DG's Objective Donate Life

The first of the year’s goals for each Rotary club in our district is to recruit at least 10 new organ donors.

All Rotary Districts in Australia are participating in this project with the objective that by the end of this decade there will be no waiting list for organ donations in Australia.

About Donate Life

The Australian Government’s Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) collaborates with State and Territory Medical Directors, DonateLife Agencies (one in each state and territory) and hospital medical and nurse specialists in organ and tissue donation.

These people and organisations comprise the DonateLife Network with the objectives being to:

• increase the capability and capacity within the health system to maximise donation rates

• raise community awareness and stakeholder engagement across Australia to promote organ and tissue donation.

Find out more at http://www.donatelife.gov.au/

DGN Terry Brown, and PR Director Harold Busch have prepared an extensive set of promotional materials and arranged guest speakers. If your club is going to host a Donate Life speaker, invite the public to attend, so that they may consider becoming an organ donor. We have initiated a District Club challenge for the most donors recruited. The winner will be announced at the District Conference.

There can be no doubt about the value of this life-saving program. We have all seen how a kidney transplant saved the life of Jack Wilson, but sadly there are many Australians waiting for an organ donor.

I am amazed at the organization and logistics involved in organ transplantation, and the caring supportive assistance given to the families of organ donors. Donate Life is an exemplary clinical organization.

Outback Links 'Spirits Raising Trip' to Charleville

18-24 September 2016

Even though western Queensland has received some winter rain, the drought is far from over.

Outback Links has conducted trips to Longreach and Lightening Ridge this year, and the feedback is that the farmers really appreciate the company and concern of the “city-slickers”, so we plan to raise the spirits of farmers around Charleville.

Planning for the Outback Links trip is well advanced. Rotarians Col Lee and Bill Keenan are going to Charleville at the end of July to scope the assistance most needed. We have been able to recruit RACQ and QANTAS as corporate partners and they will be sending mechanical teams. DGN Terry Brown has agreed to be the overall coordinator of the trip.

Calling for Volunteers: We are calling for volunteers and you are invited to submit an expression of interest. All expressions of interest must be submitted by Friday 29 July on the form at THIS LINK.

When we have scoped the assistance that farmers need we will then contact you about the trip.

Tips for taking great photos

The key to getting publicity, media exposure and successful social media posts is strong photos to support your words. You don’t need an expensive SLR camera – the photos below were all taken with a phone or device. The trick to getting a good photo is in taking the time to set up your photo and subjects. Here are some tips to help you take that perfect photo. (NB: images below are low resolution to reduce this document’s file size) Don’t be afraid to move/place your subjects to create a good shot. Position your subject/s to the greatest advantage within the limitations of your setting. Choose your background carefully within the limitations of your setting. Have your subjects stand slightly turned towards the centre. No grip ‘n’ grabs No lineups with everyone facing the camera square-on. Don’t take a podium shot with the subject’s head just visible over the podium and/or the microphone up the subject’s nose. Take the time to set up your photo when the person is away from the podium.

Get your subjects to appear relaxed – even having fun. Get your subjects to stand close so that there’s no space visible between each person

Page 13: D9640 Matters - Microsoft · July 2016 Even though western Queensland has had some winter rain, the drought is far from over. Our District is conducting a 'Spirits Raising Trip' to

Use colour to add life to your photo – red and yellow are best so put this towards the centre. Even the dullest photo will be boosted by colour. Move in close to your subject/s, with your subject/s filling the entire frame Make sure all subjects are looking at the camera.

Introduce action into your photo. Get your subjects doing something – while looking at the camera

Group shots can be tricky to set up. The key is to get subjects standing close together rather than in a straight line. Seating some subjects is a useful trick. Place colour in strategic positions within the shot.

Think outside the square when constructing your photos. This one was used in campaign to collect bras to send to third world countries. While the ladder may seem out of place, it creates an informal impression.

GENERAL INFORMATION Privacy: You must tell your subjects that the photos may be used for publicity purposes – especially non-Club members such as guest speakers, and that these may be used in publicity material, online, in your newsletter, on social media or sent to the media. Children: Don’t including children in your photos unless you have written permission from the child’s parents. Captions: Always provide the media with informative captions and the full names of the subjects – listed from the left.
