AltroScreed QuartzTM resin flooring has been used in many areas in the new state-of-the-artLlanwern High School, in Newport, South Wales.

HLM designed the new structure, and its aim was to create a robust, hard-wearingenvironment which was also fun and colourful. The school is an H-shaped construction, witha north and south wing wrapped around a central glass-roofed atrium. Each of the wingshas its own colour scheme; the north uses warm colours such as reds and purples and thesouth cooler greens and blues.

Janine Gemmell, interior designer at HLM, commented: “The AltroScreed Quartz flooringfor the school was chosen after a great deal of research by the client, and they visited a lotof schools before deciding what they wanted. They looked at lino and tiles, but finally theychose resin because it is seamless, hard wearing and a great looking alternative. “We selected a soft, neutral grey AltroScreed Quartz for the circulation areas and then forother areas we chose shades to match their colour schemes. This product has a superb rangeof decorative coloured quartz which can be incorporated for a lovely looking finish.”

AltroScreed Quartz is a three-part, solvent-free system in which blended decorative quartzaggregate is bound with clear epoxy resin and finished with clear seal coats. The productprovides a high-strength, chemically resistant decorative floor surface that can be coved andlaid to drainage falls. It is available in 4mm or 6mm thickness.

Howe GreenHowe Green’s 5000 and 7500 Series aluminium access covers have been installed inboth the North and South Terminal buildings of the first urban cable car in the UK.

Terrazzo flooring contractor TRI, chose Howe Green’s aluminium covers to provide easy, reliable and durable access to essential under-floor services for The Emirates Air Line;Transport for London’s gondola link across the River Thames from the GreenwichPeninsula to the Royal Docks.

Howe Green’s 5000 and 7500 Series aluminium panels are tamper resistant and double-sealed for safety and hygiene and sit flush with the floor to prevent slips and trips. They are also exceptionally hardy, making them ideal for the high levels of trafficexpected to use the link, which connects two important Olympic sites.

Howe Green also designed and fabricated a bespoke decorative trim for the project. Analuminium bar with special anchors was made featuring a semi-circular section with a10-metre radius and a 6mm visible edge. The company’s technical team worked closelywith client TRI and added anchors on one side only to accommodate a 20mm StrataGranazzo floor tile - making tiling up to it much quicker and easier on site.

“We’ve worked with Howe Green for over 20 years” commented Simon Petrou, TRI’sCommercial Director “That says an awful lot about the company and the excellentstandard of manufacture, service and support we get from them.” Web: www.howegreen.com

Lanes’ sewer repairchallenge is a winnerA challenging section of sewer almost

jeopardised Severn Trent Water’smulti-million pound sewer renewal

scheme in Nottingham, until the LanesGroup came up with a clever — and

award-winning — solution.

The project in Upper Parliament Street, which involved relining just 6-metres ofsewer with a contract value of just£14,500, was voted overall winner inthe UKSTT’s 2012 award in the ‘SmallScheme’ category. No one had been prepared to tackle thecrucial repair. The sewer was badlydilapidated with missing and loosebricks, including at the crown, but thereal challenge was the changing shapeand size of the sewer — 375mmdiameter round at one end and600>650mm egg-shaped at the other.Ged Healy, project manager at Lanes,

takes up the story: “We had just wonour first contract for STW’s maincontractor, NMCNomenca, to work ona scheme elsewhere when this trickyproblem came up so they asked us tohave a look — a ‘baptism of fire’, I think!“We were confident that we could finda solution because we have relinedplenty of unconventional pipes before,so we put our heads together and cameup with a plan. Like all the best ideas, itturned out to be simple, yet effective.”A 600mm section of 450mm diameter, twin wall, plastic pipe was fitted flushup to the brick face of the existing375mm pipe and secured in place witha 375>450 tapered patch wrappedaround the packer and then inflated tothe 450mm diameter pipe. This createda structurally sealed extension to the375mm pipe that overlapped 100mminto the patched section of the brick eggsewer.Due to the thickness of the twin wallplastic pipe, this now left a 50mm voidbetween the twin wall and newly-linedbrick egg. Injecting this with expandingfoam filled the void, supported theextended pipe and pushed against thebrickwork, securing loose bricks andproviding structural integrity. Excessfoam was cut back and the face of itsealed with render. (see photo).LANES FOR DRAINS

Almost 26 km2 of expanded aluminium fromRMIG has been used to create a unique exteriorto Poland’s National Stadium in Warsaw, whichis not only home to the Polish football team, butalso staged the opening ceremony of the UEFAEuro 2012 competition, hosted jointly withUkraine. The new UEFA category 4 stadium has a maximumseating capacity of more than 72,000, when usedfor concerts and entertainment events and wasdesigned by the international architecturalconsortium of JSK Architekci and Gerkan, Marg andPartners in collaboration with Schlaich Bergermann& Partner GmbH.The expanded aluminium façade sits above thestadium’s lower level glazed section and is paintedin a red and white colour scheme, which representsPoland’s national colours and the waving of thecountry’s flag, as the exterior panels are installedat subtle angles with each layer alternating withthe adjacent levels above and below. As the stadium is designed as an open structure to

provide natural ventilation to spectators andcompetitors, even when the venue’s innovativefolding roof is closed, the exterior cladding fromRMIG not only enables air to flow through thestructure, but also provides a semi-transparent anddurable external skin that allows internal lightingto show through.More than 9,000 individual anodised aluminiumpanels were manufactured by RMIG to extremelytight tolerances. This was an advantage inconnection with the on-site installation andenabled the complete external mesh to be readilysecured to the internal aluminium supportstructure to provide an integrated corrosion-resistant facade. Each aluminium panel measures 2310mm x1240mm and incorporate a 70mm x 200mm meshwith a 20mm wide bridge. While most are 4mmthick, 784 were produced from slightly thicker5mm material for specific parts of the façadewhere additional strength was required.RMIG’s Project Manager, Anna Siwek, explained:

“The use of expanded aluminium mesh in thisapplication not only creates a highly decorative andversatile solution to the stadium’s exteriorappearance, but also provides a practical benefit inthe venue’s natural ventilation strategy, to helpkeep spectators cool and comfortable.”She added: “While we are regularly involved in highprofile exterior and interior projects, it’s not oftenthat the structures we work on are on view to aworldwide television audience as well as beingfeatured in international media quite so often, sowe’re extremely proud to have been involved in thisproject.”

RMIG has 14 offices in 12 countries andprovides precision engineered perforatedsolutions across the globe to meet the needs ofa range of business sectors and industry groups.Further information on the RMIG Group, itsproduct groups, markets served and themanufacturing solutions it provides can beobtained by visiting www.rmig.com.

In a fire, the twoglazing seals and liner expand, preventing the glass from slumping; andalso stopping heat transferring to thetimber, so fire cannot take hold aroundthe edges of the glazing aperture. Listers and Rototeaching olddogs new tricksOnce bitten, twice shy. A leopard neverchanges its spots. A rolling stonegathers no moss. Plenty of proverbshold some truth but there are a fewthat can be challenged. In the case ofLister Trade Frames that proverb was,“you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Lister Trade Frames had beeninvestigating a roof window supplierthat ticked all the boxes for theirinstallers. They felt that that there wasan opportunity to look at new and

Holiday HOTSPOT Hotelrestored to its former gloryOwners at The Cliffe Norton Hotel in Tenby, South Wales called uponsash window renovation experts Ventrolla to renovate the windows of

their impressive early 19th century Grade II listed building.

The strong Welsh winds lashing thePembrokeshire coast had taken their toll onthe windows and they were in dire need ofrestoration.Mr and Mrs Hayward, who run the hotel, had noticed draught and noise problemsrelating to the windows and were worriedabout the impact this was having onholidaymakers staying with them.Firstly, the windows were repaired byreplacing parts of rotten wood from thetimber frames before the unique VentrollaPerimeter Sealing System (VPSS) wasinstalled to eliminate the draughts andrattles. After slotting the sashes back in place, thewindows were left in perfect working order, giving the building a new lease of life.Mr Hayward is delighted the windows arenow draught proofed, reducing noise from

the wind as well as making the hotelwarmer and more comfortable.Mr Hayward said: “Following therenovations, the windows exclude draughtsvery well and I have really felt the benefitof the work carried out. We can now offerwarm, bright and cheerful rooms, spectacular views and a quieter, lessdraughty stay.”Situated just off the Tenby coast, the hoteloffers panoramic views across the FishingHarbour and Goskar Rock, North Beach. New technology, developed at aShropshire-based company, is leadingto a dramatic rise in the number ofhouseholders turning to wood burningstoves as a practical way of cuttingfuel bills whilst finding anenvironmentally-friendly way to heattheir homes. Dennis Kerr, a leadinginstaller of ‘green’ heating systemsexplains how Broseley’s Safety ColdWater System (SCWS) is revolutionisingthe industry.

Until quite recently it was extremely difficult toconnect a wood burning stove to an existingsealedheating system as there were a number ofpractical problems that had to be overcome, particularly in newer properties. Most homes built in the past 30 years or so rely on asealed central heating system. So the connection ofa wood burning stove boiler that requires theinstallation of an open vented system includingmetalfeed and expansion tank, open vent, cold feed and agravity fed heat leak radiatorcan cause extra work andadaptation of an existing sealed heating system if thewood burner is being retrofitted. This is particularly difficult when working in a modernproperty where space is at a premium. What’s more, such a system is difficult to design with lots of extrapipework. Typically, such a system would take aplumber or specialist installer around two days to fit,

on top of the time needed to install the stove itself. As a result, it is not surprising that we would onlycarry out around three or four such installations a year, and then normally in older properties with existingopen vented systems already fitted. That’s all changed with the introduction of Broseley’sSCWS, which enables many of the firm’s boiler stovesto be fitted directly to a sealed system, often withinjust two hours rather than two days!We are now carrying out at least one installation aweek as more people realise the benefits of woodburners and, thanks to the SCWS, they are becomingmuch easier to install in newer properties. In factwood burning stoves are no longer seen as a ruralheating solution but are becoming an increasinglycommon sight in built-up areas and moderndevelopments. The self-build market has seen the fastest growth, especially as environmental issues dominate theheadlines and more people aspire to an eco-friendlylifestyle.The most popular solution is a bi-valent system, whichenables a wood burner to work alongside anotherheat source, such as a conventional gas or oil boiler. This offers the householder the option to use theboiler to provide hot water when they do not havetime to light a fire, or when the weather is warm anda fire would be overpowering. This approach is even more efficient with theintroduction of a thermal store that retains the heatof the fire long after it has gone out to provide hotwater when it is needed. The 30kW Vaillant ground source heatpump system draws energy from theground using eleven 70 metreboreholes, drilled by ENER-G.

By exploiting the relatively stabletemperatures found under the earth’ssurface, the ground source heat pumpis able to deliver heating and cooling atvery high efficiencies. The £3.5 million redevelopment ofVaillant Group UK and Northern EuropeRegion Headquarters, located alongsidethe company's award winningmanufacturing plant, opened inDecember 2011.As a renowned champion of energyefficient heating products, VaillantGroup created a cost neutral and lowcarbon building, incorporating VaillantGroup’s portfolio of renewable energyproducts, including a ground sourceheat pump, air-to-water heat pumps,air-to-air heat pumps, mechanicalventilation and heat recovery, solarthermal and photovoltaic systems. The building is believed to be unique inEurope in incorporating so manydifferent sources of renewable energyto actually power the heating and hotwater in the building. A particularlyinnovative feature of the building is thatheat from the Ground Source Heatpump and other sources from thebuilding is distributed throughout thebuilding through the mechanicalventilation and heat recovery. Inaddition, there are no light switches asall areas are controlled by motionsensors

Polypipe Ventilation's independently accreditedtraining programme for Domestic VentilationInstallers has been recognised by Competent

Person Schemes, who are eager to providedomestic ventilation installation services underthe latest revision of the Building Regulations.

Due to widespread poor installationpractice found in Mechanical Ventilationwith Heat Recovery (MVHR) andMechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV)systems, which affect system efficiency- most notably the Specific Fan Power(SFP) - heavy penalties are applied toSAP calculations, the official methodused to calculate the energyconsumption in dwellings.Recently however, the Department ofEnergy & Climate Change (DECC) statedthat it will reduce these penalties if the

systems are installed by a member of aregistered Competent Person Scheme. In order to realise these new SAPCalculation benefits, a trained contractorregistered under a Competent PersonScheme must be used to install MVHRand MEV systems. The installation mustmeet the performance laid out in theoriginal system design and an inspectionchecklist must be completed andsubmitted to building control. A checkbox in the SAP 2009 programme needsto be completed to enable improvementto the overall energy rating. In 2010, Polypipe Ventilation producedan in-depth Ventilation Installer trainingprogramme to meet the newrequirements of Building RegulationsPart F, Ventilation, which for the firsttime required a 'qualified' installer tocommission new ventilation systems andsubmit a commissioning report to theBuilding Control Body (BCB). This twoday training course was adopted byBPEC, one of the UK's leading trainingproviders, and is now widely recognisedby the domestic ventilation industry. This same training scheme has also nowbeen recognised by the Government asa suitable academic qualification forrelevant Competent Person Schemes.POLYPIPE

Working closely with Roderick James Architects, thefinal designs feature a contemporary timber framestructure, which maximises internal space and light,to create an open flexible home that is hoped willachieve an ‘A’ rating in the SAP Energy PerformanceCertificate. The home will be available as a show home forCarpenter Oak and Roderick James Architects

together with their suppliers for at least two yearsand is open to members of the public andinterested parties, by appointment. The high levels of insulation used, allow for low U-Values. This allowed Total Home Environment’sGenvex Premium 2 to be specified to provide heatrecovery ventilation, together with comfort coolingand primary heating from the integrated micro air-source heat pump. The Vanvex 285 unit also fromTotal Home Environment, was specified to take careof all the domestic hot water requirements. With itsincreased efficiency, the Genvex ventilation systemsform the fundamental part of a low-energy heatingsolution for Lee Manning’s home.As well as the Genvex micro-heat pump ventilationsystems, Total Home Environment’s ElectroluxZCV845 central vacuum system was installed, notonly for efficient whole house cleaning but toimprove the quality of the air in the home, making ita healthier place to live. Ordinary vacuum cleanersre-circulate dust and harmful allergens, such as dustmites, from their exhaust. The Electrolux centralvacuum system removes all of the dust and allergensto a remote collection point, which only needsemptying once a year. There will be nothing to lugup and down the stairs and the system will be quietenough to hear the telephone. What’s more, it will

last well over twenty years, a realbenefit for the environment and Lee’s pocket. The need to keep fresh air constantly circulatingthrough the house was an important considerationfor Lee and his partner and the heat recovery heatpump ventilation and cooling system was a reallyexciting find. Lee commented, “From inception tocommissioning I have found Total Home Environmenta delight to work with. It is very reassuring whencompleting a self-build to find a company like thiswho have been honest, reliable, and surprisinglyaffordable.” Carpenter Oak Ltd specialise in the construction ofamongst other things, oak framed houses, conservatories and garden structures.

Behind the steep, tourist-beloved streetsaround the cliffs and beaches of St Ives,Cornwall, lies the infrastructure that thetown’s residents use all year round. Herea retrofit SuDS scheme, based on HydroInternational’s stormwater storage andinfiltration technologies and Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls has alleviatedflooding problems at a busy town carpark, caused by the frequent heavyrainfall. The scheme is highlighted as anexemplar of tackling surface water floodrisk in a retrofit context in CIRIA’s newGuidance on Retrofitting to ManageSurface Water.“We needed a surface water attenuationsolution for Trenwith Car Park whichwould be highly effective within the site’sexisting footprint, and would not badlydisrupt the users of the car park duringconstruction,” comments Nigel Higgins, project leader, Highways, for CornwallCouncil. “Since its installation in 2010,we have had no more complaints aboutthe car park flooding, despite poorweather. With the Environment Agency,

we decided that the best answer wouldbe to combine these diversions with aSuDS installation along the bottom ofthe car park slope. The SuDS schemewould provide both undergroundinfiltration and storage attenuation as atwo stage process to protect theproperties and the watercourse furtherdown the slope. “Using Hydro’s Stormcell® andStormbloc® modular load bearinggeocellular blocks enabled a simpleshallow (approx. 1.5 m deep) excavation, which could easily be paved over andlandscaped. It is an excellent example ofa retrofit urban scheme.”The primary protective installationcomprises a drainage channel alongapproximately 100 m across the slope, interconnecting a series of infiltration pitswhere Stormbloc® is installed. Theoutflow of the channel is connected tothe second line of defence, anattenuation storage tank, comprisingnearly 140 cu.m. of Stormcell® with aHydro-Brake® Flow Control device atthe outlet. This secondary protectivetank is designed to provide surface waterstorage when the infiltration channeldesign is exceeded. It controls themaximum discharge into the watercourse. Stormcell® is designed tominimise silting of the storage volume inorder to maximise availability and thewhole installation meets one in 100 yearevent requirements.HYDRO

GRIDFORCE SUPPLY ‘THE SYSTEM’,BOTH PRODUCT AND EXPERTISE

FOR THAT PERFECT FINISH

The Gridforce system is required to achieve aTurfed/gravel finish suitable for vehicular traffic, maintaining a natural appearance and alleviatingproblems sometimes encountered usingalternative inferior brands.

Soil and sub base need to be selected with ouradvice to achieve a quality long lasting finish forboth clients and specifiers.

Gridforce can supply the ideal choice ofpreparation materials, complete with thetechnical knowledge for an excellent end result.Gridforce is unique in its manufacture by usinga blend of LDPE, giving superior flexural strength, overcoming problems associated with HDPEalternatives.

Unsurpassed axle loadings and wall strengthcontribute to a performance difficult to surpass.Gridforces’ patented clipping system givesexcellent integrity without the need for fixingpins, another cost to be considered.

Gridforce prides itself on its professionalapproach to all potential projects whether theybe on a self install or a Gridforce ‘supply & fix’alternative.

Gridforce has a committed team with technicalback up to support Specifiers, Engineers, EstateManagers and all those concerned withengineering great solutions.

This example of a failed alternative system was due to lack of adequate planningand preparation. The client Twycross Zoo was concerned that visitors were exposed to

mud and equally importantly driving and walking on a potentially unsafe surfacewhich was unacceptable. Gridforce provided a survey of the ground conditions and a

suitable installation system was advised, duly installed and in this case projectmanaged to completion.

The car park (below) shows a drainagesystem that could not cope with theheavy downpour that left a real problemregarding a soak away solution.

The Gridforce system prevents build upof surface water and allows the surfacewater to disperse quickly to alleviateflooding problems and is a far moreenvironmentally safe solution.

Gridforce offers the environmentalalternative for flood defence using theunique and revolutionary tile systemmade of 100% recycled plastic toprovide ground reinforcement tomultiple surfaces. The tough grids canbe laid above or below the ground leveland then filled with either stone orearth, or can even be seeded.

Uses for Gridforce range from largeindustrial applications coveringthousands of square metres to smallprojects. Their design means that theyare extremely easy to install andprovide a cost-effective solution towhat would have been more expensiveif it were to be concreted or paved.Offered as either a temporary orpermanent solution, the tiles aredesigned to give a firm surface that willnot sink, rut or shift once installed.

S.U.D.S compliant

GRIDFORCE – its more than plastic! Its a system.

Trussed rafters are top atthe hospice projectTrussed Rafter Association (TRA)member, DWB Boston, has supplied 200large-span trusses for the roof of thefirst phase of the new Butterfly Hospicebuilding in Boston, Lincolnshire.Following a competition to find a namefor the new hospice, the trustees chose“Butterfly”, suggested by a localschoolgirl, as the winner. The name harksback to a Native American folk taleabout how God, saddened when he sawhis creatures start to age and die, created butterflies to bring more joy intothe world.DWB Managing Director, Steve Pinner, explains: “Besides heating and ventilatingequipment, the hospice requires hoiststo help lift and move some of thepatients. These hoists are suspendedfrom the roof structure so our trusseshad to be engineered to withstand thestatic and dynamic loads applied tothem.” TRA

Lumira Aerogel insulates swimmersThe William Penn Leisure Centre atRickmansworth, includes a 25mswimming pool. The solution was tointroduce Lumira aerogel (previouslycalled Nanogel) inside the full heightKalwall at the end of the pool. Lumiraaerogel is the world’s lightest and mostinsulating solid. Within the Kalwall panela ‘U’ value of 0.28W/m²K can beachieved. This is equivalent to a solidwall and is probably the best insulatingperformance of any translucent system.A particular benefit for swimming poolsis that the diffused daylight eliminatesglare and veiling on the water whichmeans that lifeguards can seeunderwater swimmers better. The Kalwall cladding and roofing systemis designed to transmit "museum-quality"light evenly across an interior withoutglare or any harsh contrasts of light andshade while at the same timemaximising thermal insulation.STOAKES

Located in the cultural heart of Helsinki, the building is the new home of TheSibelius Academy – the leading musicuniversity in Finland and the biggest ofits kind in Nordic countries. Designed byMarko Kivistö, this impressive structurehas 26,000m2 of space and the 27mhigh main concert hall seats 1,704people. It also contains five smallerrooms for 140–400 listeners and theseinclude a chamber music hall, a chamberopera hall, an organ hall, a 'black box'room for electrically amplified music anda rehearsal hall.

Before the official opening the Finnishnational broadcasting company, YLE,used it to transmit the election nightbroadcast for the country’sparliamentary elections, and since thenit has hosted a wide variety of concerts.Public safety is therefore a high priorityfor the building owners and no more isthis better demonstrated than in the useof a state-of-the-art life safety systemfrom Hochiki Europe.

The building took just over two years toconstruct and early on in the processHedengren Security was commissionedto specify and configure the building’sfire detection system which was installed

by the contractor Sähkö-Aro Oy. ChristerSivén, the company’s product manager, explains, ‘Hedengren is one of Finland’soldest and most respected companiesand as well as enjoying a close workingrelationship with Hochiki, we alsomanufacture our own range of controlpanels. Our two systems perfectlycomplement each other and we havealready successfully installed them in e.g.the House of Justice in Helsinki.’

The Helsinki Music Centre’s addressablefire detection system is based aroundHochiki’s Enhanced Systems Protocol(ESP). Stuart Davies, Hochiki’s marketingmanager, comments, ‘ESP is a robusttotal communications solution forintelligent fire detection and fullyintegrated systems. It has a multi-purpose structure that provides theflexibility and expansion toaccommodate addressable systemsthrough to integrated buildingmanagement and safety systems.’

The system at the Helsinki Music Centrecomprises five Hedengren control panelsand 2,500 addressable devices fromHochiki, including ALG-E optical smokedetectors, HCPE-E call points, YBN-BSBbase sounder beacons, ACA-E multi-heat

sensors.

Aesthetics were very important withinthe building and Marko Kivistö insistedthat design continuity had to bemaintained. He requested that the multi-heat sensors be supplied in a variety oftones so that they could blend in withthe overall look. Hedengren Securityasked Hochiki to supply the products inivory white, real white, black andaluminium and these were delivered tothe site.

Due to the very high ceiling in thebuilding it was decided that two HochikiFIRElink aspirating fire detection systemsalso would be necessary in order toprovide the requisite level cover above10m. Aspirating detectors are around 10times more sensitive than general pointdetectors and are therefore suitable foruse in establishments such as theHelsinki Music Centre where there is ahigh density of people and an earlywarning is desired. The systems alsooffered an additional aesthetic advantageas the pipe work was hidden in theceiling voids.

Hedengren Security worked closely withthe other members of the construction

team and the installation of the firedetection system took place over thecourse of one and a half years. Thebuilding was completed on schedule andwas turned over to the owners at theend of April 2011. This allowed time forthe musicians to get accustomed to thenew concert hall and for the builders tocomplete the landscaping around thebuilding before the formal opening inAugust.
