Dear Friends of Da Camera,
Great music is often made by artists delving into their personal histories, taking the raw material of what
makes them tick and turning it into a public act. The magic is in the transformation. With the 2016-2017
season, Da Camera joins artists on this inward journey, focusing on musical works that vividly illuminate
the “musical DNA” of composers and performers. ROOTS examines the sources from which creative artists
develop a style that is uniquely their own. Experiences of childhood, ethnic identity and historic influences
all come into play in the act of creation. Who am I? The answer is in the music.
A new string quartet by John Adams takes inspiration from the late Beethoven quartets he heard performed
in his youth. Jason Moran celebrates Thelonious Monk, whose music prompted him to turn from classical
piano to jazz. The Brentano Quartet takes Bach’s seminal Art of the Fugue and uses architectural design,
dance and texts to make the form visible. The art of Picasso finds parallel expressions in music as the
20TH century unfolds. Vijay Iyer turns to his Indian heritage for his filmic celebration of the Holi festival,
Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi, which also celebrates Stravinsky’s iconic masterpiece, The Rite of Spring.
I hope you will join us for this musical exploration of Roots.

legendary singer Josephine Baker. Julia Bullock has been hailed
as an “impressive, fast-rising soprano…poised for a significant
career” by The New York Times. She has captivated audiences with
her versatile artistry and commanding stage presence. Bullock makes

Jason Moran In My Mind: Monk At Town Hall, 1959Friday, October 7, 2016, 8:00 PMCullen Theater, Wortham Center
After creating the stunning Holed Up for his Da Camera residency in 2014,
Jason Moran returns to his roots in one of his first explorations into expanding
the possibilities for the jazz concert.
As a child in Houston studying classical piano, Jason Moran heard a recording
of Thelonious Monk in his parent's living room and it changed his life. “Monk
was really my first great influence on the piano,” says the pianist and composer.
Moran's critically acclaimed multimedia tribute to Monk focuses on the seminal
recording of the jazz iconoclast’s 1959 performance at Town Hall. Rather than
“replay” the event, Moran delves into Monk's life and work in order to create a
highly personal and innovative tribute to the pianist whom Moran now considers
part of his “musical DNA.”
“By the closing number Crepuscule With Nellie, the music was triumphantly cherishing Monk by unveiling a world he had made possible.”– The Guardian, London
“stunning project–connecting with Monk beyond the surface of his music.” – The New York Times

John Adams String Quartet No. 2 (Houston premiere)
Beethoven Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131
St. Lawrence String Quartet (Geoff Nuttall, violin; Owen Dalby, violin; Lesley Robertson, viola; Christopher Costanza, cello)
The outstanding St. Lawrence String Quartet returns with a Houston premiere and masterpieces by
Haydn and Beethoven. The new quartet by American master John Adams explores his musical roots in
the classical repertoire and the life-changing experience he had as a teenager of attending performances
by the Budapest and Juilliard Quartets. Reflecting deeply on his formative years, especially on the power
of Beethoven's late works, Adams bases this new work on what he calls “fractals,” or small fragments,
from Beethoven's last piano sonatas.
The Houston premiere of John Adams new quartet anticipates Houston Grand Opera's
30-year anniversary production of Nixon in China.
“Impassioned performances full of operatic lyricism and structural insight.” – The New Yorker
“These are fearless musicians whose spontaneity stretches past conventional interpretation and probes the music's imaginative limits.” – The Washington Post

On the occasion of the Menil Collection's drawing exhibition, Picasso: The Line, pianist and Da Camera artistic director Sarah Rothenberg presents a program inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso. Picasso's genius is notable for its virtuosic diversity of styles and his work in multiple artistic media. His creativity extended also to theater and dance in collaborations with such composers as Igor Stravinsky, Manuel De Falla and Erik Satie. These landmark ballets produced by Diaghilev's legendary Ballet russes, with sets and costumes by Picasso, become the springboard for Sarah Rothenberg's exploration of parallel paths in music and art at the beginning of the 20th century.
Pianist Sarah Rothenberg's many activities as performer, writer and public speaker illuminate connections between visual art and music. She has appeared at The Guggenheim; The Jewish Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Menil on subjects ranging from Impressionist drawing to Mark Rothko. Da Camera's recording, Rothko Chapel: Feldman, Satie and Cage, has received international acclaim and was named one of the top ten classical CD's of 2015 by the Chicago Tribune.

Fauré Trio in D Minor, Op. 120Joan Tower For DanielSchubert Trio No. 1 in B-flat Major, D. 898
Horszowski Trio (Jesse Mills, violin; Raman Ramakrishnan, cello; Rieko Aizawa, piano)
Two-time Grammy-nominated violinist Jesse Mills joins with the founding cellist of the prize-
winning Daedalus Quartet and acclaimed pianist Rieko Aizawa in this celebrated ensemble.
Named for legendary pianist and Curtis Institute of Music teacher Mieczysław Horszowski, the
Trio takes inspiration from Horszowski’s musicianship, integrity and humanity.
In their Houston debut, they perform Fauré’s gracefully lyrical Trio, American composer Joan
Tower’s elegiac For Daniel, and the radiant Schubert work which inspired Brahms to write, “One
glance at Schubert’s Trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is
fresh and bright again.”
“Destined for great things.” – The New Yorker on the Horszowski Trio
“Played as if he’d just received [the music] from some distant, vast and magnificent reach of the cosmos.”– The Washington Post on Jesse Mills
“Understatedly elegant and smooth tone.” – The Boston Globe on Raman Ramakrishnan
“A pianist of extraordinary refinement and vitality.” – Cleveland Plain Dealer on Rieko Aizawa

today. The son pays homage to the father in Still Dreaming — a program of new compositions
inspired by his father’s band, Old and New Dreams, which featured an unforgettable lineup of
Ornette Coleman alumni: Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell. For

Terence Blanchard Featuring The E-Collective Saturday, April 22, 2017, 8:00 PM
Cullen Theater, Wortham Theater Center
Since top-tier jazz and multiple Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard
embarked on his solo recording career, the New Orleans-born and -based artist has traveled
many paths musically, including delivering adventurous and provocative acoustic jazz outings
of original material and composing over 50 soundtracks. Now, Blanchard powerfully and playfully
journeys into a new jazz realm with his quintet, The E-Collective — an exciting zone of grooved
fusion teeming with funk, R&B and blues colors. It’s a first foray into straight-up groove for
Blanchard; come enjoy the dance-steeped party he and his quintet – guitarist Charles Altura,
Fabian Almazan on piano and synthesizers, bassist Donald Ramsey, and drummer
Oscar Seaton – have cooked up.
“A trumpeter of expressive urgency and a composer of expansive vision.” – The New York Times
“Terence Blanchard has always been forward thinking, but with E-Collective he shoots straight into tomorrow…but it’s still the tough but tender, timeless but vital unique tone that marks Terence’shorn as one of the truly great and classic jazzmen.”– DownBeat
Llyr Williams, piano Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 7:30 PM
The Menil Collection
Schumann Papillons, Op. 2 Humoreske in B flat Major, Op. 20Chopin Fantaisie in F Minor, Op. 49Rachmaninoff Selection of Preludes from Op. 23 and Op. 32
Welsh pianist Llyr Williams is a regular performer at London’s Wigmore Hall and recently made
his debuts at The Gilmore International Keyboard Festival and the Ravinia Festival. On the
cusp of a major international career, he has received rapturous acclaim from critics for his
performances and recordings. In his Houston recital debut, Williams plays beloved masterworks
of the Romantic repertoire by Schumann, Chopin and Rachmaninoff.
“Williams has that precious ability to shed new light on the most familiar music, and a nonchalant technical mastery and singing tone that transform the simplest of melodies into something exceptional.” – The Guardian
“Profound musical intelligence, warm humanity and formidable technique.” – Seen and Heard International
