Gerardo “Ghost” Cazares was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. He served in the US army for eight years during which he served two tours as a combat engineer. After the end of his service, he learned to paint to help cope with the stress of reinte-gration into the civilian life-style and has been expressing himself through art for quite some time now. Ghost draws inspiration from religious imagery, heavy metal and his military service. He currently works as a heavy equipment mechanic and aspires to be a full-time artist.
You can view his work at Beyond Service: An Exhibi-tion of Artworks by Veterans at Bihl Haus Arts on Freder-icksburg Road. The artworks in this exhibition, organized by Wounded Warrior and participating artist Mario Lopez, have been created by Veterans who have served in various branches of the military during the Vietnam War and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
These Veteran artists have been recognized with valor and meritorious awards in-cluding the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and numerous service ribbons. Featured
artists include Guy Banta, MD, Gerardo ‘Ghost’ Casa-res, Brandi Hartigan, Kath-erine Hopkins, Paul Kahl Jr., George Lamson, Natalie Lopez, Roger Price, Lionel Sosa, Cody Vance, Roy Vil-larreal & Michael Wright.
The exhibition also introduces se-lected works cre-ated by Veterans enrolled in the new Bihl Haus Forward, A r t s ! p r o g r a m taught by Russell Stephenson.

El sábado 16 de noviem-bre de 10 am a 6 pm, Alamo Music Center celebrará 90 años de difusión de alegría, diversión y comunidad a través de instrumentos mu-sicales en San Antonio, Texas y ¡a traves del globo!. A lo largo del día, el person-al, los invitados y el equipo de Alamo Music Center se exhibirán en ambas tiendas con una variedad de instru-mentos que se presentarán con diferentes tipos de es-tilos musicales.
Alamo Music, fundada en 1929 por Alfredo Flores Sr., un inmigrante de Muzquiz, Coahuila México, ayuda a las personas a encontrar su instrumento musical adec-uado, ya sea piano, guitarra, batería, saxofón, violín o kazoo. Flores Sr. creía en el poder de la música para cambiar vidas y su legado sigue vivo hoy.
Alfredo Flores Jr. se hizo cargo de la tienda a media-dos de la década de 1960 y se convirtió en el primer y único presidente latino de la NAMM (Asociación Nacional de Comerciantes
de Música) en 1984. El Sr. Flores Jr. continuó el le-gado de su padre y trabajó estrechamente con distritos escolares, universidades y educadores de música lo-cales privados en su carrera de más de 50 años de traer los mejores instrumentos musicales a San Antonio.

Ernest Z. Robles With initial funding from IBM, Ernest Z. Robles found-ed the national Hispanic scholarship fund (NHSF) in 1975 with help from Arch-bishop Patrick Flores and Paul Sedillo. In the first year, Robles offered $30,000 in scholarships to 115 students. Today, the NHSF has award-ed over $25 million to 26,327 student and is supported by corporate sponsors, including General Electric, Anheuser-Busch and Eastman Kodak. Under the leadership of Ro-bles, thousands of Hispanic students have embarked on productive career paths. With statistics showing Hispanics still under-represented in universities, Robles is deter-mined to continue to provide scholarships to outstanding Hispanic students who repre-
sent our future leaders.

chez, conocido en el ambi-ente social y deportivo por el apodo de “Caviche”, durante concurrida fiesta celebró su 60º cumpleaños, en la grata compañía de su gentil esposa Olga Isabel Sánchez, sus hijas Rosa Elia Cabal-lero, Lluvia Zamarrón y su heredero José Luis Sánchez Jr. Su hermana María Luisa Sánchez, quien hizo viaje exprofeso desde la ciudad de Monterrey, Nuevo León, y de su hermano Juan Andrés Cuevas, residente en San Antonio.
El evento especial fue or-ganizado en Potranco Ro-deo Ballroom, donde con anticipación su familia hizo la invitación mediante alu-siva “etiqueta” con el slogan (referente a marca tequilera). “Añejado 60 Años Cosecha
Edic ión Limitada (Añejado a la Perfección)”.
Caviche Sánchez, quien además es gran seguidor del club Chivas de Guadalajara, agradeció el respaldo que le dieron directivos y se-guidores del Club Rieleros, organización que goza de prestigio a nivel regional en el béisbol independiente en las categorías Veteranos y Libre.
“Aparte de mi familia, tuve el honor de recibir apoyo de mis amigos beisbolistas y sus familiares. Así como de amistades quienes me hicieron más feliz este in-olvidable festejo (Mis 60 años). Gracias a Dios que me ha dado la oportunidad de llegar a esta bonita edad y no queda más que seguir adelante, apoyando a los Ri-eleros, eventos y torneos de
tradición en San Antonio”, dijo Caviche.
Sus invitados disfrutaron deliciosa cena, y menudo que fue preparado por los esposos Reza. El ambiente musical estuvo a cargo del DJ Pablo, Mariachi Show Monterrey, y Grupo Los Únicos, que le cantaron las tradicionales “Mañanitas”, y complacieron a los ahí reunidos interpretando sus temas favoritos. El mariachi, visitó cada una de las mesas y Los Únicos, con su repertorio musical hizo que las parejas disfrutaran bailando temas románticos, cumbias, cor-ridos y baladas.
El feliz cumpleañero, re-cibió felicitaciones en espe-cial de sus amigos Frankie Vokalz, y Albert Núñez, quien estuvo acompañada por su estimada familia.

Congratulations to the Somerset Fighting Bulldogs Cheer competition squad who participated in the 25th Texas Youth Cheer & Dance Competition –TYFA- (State Competition Texas Youth Football & Cheer Association).
The spectacular tourney was held on Saturday, No-vember 2, at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The girls placed first place in Novice Red Mix & State Champi-ons as well as Grand Cham-pions and Best Facial.
The team performed flaw-lessly out of 6 other teams in the regional area with almost perfect scores. These girls rocked that the blue
mat and we couldn’t be any prouder.

every American war dat-ing back to the American Revolution in 1776. They also fought on both sides of the Texas War for In-dependence in 1836, the Mexican-U.S War in 1846, and the American Civil War in 1860. Like other American veterans, Lati-nos returned from war to tend to their injuries, restart careers, or begin new lives with the skills they learned in military service.
During World War II, the U.S. Congress passed legislation to reward those who had fought to defend American democracy and freedom. With G.I.Bill ben-efits veterans could count on medical care, burial rights, housing assistance, and free college tuition.
Segregation and discrimi-nation, however, prevented African Americans and Latinos from taking full advantage of the war ben-efits. In South Texas, Dr. Hector P. Garcia emerged
in the late 1940s as the first champion of Latino veter-ans. The founding of the American G.I. Forum by Dr. Garcia and his related achievements are the topic of this essay. The American G.I. Forum became one of the early influential Mexi-can American civil rights organizations.
Dr. Hector P. Garcia had completed his medical resi-dency in 1942 when he joined the Army. With de-grees from the University of Texas Medical School
at Galveston and residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, he was well trained in the field of medicine.
Despite his excellent cre-dentials, his first assignment was command of an infan-try followed by command of a company of combat engineers. Finally the Army got it right and transferred him to the medical corps in his last two years of service. He served with distinction earning the Bronze Star Medal and the World War II
Victory Medal. Dr. Garcia grew up in Mercedes, Texas but upon his discharge from military service, he opened a medical practice with his brother in Corpus Christi, Texas. G.I. Forum in 1948. The American G.I. Forum
was in its inaugural year when Dr. Garcia learned of the fate of Pvt. Felix Longoria who grew up in the small town of Three
Rivers, Texas. Longoria had been killed by a Japanese sniper in the waning years of the war in the Philipine Islands. In late 1948 Longo-ria’s widow received notice that his body was in transit
to his Texas home. His widow’s request to use the Three Rivers, Texas funeral chapel was denied by the director on the basis that “whites won’t like it.”

reached out to Dr. Garcia who informed the new-ly elected U.S. Senator, Lyndon B. Johnson, of the blatant discriminatory treat-ment of an American ser-viceman. Senator Johnson secured permission to bury Pvt. Longoria at Arlington National Cemetery where he became the first Latino to receive this distinguished burial honor.
Over the next decade, the American G.I. Forum fought for the desegrega-tion of schools, helped to win a jury discrimination case in the U.S. Supreme
Court, gained better wages for farmworkers, and won the elimination of the poll tax for voters.
Dr. Garcia is also credited with the founding of Viva Kennedy clubs across the nation in the 1960 presi-dential
campaign. He became the first Mexican American to be appointed as a U.N. Am-bassador and also served on the United States Com-mission on Civil Rights. In 1984 Dr. Garcia was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Who’s More at Risk for a Scam?

Approximately one in 10 U.S. adults are victims of fraud every year and South Texas is no stranger to victims of scams. In 2018, the Federal Trade Commis-sion (FTC) received over 372,000 fraud complaints. With fraud being such a common issue, it becomes easy to wonder, “What separates victims from non-victims?” There isn’t a superior kind of person that is immune to scams, and even those who consider themselves savvy can find themselves a victim if they aren’t careful and informed.
Better Business Bureau partnered with FINRA’s Investor Education Foun-dation to survey more than 1,000 American and Cana-dian consumers who had previously been targeted by scammers. Their answers, highlighted in a reported
released in early October, gave more insight into what leads to a consumer being defrauded. For example, of those surveyed, nearly a quarter engaged with the scammer who was targeting them. And of the consumers who engaged, the average amount of money lost was $600.
The key findings of the study shine light not only on ways individuals may be more vulnerable, but the precautions they can take to protect themselves as well:
Social media. Consum-ers were far more likely to engage with scammers if they were reached via social media, rather than phone or email. It showed that 91% of the consumers reached through social media en-gaged, and 53% ended up losing money.
Social isolation. People who didn’t have people in their lives to discuss fraudulent offers with were far more likely to become victims. Scam victims were more likely to be unmar-
ried, widowed or divorced. They also reported much higher feelings of loneli-ness.
Financial literacy. Vic-timization was more likely to occur to someone who was under financial strain, young adults or someone with low financial literacy.
Last line of defense. The study found that 51% of people reported a third par-ty (such as a cashier, bank teller or employees of wire transfer services) interven-ing helped them avoid los-ing money.
Scam knowledge. Almost half of people surveyed said the news was their biggest source of information about scams, and word of mouth was second most common. People with more knowl-edge and understanding of scams are more likely to avoid them.

PROPOSED PERMIT NUMBER: 155691
APPLICATION AND PRELIMINARY DECISION. Ameresco, Inc., 101 Constitution Avenue Northwest Suite 525, Washington, District of Columbia 20001-2133, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for issuance of Proposed Air Quality Permit Number 155691, which would authorize installation of two natural-gas-powered engine-generators located in Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland approximately 1,000 feet southeast of the intersection of Springvale Drive and Valley Hi Drive, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas 78236. Bajó la dirección del timonel en jefe Gregg Popovich, Spurs con nuevo talento se perfila para ser el equipo sorpresa en la confer-encia del oeste.Popovich, ha indicado que no se tiene prisa para que la quinteta estelar y suplentes se impongan en cada uno de sus encuentros tanto de local (AT&T Center), como de gira. La base de seguidores de San Antonio, en buenos números sigue respaldando cada partido. Recientemente ante el visitante Lakers de Los Ángeles, con su estelar delantero LeBron James y Danny Green, ex guardia de Spurs, el estadio AT&T Center registro la entrada de 18,610 espectadores (Sellout). Sanchez, current Pres-ident and CEO of the SAHCC, the City hosted the US-Spain Annual Forum on November 1 and 2 at the Pearl Stables. The US-Spain Forum gathers over 200 private, public and non governmental leaders to discuss issues of the day relevant to the US, Spain and Europe.
Congressman Joaquin Cas-tro, as the Honorary Chairman of the forum, organized the gathering with strong support and funding from Bexar Coun-ty , the City of San Antonio and corporate sponsors. From a San
Antonio perspective, the goal has been to connect connect Spanish companies with a pres-ence in Texas and those looking to expand to consider San An-tonio as a place to do business. “In 2017, Spain had Foreign Direct Investments of over $73.2B in the United States and has over 57 U.S. Affiliates of Spanish owned corporations operating in Texas,” said Diane S. to recover, index and pub-lish lost Latino writings dating from the American colonial period to 1960.
These subs tan t ive discussions took place with the backdrop of the majestic San Jose Mis-sion and the Dia De Los Muertos festivities at the
Emma Hotel and the Pearl. In fact, San Antonio’s First Lady Erika Prosper’s presentation on the origins and cultural roots of the Dia De Los Muertos was a highlight. The closing night dinner was hosted at the Witte Museum. This 2019 forum was a magnificent display of San Antonio as a unique, bi cultural city, rooted in its Mexican and Spanish history, yet already a part of a rapidly changing, competitive , growing global economy.

Welcome to issue #4 of the “Ain’t done yet” series. Hav-ing previously given the reader some information about how it works here at Madison Estates on Fredericksburg Road, we continue our journey.
Let’s expand on other activi-ties that make Madison Estates independent retirement living, a reality for those of us who have reached the cutoff age of 55 with no cutoff at the high end. Considering we have one precious senior who we look forward to celebrating her 102 birthday in February! She is clear headed, articulate, totally aware of her surroundings, and just a really pleasant person to be around. We also have three 99-year old ladies who are close to being inducted into the Hundred Club. If I can make it, I will turn 100 September 5th, 2046! What are the odds?
This past week I was tasked to take head shots of our cadre of Madison Heights Ambas-sadors who have the mission to help all residents feel at home, and welcome. They are to assist the new residents in understanding the schedule and activities and answer questions they may have. They promote
a positive and helpful attitude to make living pleasant for all. My wife Linda is an Ambas-sador and she loves it.
I have said in a previous column, every day is a new ad-venture and I feel rejuvenated. Yesterday with all that is going on here at Madison Estates we hosted a male fashion show in the building with male resi-dents walking a makeshift run-way including me. We did it to support men’s health. Besides taking photos of the event, I walked the runway as well!
Our recent celebration of ghosts and goblins was also awesome. Residents decorated their doors, the hallways and dressed up in costumes yell-ing, “trick or treat.” Can you say “scary”? Face painting was a big hit for Diaz De Los Muertos.
As I shared already, every month a schedule is printed and distributed to the residents of upcoming events. This past week we witnessed a perfor-mance by the “Jolly Jubilee Jammers.” They caught the attention of the excited crowd, as they serenaded us with song, especially the tribute to our military and country. music was also exciting. Today we celebrated Vet-
eran’s Weekend Popcorn & Trivia in our Fireplace Lounge on the third floor. With so many veterans living here, no matter what table you sit in the dining hall, there will be at least one veteran sitting next to you. That is when the conversation turns to military war stories.
In the Fire Place Lounge wall, photos of veterans from 2nd World War, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Desert Storm adorn the wall. I served in Viet Nam, Germany, and Desert Storm. My photo of serving in Desert Storm at the Pentagon is going up soon.
As more people of age con-tinue to move in Madison Estates, I will encourage them share their stories of days gone by with all of us. You never know what experience they may have to tell, good or bad. With the wealth of retired teachers like me, male and fe-male veterans of all services, like me, doctors, nurses and many business people we are truly blessed.
By the way, don’t forget, moving to Madison Estates is a positive decision because we “ain’t done yet!”
