns try tokeep it short and sweet becausewe know readers have busylives and don’t want to spendhalf a day reading an opinioncolumn.

You can use the electronicform for letters found on ourwebsite or you can simplyemail your letter. Written andtyped submissions are alsowelcome, although bothrequire they be keyed into oursystem, which can delay publi-cation.

We will continue to try tostrike a nerve with ourcolumns and hopefully one dayyou’ll read something that con-vinces you to either agree ordisagree strongly enough towrite in.

We’re looking forward tohearing from you.

spending on non-education relatedprograms or lost funding due to stu-dents fleeing our district?

Certainly, students leaving ourdistrict are a significant factor. Eachlost student represents more than$5,000 in lost funding per year. Eachstudent that starts kindergarten inanother district may represent$60,000 in lost funding during her K-12 education career. Although the

administration has not confirmedthe number of students that will beleaving our district this fall, it is esti-mated to be more than 300 studentsrepresenting more than $1.5 millionannually in lost funding.

One referendum proposal wouldincrease taxes on a median pricedhome by $172 per year. For perspec-tive, it would take 29 taxpayers pay-ing $172 more per year to make upfor the $5,000 in lost funding associ-ated with just one lost student and8,700 taxpayers to compensate for300 lost students. Is it the responsi-

bility of taxpayers to compensate forthis administration’s inability toretain students in our district?

For three decades I have paidproperty taxes and have generallysupported school referendums. However, taxpayers should insist ongreater transparency, accountabilityand responsiveness before entrust-ing this administration withincreased tax funding. Let’s set theright course before we spend moremoney.

The joy of singingTwin Cities Show Chorussees success incompetition, charity workBY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Winning is important, but it is noteverything as the Twin Cities ShowChorus is all about the joy of singing.

The Twin Cities Show Chorus is achapter in the Canadian-AmericanRegion Six and is affiliated with theglobal singing organization known asSweet Adelines International.

The group features women from theages of 18 to 80 among its more than 65members.

Traveling from as far as Wisconsinand as close as Richfield, Edina andBloomington, the Twin Cities ShowChorus rehearses every Tuesday nightfrom 7-10 p.m. at the United MethodistChurch of Peace in Richfield or theCalvary Lutheran Church in Edina.

Celebrating 35 years together, thegroup is led by Master Director JudyOlson.

“We have been lucky to have anartistic director that can really dance,”member and Lead Section CoordinatorWendy Hamilton said.

Olson is an accomplished choreogra-pher and a member of the SweetAdelines International Music Faculty.Traveling frequently, Olson coacheschoruses and quartets in staging, cho-reography and performance tech-niques.

The Twin Cities Show Chorus is notjust a group of women who just want tosing, they are a support group and ateam, according to Hamilton.

In 1993, Hamilton was diagnosedwith breast cancer.

“I didn’t need to find a supportgroup. These women are my supportgroup,” Hamilton said of the chorushelping her through her time of need.

The Twin Cities Show Chorus performs a song from their set list. Members say the group is about morethan singing as charity and mutual support factor largely as well. (Photo by Billie Jo Rassat • SunNewspapers)

Now a healthy cancer survivor,Hamilton swears the women in theTwin Cities Show Chorus and singingsaved her life.

“Our singing keeps us young andhealthy,” Hamilton states.

This group is not just limited to thetalents of their voices.

The Twin Cities Show Chorus isinvolved in supporting and fundraising

for causes like Dress for Success, GoingGreen Shopping Bags, Susan G. KomenFor the Cure, Project Linus, HarrietTubman Center for Battered Womenand the Special Olympics.

The group also puts a large amountof time and effort into the YoungWomen in Harmony program.

Sponsored by Sweet AdelinesInternational, the program offersmusic educators a means of includingthe study and performance of barber-shop harmony in school music pro-grams.

The aim is to provide materials, training and performance opportuni-

ties for the American musical art formof barbershop, according to the web-site.

“We hold a all-day event, teachingthe girls two songs, with the choreogra-phy, and then put on a performance inthe afternoon,” Hamilton said.

This cause is very important to thechorus because of the decline in musicprograms due to budget cuts, accordingto Hamilton.

Giving back to the community is apriority to the Twin Cities ShowChorus, but so is singing.

As a result of their practice and ded-ication, the Twin Cities Show Chorus

was named the 2010 RegionalChampions and will go on to competein Houston, Texas, against 50 otherchoruses in October.

“Everyone that goes up on that stageis a winner,” Hamilton said.

In Dick Thorud’s world of ideas, there’salways a better way.

During his 34 years as a design andresearch engineer for the Toro Company, building a better lawn mower or snowthrower was his goal.

Creative problem-solving was hismethod.

“I didn’t know that they would work,”said Thorud of his inventions. “That’s theexcitement of the whole thing, that some-times you can come up with great ideas.Sometimes they work and sometimes theydon’t.”

Thorud was a prolific inventor, earning78 U.S. and international patents, saidLarry Buckley, division counsel for Toro. Many of Thorud’s innovations are stillused in Toro products and they played animportant part in the company’s successin the residential lawn mower and snowthrower markets, Buckley said. Last year, the Bloomington-based company reported$1.7 billion in sales.

In recognition of his accomplishments,Thorud was inducted into the MinnesotaInventors Hall of Fame in June. TheBloomington resident retired from Toroin 2000.

Working as senior principal research

engineer at Toro’s research and develop-ment unit, Thorud was free to exploreideas and research market trends beforedeveloping full-size prototypes and testingthem in the field. But he also worked onprojects assigned by the marketingdepartment, with the goal of creatinghigh-quality products that consumerswould buy.

Thorud drew on his art training to fuelhis creativity. As a student at South HighSchool and Augsburg College inMinneapolis, he took courses in art aswell as advanced math and science, andlater earned a fine arts undergraduatedegree from the University of Minnesota.

“I had dual interests. I liked the cre-ative freedom you had in art and I alsoliked the discipline that came in mathe-matics and sciences,” said Thorud, 77.

Although Thorud didn’t have an engi-neering degree, his curiosity and enthusi-asm for learning spurred him to takeshort courses at area colleges in fields likehydraulics, plastics and internal combus-tion engines.

Art was a key to his success. He createdconcept sketches and built miniature claymodels in his office, effective tools to per-suade co-workers and bosses that his con-

cepts would work in the real world. He cre-ated a cartoon strip modeled after the“Calvin and Hobbes” comic series toexplain the then-novel concept ofmulching. “I was able to visualize thingsin my mind and see them working,” hesaid. “You have an affinity for spatial rela-tionships.”

That talent set Thorud apart fromother engineers or technicians, saidBuckley, a former Toro patent attorney.“He just had this kind of artistic flairabout inventing,” Buckley said. “Heworked at that interface between technol-ogy and the arts.”

Buckley also remembers Thorud assoft-spoken and modest. ”I can’t recall himever promoting himself,” Buckley said.“Dick was always promoting his inven-tions, which you kind of have to do whenyou’re in research and development.”

Many of Thorud’s innovations werecommercial successes, but he’s proudestof the ones that enhanced product safetyor benefitted the environment.

In 1969, Thorud developed the“Guardian” line of mowers, which incor-porated safety features designed to pre-

vent foot injuries and damage caused bydebris thrown out of the mower’s path. For the first time, rear safety shields andfoot guards were added to the machines, and led to the development of new federalsafety standards for the industry, he said.

The “Recycler” mulching system forlawn mowers was developed by 1988.Before, grass clippings were collected inbags and hauled away to landfills, creatingtons of waste. The new system chopped upthe grass clippings into smaller piecesthat could decompose and fertilize thelawn.

Since retiring, Thorud has had moretime to spend with his wife Darlene, twoadult children and five grandchildren. He’s also filling his time with creativeprojects, including a one-man show of hisphotographs scheduled for early 2012 atthe Bloomington Art Center. He’s alsowritten, illustrated and self-published 10books and is working on a 500-page bookabout creativity.

Creativity has always played an impor-tant role in Thorud’s life, whether itinvolved inventing new technology ormore artistic projects. “The creative por-tion of the work is the same, whetheryou’re writing a book or writing an articleor creating a photograph or a piece ofsculpture,” he said. “It really doesn’t mat-ter, because the creative part is always thesame.”

which are listed on the FNS website.Growth is easier with Katuin’s restau-

rant experience. At just 29-years-old, hehas already had stints opening and run-ning a Great Steak and Potato inMankato and a Pita Pit near theUniversity of Minnesota, Twin Cities, sohe knows how to relate to restaurantoperators, he said.

During off-peak hours, they may havetime to deliver food to people inMinnetonka, Hopkins, Chanhassen orother cities around Eden Prairie, but itsnot always doable if they’re busy, Katuinsaid, and they make that clear to cus-tomers in those areas.

Right now, they don’t have formalplans to expand in the Twin Cities, butKatuin said he’d like to. He just wants tomake sure they have enough resources sothings run smoothly in a new city.

“Our eventual goal is to obviously con-quer the entire Twin Cities, and youknow, make it a metro-wide thing,”Katuin said. “That will take some time, but we’ll continue to work on that.”

He’s also in the early stages of turningthe operation into a franchise, Katuinsaid.

“We like how our setup is and feel pret-

ty confident it could be in any city,” hesaid.

every day, and usually have a few driv-ers working during typical lunch anddinner times, Katuin said. For EdenPrairie, they typically tell the hungrypeople it will take somewhere between30-45 minutes, depending on the orderand individual restaurant’s prep time.

Katuin or Edwards will most likelyanswer the phone, take the order, placeit at the restaurant and they or anoth-er driver will pick it up and deliver it.

The delivery fee is $5, plus a 15 per-cent charge, which is how the contractdrivers are paid. If someone wants toplace an order from more than onerestaurant, it’s another $2.50 perrestaurant, according to the companywebsite.

Minnetonka-based UnitedHealthGroup purchased the 450,000-square-foot,former ADC complex in early June.UnitedHealth staff wouldn’t disclose thesale price, but property records have a list-ed value of $44 million.

The facility is located 13625 TechnologyDrive and is expected to serve as compa-ny’s Optum headquarters, according toUnitedHealth spokesman Brian Kane.

Optum includes three health servicebusinesses, OptumHealth, OptumInsightand OptumRx.

Optum employs 4,500 people in theTwin Cities, and some of them are expect-ed to fill the former ADC site’s 1,500 capac-ity.

In December, Tyco Electronics pur-chased ADC for $1.25 billion, and its

employees have since vacated the EdenPrairie site.

Ford DealershipWith the city council’s blessing, the

Metropolitan Ford of Eden Prairie, 12790Plaza Drive, would construct new digs ablock down the road at 12475 Plaza Drive, where the Suburban Chevrolet dealershipsits.

Tom Grossman, president of theMetropolitan Corporation, owns the Forddealership and the lease on the space willexpire soon, so he’s having a new, state-of-the art dealership built on the 12475 PlazaDrive property, which he owns.

The proposed plans have the space list-ed around 39,500 square feet, about thesame size as the current dealership,Grossman said.

“It will be a definite improvement overour current facility. There’s no questionabout that,” Grossman said.

The proposal also calls for a 1,000square-foot addition to the 62,000-square- foot Chevy dealership.

The city’s Planning Commissionapproved the plans and they will go thecouncil July 19 for approval,

Grossman said if the city councilapproves the current plans, constructioncould begin in August with the goal of fin-ishing the dealership by the end of March2012.

A residential and GE Capital project

The King of Glory Lutheran Church, located 17850 Duck Lake Trail, could makeway for new residential lots on just overhalf of the 11.6-acre property.

If the city council approves the plan, the church would be demolished and makeway for 16 single-family lots, said ScottKipp, a senior planner with the city.

The other half of the property consistsmainly of wetlands, he said. The area alsoabuts the city-owned EdenbrookConservation area.

The city council could review the plansduring the July 19 meeting.

Another addition includes a GE Capital

Eco Experience Center at the GE CapitalFleet headquarters in Eden Prairie. At thecenter, fleet service clients could learnabout and test drive a variety of new elec-tric and hybrid vehicles, which wouldinclude a road course where the vehiclescould be test driven.

Proposed plans for the two-story addi-tion include a garage for 12 cars, a 3,000square-foot meeting space, a viewing deckand an indoor and outdoor vehicle “show-case.” The addition would also includeother energy-saving technology, such assolar panels and a wind turbine.

GE Capital fleet group completed anation-wide tour at its headquarters inEden Prairie on Monday, introducing avariety of electric and hybrid vehicles toits clients.

Last year, GE Capital made a pledge tosupply 25,000 electric vehicles to its clientsand its own GE fleet by 2015, said fleet serv-ices marketing and strategy officer DebFrodl.

Franzen said he expects the city coun-cil’s consideration of the project will takeplace in August, and if approved, GE maybreak ground shortly after that meeting.

How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling?Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are youafraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safeit is? When was the last time you used it?

The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplaceand Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both yourconfidence and your chimney. Did you know that watercauses more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Yourchimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantlyexposed to the elements. They are generally constructed ofbrick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suf-fer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water.Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Citiescause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetratedexpands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interi-or and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalledand broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry andmetal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayedmortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst casescenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork.

There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensivemeasure to prevent water penetration to the flue and insidechimney elements. We sell and install locally manufacturedcaps for as little as $99.

2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals itfrom the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneysare built with an inadequate crown constructed from com-mon mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will notwithstand years of prolonged moisture exposure withoutcracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate thechimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang dripedge. This assures the water will shed helping to preventerosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces.Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from thesponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of isthe most important element to preventing deterioration. AtAirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line ofSaver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of theseproducts allows us to pass on manufacturers material war-ranties of up to 15 years to our clients.

3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts ofwater. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wickingit to the chimney interior. Products we use are specificallydeveloped for use as waterproofing agents on masonrychimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means theyallow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allowswater that has penetrated the chimney to escape while pre-venting additional water from entering from the outside.Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available shouldnever be used because they trap moisture inside actuallyaccelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable seal-er with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chim-ney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save youhundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs.Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has becomequite serious. Although these prevention measures may costyou a few dollars they can save you a lot more by prevent-ing large future masonry repairs. erans may provide an opportunity for theguests who want to hear first-hand what arenow becoming rare stories, Jasperson said.

Dick Cole will be one of them, Jaspersonsaid. He’s the 95-year-old who flew as a co-pilot in Doolittle Raid (named after pilotJames “Jimmy” Doolittle) over Japan in1942, which served as a moral victory forthe United States following the bombing ofPearl Harbor.

And, on Saturday, July 16, they will beseated among the public for the “USBank Evening with Eagles” dinnerevent at the Minneapolis MarriottSouthwest, which is expected to sell outbefore the weekend, Jasperson said.

Of course, picturing the aviators’ sto-ries may be easier after seeing some ofthe aircrafts they flew.

Of the approximately 40 aircraftexpected, a couple of highlights willinclude the Tuskegee Airmen’s plane, the P-51-C Mustang and the “YankeeLady,” a B-17 Bomber from the YankeeAir Museum in Michigan. Guests canbuy a ticket to ride in either plane dur-ing the show, said Event Director GregKaminski.

Collegiate newspaper abandons print editionBY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS

As far as funerals go, there wasn’tmuch sadness.

The Normandale Community Collegenewspaper, Lions’ Roar, published itslast edition in April. The paper, whichdates back more than four decades, waspublished once every three weeks, fea-turing many of the traditional articlesand features common to collegiate news-papers. But like major daily and commu-nity weekly newspapers around thecountry, the leadership of Lions’ Roarhas stopped the presses.

The student media, however, isn’tgoing away. Since 2004 the college’snewspaper staff has had an online pres-ence in addition to its traditional news-paper. There were several reasons why itmade sense to shift the focus to theonline content and away from the printproduct, according to faculty advisorMark Plenke.

“This is a generation of people wed-ded to their iPhones,” Plenke said.Whether it be through a mobile device

or a traditional computer, the Lions’Roar website garners more than 1,000unique visitors per month, he said.Conversely the newspaper staff is recy-cling a greater percentage of the 2,000papers printed every three weeks, heexplained.

With the shift to an online format theLions’ Roar staff will function more likea daily newspaper staff, according toPlenke.

Without collegiate sports to covereach week and little opportunity tocover breaking news for its print prod-uct, Lions’ Roar has operated more like amagazine, Plenke explained. Studentshave compensated by exploring perspec-tives about what happens on campus, but the end of the print product willbring a change in emphasis. Instead ofthe website being secondary to the printproduct, it will now be the sole focus ofstaff writers, allowing a focus similar tothat of a daily newspaper, he said.

It was a change that wasn’t possiblewithout discontinuing the print prod-uct, he noted. Providing daily content

online in addition to articles for theprint edition was more work than theLions’ Roar staff could handle. “It’stwice as much work, or more,” he said. Most agreed, “This is the right time todo this.”

Discontinuing the print edition wasnot an economic decision. Sure, studentswere picking up the newspaper with lessfrequency, but the Lions’ Roar staff hasan advantage over its commercial coun-terparts, it is the beneficiary of studentfees to fund its staffing and daily opera-tions. Advertising sold within the paperwas comparable to the cost of printingit, so the news gathering functionsshouldn’t be affected by the loss of printadvertising revenue, Plenke explained.

The challenges of overseeing a digitalnews staff will be similar, however, tothe challenges of the past several years.Plenke – a communications departmentinstructor – has been the Lions’ Roaradvisor since 2003. Unlike four-year cam-puses where newspaper staffs are com-prised largely of journalism departmentstudents, the Lions’ Roar staff is com-

prised of students who may have takencommunications classes at the college, but haven’t had the benefit of two orthree years of rigorous journalisminstruction. “These are students whohave not made up their mind about whattheir careers are going to be, for themost part,” he said.

In addition to teaching students howto construct a news article rather thanan essay, there’s an annual turnover rateof about 90 percent, sometimes as highas 75 percent between semesters, hesaid.

Some students do move on to a four-year school and pursue a journalismdegree as a result of their Normandaleexperience, Plenke noted.

The college will be introducing fivenew digital media courses next year, sothe conversion of the paper goes hand-in-hand with that, Plenke explained.

As they think about media careers,“this will be a better training ground forstudents,” Plenke said.

The Lions’ Roar website islionsroar.info.
